I have this problem with After Effects CS4. It crashes!
After looking at different tutorials nothing used to work. So I thought that maybe someone here at MakeUseOf can help me.

It was all a graphics card problem! I downloaded the video driver from my computer developer official site, and now everything works fine!

Hello, you could try deleting/renaming the preferences files in After Effects. To do so, try the following:
-- open After Effects
-- click on following keys ctrl+alt+shift when after effects is starting
-- once you do the above, it should give you the option of deleting preference files
-- restart After Effects
You could also try navigating to After Effects folder and delete/rename the folder Prefs. Keep in mind that it might be a hidden file

did you tried to run in administative mode?
1. Go go Control Panel -> System-> Advance System settings
2. Click Advanced tab, Performance -> Setting
3. Click Data Execution Prevention -> Turn on DEP for all programs
except those I select - > Here you click Browse and choose where your AE CS4
location is, and click Apply -> OKalso perhaps some applications are not compatible with CS4.you can try to update CS4go to C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeUpdater6
