AMD has announced its new Radeon 6700XT, becoming the third entry in its latest GPU generation. The 6700XT will sit below the already released 6800 and 6800XT GPUs in the company hierarchy and is a mid-tier GPU option poised to strike out at Nvidia's ludicrously popular RTX 3070.

At its reveal, AMD confirmed that the new GPU would hit the market on March 18 with an MSRP of $479.

AMD Reveals Radeon 6700XT GPU

Though billed as a reveal, AMD didn't unveil the 6700XT completely, holding back its complete technical specs until the actual launch date of March 18.

What we do know is that the AMD Radeon 6700XT packs in 12GB GDDR6 RAM, a 192-bit memory bus, is built on AMD's RDNA2 architecture and has a 96MB Infinity Cache.

The revealed specs also show that the 6700XT will come with a much higher base clock speed in comparison to its siblings, with a 2.42GHz base clock speed and a 2.58GHz boost clock speed. However, while its clock speed is higher than the 6800 and 6800XT, the new 6700XT has 40 Compute Units (CUs)—the same as the 5700XT of the previous generation.

For comparison, the Radeon 6800 has 60 CUs, while the Radeon 6800XT has 72CUs.

Still, the core specs on paper are impressive. AMD is positioning the 6700XT as a powerful option for 1440p gaming, placing Nvidia's RTX 3060 and RTX 3070 firmly in its sights. Although AMD didn't elaborate or provide specific specs, it claims to beat out the RTX 3070 in games such as Dirt 5 and Assassins Creed: Valhalla.

6700xt gpu roster manufacturers

Furthermore, the 6700XT will launch will designs from the full range of GPU manufacturers, including Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire, and more. Early indications show that most 6700XT GPUs will use a triple-fan design, although AMD's stock design uses a dual-fan layout.

AMD GPU Stock At Launch

The big question for most people will be, "How will I get my hands on the 6700XT at launch?"

It's a good question, and one that neither of the two major GPU manufactures has managed to solve as yet. Every single GPU released between AMD and Nvidia in the past few months has sold out, fast.

Prices are at an all-time high as scalpers clear the markets of any new stock, while the booming cryptocurrency mining scene is also scooping up the hardware as fast as it appears. Nvidia took the step of announcing a cryptocurrency mining line of GPUs to help claw some hardware back to its traditional user base, gamers.

In that, although AMD's GPUs are traditionally not as useful for mining cryptocurrency, there is little doubt the 6700XT will sell out almost instantaneously. If you can find a pre-order form, it could well be worth filling it in and staking your claim now.
