Why does my Dell XPS 15 no longer play any sound?

SJ November 27, 2011

The sound of my Dell XPS 15 was working just fine the previous night, but this morning it just doesn’t work. No speakers, no headphones. The only application whose audio is available is Skype. VLC files, start up sound, nothing else is working. Please help!

Some sound cards block speakers when headphones are connected.
If you haven't hooked up any headphones: what does your volume control say?
What does control panel > Sound say? (hint: make sure you show "disabled devices" by right clicking in the inner window on the tab "Playback" and check "Show disabled devices")

it is possible that some antivirus or antimalware removed required file.
it happened with me using malwarebytes.

pause or disable such tools and restore the system using system restore.
choose a point when you were able to listen to sounds.
if it works on skype. also try winamp. windows media player.
in my case it was some movies that lost sound because of an antimalware tool removed a filter k lite.
try n tell me what happened .
