We have the option of enabling ReadyBoost in the pen drive. Does this really work or improve the system speed, and does it work as RAM?
This feature uses external USB flash drives as a hard disk cache to improve disk read perfor¬mance. Larger caches can improve performance, but the ReadyBoost cache cannot be greater than 4 GB on a FAT32 file system or greater than 32 GB on an NTFS file system. Windows 7 use the Windows SuperFetch algorithm to determine which files should be stored in the cache. SuperFetch monitors files that users access (including system files, application files, and documents) and pre¬loads those files into the ReadyBoost cache. All files in the cache are encrypted using 128-bit AES if the flash storage device is removable, but hardware manufacturers can choose to disable encryption on internal, non-removable ReadyBoost devices.
And the latest info and most important :Computers with fast hard disks (such as 7,200- or 10,000-RPM disks) might realize minimal performance gains because of the already high disk I/O. ReadyBoost will read files from the cache only when doing so will improve performance. Hard disks outperform flash drives during sequential reads, but flash drives are faster during non-sequential reads (because of the latency caused when the drive head must move to a different disk sector).Therefore, ReadyBoost reads from the cache only for non-sequential reads. You will not feel any improvements if your running..lets say,atleast 4 gb of ram,then its uselles...but fi your running on 1,or 3 gb then it can help a little...its ment for older systems..with low memory performance....

People misunderstand what RAM is; RAM is really just a disk buffer. The more RAM you have, the less disk activity is needed. But no matter how much RAM you have, you always need to access disk some, even if its to pull the initial operating system down.
So RAM is a buffer for disk, it has one great advantage over disk in that it is extremely quick and one big disadvantage in that it is volatile, when the power goes so does the content of RAM.
ReadyBoost introduces a level between RAM and disk, a flash memory level. Flash is not as fast as RAM but far faster then disk, flash is also non-volatile like the disk.
With ReadyBoost if a part of the disk is needed that isn't in RAM, before starting the slow process of dragging it down off disk is begun a quick look is taken at the flash memory. If the part of disk needed is cached in the flash, its plucked from there.
When the machine starts up there is a good chance that it managed to keep all the system files in flash. Thus the initial load time of Windows is greatly reduced.

It's simple as this. flash disks today have better speeds than a standard HDD ( not SSD ). it takes less time to access. but it's more slower than the RAM. so windows came with a solution where you can speed up the performance of windows by saving a cache copy in your flash which allows more read speed than a HDD.

Ready Boost using an 8 or 16GB flash drive will also speed up a system with an HDD with limited free space. Page File goes to flash drive rather than HDD.
ready boost option is help full where your system is running very slowly, It won't use full or boost your speed when you have the sufficient RAM.
Windows Ready Boost is helpful in speeding up old systems with limited RAM. However much help Ready Boost will be depends on the speed of flash drive you use. I suggest using a high speed USB 2.0 drive with at least 30 MB/s read speeds.
Ready Boost is soon becoming redundant though. On computers with SSDs, Ready Boost cannot be enabled because the bottleneck between hard drive and RAM is widened. The best way to speed up any PC is to swap in an SSD. Hope this helped!

Windows ReadyBoost function reduces the access time on some read operations, using a flash memory (USB key, SD card..) As a dedicated cache. Flash memory is kind of faster than hard drive, for certain operations, slower for others. ReadyBoost drive will not help you if you are out-of-memory situations like running games, Virtual Machines...
When you connect a USB drive to your computer and enable ReadyBoost, Windows will store SuperFetch data on your USB drive, freeing up system memory. This can theoretically improve your system’s performance.
ReadyBoost can be useful if your computer/laptop has a small amount of RAM (512 MB-1 GB) and you don’t want to add additional RAM! If you have a very fast USB drive, you may see some increase in performance.

Now we have SSD hard drives better to go with technology and using video card with CUDA tech.

if you look at the benchmark
some application (like photoshop..) do gain small benefit bu this depends and is nowhere like having extra 1GB ram.
if you have 512MB of ram then having USB 4GB ReadyBoost can help in some situations, but nowadays who will use laptop/pc with 512GB RAM. It also depends on motherboard, hard drive speed...
i tested once with 4GB usb key on vista with 2GB ram, nothing special.
What? 512GB Ram???
It's not noticeable if you already have gigs of RAM. It only applies if you're using older hardware.
