Recently when I was trying to import a .pst file into Outlook for Mac 2011, I received an error message that states “Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close”. What should I do to overcome from such circumstances?

To import .pst file in Outlook 2011, you should follow the steps :
1 - Open the application
2 - From Outlook, Click on File ? Import
3 - Import box appears then select Outlook Data File (.pst or .olm) option
4 – Click for next step
5 – Now select the file type to import
6 – Select required file
7 – Now finish the process with click on 'Done'

In the test Identity, you can export under File - Export as .olm file. This can be imported safely into your Identity. see if it works
