Is is possible to use an external drive to play Blu-ray discs on a MacBook? It has a Core2Duo processor and 9400m graphics.
Is it physically possible and does it need any software, either paid or free?
you'd better use a bluray drive and it will play .
Yes! The resolution won't be as good though as with the Retina display
Yes you can, you use blueray player software. I would recommend using VLC

yes you can play bluray movies on mac if the mac recognizes the external drive
you can use VLC player to play blu ray movies
thank you , I have installed VLC but t does not seem to support playback ,it recognises the disc but will not play movie,
does it need a codec
try mac blu player
you can download it here
Ok that works but at $60 a bit steep ,is there a freeware equivalent
try vlc player nightly
DVDFab Mac Blu-ray Player -
is good as you have 30 days trial and no watermark issues.
Still $60 for Disc playback
Unfortunately,Mac apps are pricey and simple stuffs are charged so high.
Other thing you can do is to use Handbrake but it takes time.
if the external drive supports Blue Ray discs you are good to go! :)
but the movie does not play, is there a player that supports bluray playback
try Klite Codec Pack or powerDVD. KLite includes the media player classic which plays almost all the types of media! I'm using it since 2008 and never had any trouble with playing anything!
Further research and trial.- the Macbook recognizes the drive and Bluray disc but does not support native playback.
is the an update, software or patch available
if the drive you are using supports blu ray then you might be able to play blu ray
you can play but first tell me you macbook version and please don't buy any first check supported os and then buy
The external drive should work out of the box (at least I haven't encountered one that hasn't so far). For playback you will need third party software as Apple doesn't support BD in any of their products.
If you got the latest version of VLC on your Mac you are already set. For the sake of it you might want to download and add the following files to support encrypted discs.
