What electronic games should I pick for my kids for Christmas?

Michael Suarez November 7, 2011

I have 3 sons (ages: 3, 4, 12) and one daughter (age 10). We are pretty much green so far with respects to entertainment electronic games for our kids and we would like help in deciding the best Christmas present that could be shared initially between our 2 oldest ones. X-box? PS3,4?, iPod?, Wii? Anything else?

The best way to figure out what to get your kids is to look at the games available for each system. The best games for the Nintendo Wii are mostly made by Nintendo themselves, and are part of long-running franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Donkey Kong. These Nintendo titles are mostly kid-friendly, and the Wii is generally considered the "family" console -- though, of course, you can find more violent, adult-oriented fare on the Wii if you look for it.

The PS3 and 360 cater mostly to older gamers, and their best games (in my opinion) come mostly from action franchises like Halo, Call of Duty and Uncharted. With the release of the Kinect and Move (motion controllers for the 360 and PS3 respectively), both Microsoft and Sony have been trying to branch out and include more stuff for kids and families. Microsoft seems to have met with more success, but their family catalog still lags behind Nintendo's. If you do get a 360 or PS3, I'd suggest you check out a game called Child of Eden -- it's a gorgeous abstract music game that's gone criminally underappreciated.

This is a huge simplification, of course: like I said above, you can find adult games for Wii, and kids' games for PS3 and 360 -- this is just the general trend I've observed. You'll really have to think about what your kids would like to play before you can make an informed decision.

I would suggest you to get a Xbox 360 + Kinect. It also has many hacks to control it in many ways.It also features parental control so that you can keep a check on your children.
