What DOS boot command should I use?

Henry Scott March 28, 2010

I have a computer that will not successfully boot into Windows XP.

However I can get into the command prompt via safe mode (F8) but am confused as to which DOS command should I use to boot the computer?

1. fixmbr
2. fixboot
3. fixboot/fixmbr
4. bootcfg/rebuild

Thanks for any suggestions

Yes, Henry Scott. The fix depends on what the issue is. Do you have another operating system installed? The fixmbr is when the whole boot system has been damaged. How and when did the problem start?

There is no other operating system installed. The problem has just started recently.
Doesnt appear to be a virus problem as have run bootable Bitdefender CD. No viruses found. Also have used Windows PE disk and checked screen monitor via Windows Device Manager - all reported OK; RAM memory also OK checked with MEMTEST. - Henry

were you able to boot your computer? If so, do you know what the problem was and how did you fix it? Thank you for your feedback!

First, what are the symptoms of booting unsuccess? Any blue screen STOP errors?

      Hi Henno -

Thre are no blue screen (BSOD) errors. Computer boots up normally, but a blacked out screen appears when the Windows XP startup logo should appear.
