they have not used facebook for long (it can be for several hours); the others friends on the list have used FB after the other ones

At the bottom right hand side do you see 'Chat'? if you do click on that and your chat list will be restored.
If not, on the left hand side have you got your bookmarks list opened? if so close it and you will see your friends list.
Dont change your browser there is absolutly no need to.

Try a different browser or maybe restart your browser. Or make sure that you are online ;)

Have you try changing other browser like Safari or Chrome?
There may be several reasons like
1. You are not online on chat
2. None of your friend are online
3. Your browser doesn't support facebook chat
BTW now you can with our facebook friends on mobile also..
