Can I find out where advertisers get my email address?

Now and then a spate of email offers with similar themes (body alterations, pharmaceutical drugs, etc). Is there a way to trace back the source of the email addresses these companies are using?

Use gmail and do not click everywhere and do not enter you email  on random sites.
you will hardly see any ad in your inbox.
You can try this with a new gmail address, and it will 100% work.

I agree with ha14 that you can't really find out where advertisers/spammers get your email address.

But in general there are three simple ways how spam or advertisement ends up in your inbox:

    1. You sign up to a site, service or similar which somewhere states in the agreement to give your data out (only) to their partners. The problem here is that there is no real regulation what those partners do with your data.

    2. Your email address ended up on one or more "spam databases" which is used to make money. There are people and organizations which gather email addresses from all over the web, put them in a database and sell them in batches (e.g. 10.000 addresses for $5)

    3. Trial and Error. Some spammers simply gather usernames and real names from all around the web and use them with the most common services e.g. "",  "" etc...

Even if you created a new email address and never used it or given it out it is likely that spam will end up in your inbox sooner or later.
