The Tesla Model S Plaid is basically a superlative on wheels. The car puts down the craziest performance numbers, and the technology behind the vehicle's insane performance is just as amazing.

When the Model S first debuted, the vehicle was revolutionary in its own right, but the Model S Plaid is possibly the greatest swan song in automotive history. This article will explore five of the most amazing features you'll find in the Tesla Model S Plaid.

1. 1,020 Horsepower

You absolutely read that right: the Model S Plaid is a family sedan with more power than almost any supercar. This insane power is what helps the Plaid put down the most ridiculous numbers we've ever seen from an EV. We're not just talking about performance sedans like the BMW M5. No, the Plaid is quicker than any production car.

The Tesla is the absolute performance EV king. This means that although the Tesla Model S Plaid isn't necessarily cheap, it is a bargain in terms of the performance you're getting for the price. In terms of performance, you'd probably have to get a Bugatti or a Koenigsegg to get close to the numbers the Plaid is capable of. However, considering the Model S Plaid costs around $127,000, it's kind of a bargain compared to the multi-million dollar price tags of its closest competitors in terms of outright performance.

Take a look at some acceleration figures: 0-60 in 1.99 seconds (with rollout), an insane quarter mile time of 9.23 seconds at a blistering 155 mph, and a top speed of 200 mph. If this isn't the craziest performance car ever, we don't know what is. The greatest thing about the Plaid is that it still manages to get 396 miles of range while slaughtering anything it encounters on the road.

2. Tri-Motor AWD

The Model S Plaid features an advanced drive unit, unlike any other EV. The Plaid is equipped with three electric motors. Two of these motors are at the vehicle's rear, where they can actively distribute the torque between the two rear wheels. This system allows the Model S Plaid to accelerate like there's no tomorrow, with crazy amounts of grip. The front axle features an electric motor.

The transmission is a single-speed unit, which is crazy to think about, especially considering the vehicle produces over 1,000 horsepower. The electric motors are incredibly advanced, featuring carbon sleeved rotors. According to Elon Musk, these carbon-sleeved rotors require a special machine to manufacture, and Tesla had to go and build it themselves.

The amount of engineering behind every component of the Model S Plaid is astonishing. When you really dive into the technical aspect of the Plaid, it's easy to see the insane amount of research that went into making this car so ridiculously quick.

3. Drag Coefficient of .208

Electric vehicle sales are soaring, but the Model S Plaid is still the king of aero. Tesla bills the Model S Plaid as having the best drag coefficient of any vehicle, period. The thing about this number is that the Lucid Air also features an eerily similar drag coefficient of .21; so, did Lucid round up their figure? It would be interesting to see if Lucid rounded up their figure from a number that might have been lower than the Plaids.

It's difficult to see this being the case, though, because bragging rights are ultra-important in the EV world, and Lucid wouldn't miss such a great chance to rub it in Tesla's face that their vehicle has better range, along with better aerodynamics. Regardless of the Lucid Air's drag coefficient, the Tesla is one slippery vehicle.

The best thing about the Plaid's aerodynamic body is that you'd never know exactly how slippery it is by simply looking at it. The sheet metal is very conservative, and you'd have a difficult time telling it apart from a first-generation Model S. A stealthy exterior is a major part of the Model S Plaid's allure.

4. Redefined Steering Wheel

So, the verdict is still out on how great this feature is. But, Tesla is sticking by the design of the Model S Plaid's yoke steering wheel. This is definitely something out of a futuristic movie, but many people think it's ridiculous.

In all honesty, if the yoke steering wheel provides superior driving dynamics, and is a better interface to experience the performance of the Model S, then it's definitely worth it.

But, many initial reviews of the yoke steering wheel aren't overly positive and seem to think that Tesla is trying to reinvent the wheel (no pun intended) for no good reason. Not only are some reviewers not impressed, others actually think the wheel is a safety hazard. For example, a scathing review of the yoke published by Consumer Reports details how Alex Knizek (an automotive engineer at Consumer Reports) sees the steering wheel's shape as potentially dangerous, even having problems getting the car out of his driveway.

Backing out of my driveway, my hands slipped off the wheel multiple times, which was startling.

5. Amazing Center Screen

The Tesla Model S Plaid isn't all about mind-bending acceleration. It also has what might potentially be the best central touchscreen of any vehicle. The 17" unit on the Model S Plaid is beautiful, with colors that pop and look very crisp. This is to be expected with its resolution of 2200x1300.

Apparently, Tesla says you can play games on the central screen and goes as far as to claim that the processing power rivals traditional gaming consoles. So if you ever feel like gaming in your driveway or garage, the Model S has you covered. Oh, and the screen tilts as well. Totally not a gimmick.

The Tesla Model S Plaid Is the EV King

Many challengers have tried to topple the Model S, but the Plaid is firmly planted as the best overall electric sedan, especially considering performance. It'll be interesting to see how long Tesla can keep the crown as the EV competition heats up.
