How can I access a Mac without knowing the admin password?

john January 9, 2011

I got a Mac mini 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, running OS 10.4.10 from a company upgrading all their pre-Intel hardware. Nobody knows the admin password anymore so I can’t upgrade or install any software. Is there any way to change the password, short of reformatting the hard drive and starting all over? I can’t believe I’m the first person with this issue.

There is a way to do it without the Installation CD, but you have to use command line. It is a workaround that lets you access the Out-Of-Box setup, which lets you setup a new admin account. From there you can change any password. I wrote a quick how-to on my blog.

There are various ways to reset the administrator password.
The easiest one being to start from the Mac OS X Install DVD. Then in the top menu select "Utilities > Reset Password"

    Another method is described here
