Issues importing eMail from Hotmail to Gmail.

roger February 1, 2010

I followed the instructions to import my hotmail account to gmail.

Now in gmail settings ‘Accounts and Imports’ it names my hotmail and says – Initial import done. New messages will be forwarded as they arrive.

However, after the initial import including all my folders, no other messages have been imported although plenty have arrived at Hotmail.

Any ideas?

Jack, my mistake, the layout has changed since your post, and the 'Check mail using POP3' said something like use to check from other Gmail accounts, but when filled in using my Hotmail account details it worked perfectly.
    Thank you again

You use Check mail using POP3: not import mail and contacts. That is how I use it and it works fine for me. I can't help you with Import mail and contact as I have never used it.

Jack, going to 'accounts and import' I am not given the option to fill in the POP server as shown in your post it just asks for the Hotmail account name and password, does the initial import and no more.

Jessica, according to Hotmail - 'You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address that ends in,,, or is part of Windows Live Custom Domains'

    Thank you both anyway.

"You can import the contacts from your old account, import the existing messages and the messages you will receive in the next 30 days and create a new label for the imported messages."

Since it's only for 30 days, I'd suggest you forward your Hotmail messages to another account by going to Options in Hotmail > (under Manage Your Account) Forward mail to another e-mail account.

It used to be that you could only forward your mail to accounts ending in @msn or some other Microsoft domain, but now you can forward to ANY email account!
