Regarding: How can I disable “People you may know” box on Facebook?
It's interesting that when many many people complain about something annoying on Facebook they tend to ignore us instead of fixing the problem. I befriended my young Granddaughters and now I have a never ending list of their kiddie friends to wade through. That's dam sadistic, come on Facebook have a heart.

I am also a fan of "social fixer". You should be able to tweak that and all kinds of other options that you might find annoying :)

I am using chrome with an extension named "Social Fixer".
It allows me to customize almost all the properties of Facebook UI.
You can disable elements, add some extra stuffs, clean up the UI, add themes etc. and lots more..

I have been using it and so far everything is really good.
It does not annoy once you set it up, so that's also a plus factor.

Browser Support: Google Chrome, FF, Safari, Opera. IE is not supported.
Also, Greasemonkey Script is available too.

Click on arrow right side of Home. From drop down menu click on account settings. Cross to left side of page and click on Notifications, scroll down menu and click on "f other updates from facebook", uncheck People you may know on facebook and your done, just remember to save changes.

It's a FB feature that cannot be disabled casually. It's embedded into their design. Though you can look for scripts to hide it.
