I suggest trying out Geany, a lightweight code editor. If you want to know more about it, you can check out the article I wrote about it: //www.makeuseof.com/tag/geany-great-lightweight-code-editor-linux/

I guess Kate is the editor of choice. Asking about a specific software for Ubuntu, shows me your actual Linux experience level, and I would not dare recommend things like vim a.o.
Just run at the terminal "sudo apt-get install kate" without the quotes or search it the software center way. In time, I hope you will also discover the high level of usability and customization available.

If you want to simply build console apps use Vim+ or GVim
