Why can’t I install iTunes on my Windows 7 PC?

Anonymous January 31, 2014

When I try to install iTunes on my Windows 7 PC I get the following error message:

“Service ‘Apple Mobile Device’ failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.”

I am logged in as an administrator. What do I need to do differently?

Happenned to me on 2 pc's.
Had to completely remove all Apple software from both pc's (in the add remove software panel) then re-install iTunes from download.
    Works fine now.

I suggest to follow the linked technical support article and fully remove any iTunes installation and component from your system.

If you encountering problems the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility might be of help.

Once all bits and pieces of iTunes and/or it's components are remove download the latest installer for iTunes and try to install it again.

You could try the fix file permission software found here: http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/reset_file_permissions.html, or fix the registry permission here: http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/reset_registry_permissions.html, or try the Windows Repair(All-in-One) software here: http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html. Let us know if this does not work for you.

I would try Jan's suggestions and go to the iTunes support knowledge base. If you still have issues, try Hovsep's suggestion by locating the iTunes installation file in your Download folder, right-click on the installation file, and then select Run as administrator.
