I have win xp and in my system tray, under the internet connection icon, it occasionally switches between “a cable is unplugged” to “you are now connected”(or something to that effect).
Could it be my network adapter?
There could be several culprits:
1. Faulty network adapter
2. Faulty router
3. Faulty cable
I may be forced to ask you the usual question:
Are you sure the network cable is plugged in properly?
Notice any defects in the cable?
Notice the same problem while plugged in elsewhere?
Notice the same problem if another computer uses your cable?
Are you sure the network cable is plugged in properly? YES
Notice any defects in the cable? NO
Notice the same problem while plugged in elsewhere? cannot tell (it's a desktop)
Notice the same problem if another computer uses your cable? (just the desktop)
it tends to happen heavily with torrents
If you notice that this problem only occurs with torrents, try limiting the number of ports available. By default, most apps will not limit the number of connections. Try changing it to 100-200 (total connections) and see if they problem resolves itself.
It could be your router or even a faulty modem.
Does it change when your using the Internet heavily. It may "shut down" when there is too much bandwidth going through the router. Thats what happens to mine.
