i downgraded the firmware and diffrent ones. I hooked my cable into to the comuter and brought up itunes. Put the ipod threw dfu mode and pressed shift and restore at the sametime and a message came up as error. I been trying to downgrade to jailbreak my ipod for 2 weeks now and nothing has happend. i have a version od 4.2.1 and i would like to have 3.1.3 or 4.0

If you just want to jailbreak your iPod it's easier to do it using your current Firmware. iOS 4.2.1 can be jailbroken without problems — Greenpois0n, Sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool they all have support for up to iOS 4.3.

Downgrading to iOS 4.0 should be possible using the method you mentioned (DFU, custom select).

If you receive any "Error 16xx" you can try using a different USB Port, restart the computer or one of the fixes listed by Apple

Since there was no 3.2.1 for iPod Touch I assume you want any iOS 3.x version (3.1.2, 3.1.3).

Unfortunately the process has become complex since Apple has banned downgrading any iDevice to a Firmware lower than iOS 4.0.

Here is a possible guide - I haven't tried it myself so I cannot guarantee that it works:

You will also need to download the desired iOS version for your Generation of iPod Touch.
Here are a few links where you might be able to find it: (German, all you have to do is select your device, then the iOS version)
