Amazon is making some big changes to its slate of health and wellness devices.

We’ll tell you everything you need to know about the discontinuation of the Halo lineup of products.

Farewell to Amazon Halo

In an Amazon blog post, the company announced that it will stop supporting the Halo lineup on July 31, 2023. On August 1, 2023, all the devices and companion app will no longer function.

The Amazon Halo brand consisted of two fitness trackers: the simple Amazon Halo and the Amazon Halo View with a touchscreen. In late 2022, Amazon also added the Halo Rise, a contactless sleep tracker and alarm clock.

A number of Amazon employees in the division will be laid off. In an email sent to employees and obtained by The Verge, Melissa Cha, Amazon's VP of smart home and health, said:

“We have made the difficult decision to wind down the Halo program, which will result in role reductions. More recently, Halo has faced significant headwinds, including an increasingly crowded segment and an uncertain economic environment. Although our customers love many aspects of Halo, we must prioritize resources and maximize benefits to customers and the long-term health of the business.”

Some Customers Due a Refund

If you’re a current user of the devices, you can download or delete health data from the Settings page on the app. You can also save your body scan images to a phone’s camera roll.

There is a bit of good news for anyone who purchased one of the devices in the past 12 months. In the coming weeks, Amazon will fully refund the purchase price of the devices and accessory bands. Any unused prepaid Halo subscription feeds will be refunded to the original payment method. Paid subscribers will no longer be charged a monthly fee. There’s no need to take any additional steps.

Amazon noted that you can recycle the devices through its recycling program.

Amazon’s Halo Lineup Failed to Survive In a Crowded Market

While the Halo line offered an inexpensive and feature-filled way to improve health and fitness, the market is already crowded with options from a huge number of big names like Apple and Google’s Fitbit.

Amazon seemingly couldn’t make enough inroads against those competitors to make Halo devices a long-term investment.
