How can two people watch a movie together from different locations?

Denis May 22, 2013

How can two users watch the same movie (synchronized) while living in different locations? Both users have the same movie file saved on their laptops and a broadband Internet connection to communicate and interact.

I live in Germany, my brother is in another country and we want to watch movies or sitcoms together, like a movie evening. Any ideas on how we can achieve this?

Thank you very much.

A landline will probably provide the lowest latency, so you could make a quick landline call, hit play at the same time on each machine and then hang up. Then commence a regular Skype/other VoIP conversation. Provided you don't pause the movie it should remain in sync.

The other way you could do it is to both access a site like and decide to press play on an exact hour/minute/second. That way you should both be perfectly in sync.

    Good luck!

Agree with DalSan. Remote from one to the other. Or, you could do it the old fashion way. Get on the phone/VoIP and hit the play button at the same time.

Yes setup a Remote Desktop access and enjoy the same desktop together and watch the movie together like DalSan M has advised. Lot of free remote desktop softwares are available and teamviewer is one of the best. Other options are :

You could set up remote access, such as Team Viewer, so that one can view the other's desktop. This way everything is seen the same way, though due to internet lag, synchronized being would not be exact. There would be a few seconds lag from the remote computer to the computer accessing the remote computer. Other than this, you would have to time synchronize the time at which both files are played.
