How can I get my own domain for email? For example myname@myowndomain.com as opposed to myname@gmail.com.

When you buy a domain name and hosting plan, it also normally comes with email. But as Jack says, it's better to reroute that email service through Google Apps which is a vast improvement on anything your web hosting company is likely to offer you.

Just sign up to Google Apps http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html
It's free for personal use and up to 50 users
Then set it up on your domain (Ie point your domain Google Apps). For help, visit http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/topic.py?topic=20897
Jonathan,
we have had a similar question previously: Can I purchase a domain independent of hosting and use it for eMail?
Does that answer your question?
