Why does my Medion CD/DVD player no longer play CDs?

Medion MD 96420 had been working okay, but currently will not read CD ROMs! It will read DVDs, but only when manually started using ad-on software

Can not read at all, or can not play? E.g Can you access the drive through My Computer?

Have you also tried another CD's?

If it's a media file, have you tried in a different media play such as VLC?

Jack,Fidelis,Frank,ha14, Thank you all, and yes apart from a cleaning disk I am trying all your sugestions. The disks open in another computer, and they had been openning in the laptop until I was doing some burning using Nero, which did not go well. And since then some DVDs wont open, and CDs made on a different computer using XP wont open. There is some issue between XP disks and Vista, but they did all used to work. I can run entertainment DVDs so the mechanical aspect works. I suspect a software problem, but havent solved it yet. I have run through the microsoft fix-it a couple of times. It acknowledges a problem it cannot repair?

Hello, if the fixit link does not work and you are sure that your discs are clean, you could try removing the drivers for your drive.  Once the drivers are remove, restart your system and the drivers will be reinstall at reboot.
