I'm glad MakeUseOf attracts hard-working learners of all ages.As for your question, you can have Mario move the way you want it in your favorite desktop PC game and then just use something like Cropper (free) to record his movements to an animated GIF (use this guide). This would probably be much easier than say, making your own Mario animation in Synfig, which will take more time, perhaps too much for a simple animated GIF.
