Our community has too many technologically challenged people. We keep trying to seduce them away from using "reply to all" emails, but we haven't yet found anything simple enough. It needs to send an email whenever a new thread is stared, then allow them very easily to opt in or out of further discussion on that topic. And keep their own email address up to date. That's all.

How about putting that control into the hands of the sender instead of the recipient? Give the sender the option to create an email message to which the recipients cannot reply to all, or even forward.http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/researchdesktop/noreplyall.aspx

Why not use "BCC" instead of "To" or "CC" at the original mail, so that "Reply to all" will do no harm (it will act as "Reply").

I suppose the suggestion about would be the easiest solution here.

Not sure if FUDforum can help you It can import E-mail messages via POP3 or IMAP mailboxes (like gMail), or via mailing list catchers like procmail and postfix.MyProBB 2.3http://www.cubiclesoft.com/MyProBB/The POP3 plugin modifies notification e-mails and makes it possible to reply to topics and posts using an e-mail client. It checks the POP3 server and account for new e-mails, rips them apart looking for the reply, and posts it to the forum

Linda, you posted this question in the websites / services category. Could you please explain where or how these discussions take place? Do you have a forum or are you talking about regular eMails sent to a list of recipients.

I wondered a bit about where to put it. We've tried a few options - google groups and Wave, and I was inspired to ask here because yesterday I was looking at Chattertree and wondering if there was a social networking option. So far, whatever we've tried, people go back to sending an email to their own list, which may or may not include everyone or have up to date email addresses, and people respond with either reply or reply to all. It doesn't work for all the obvious reasons, but it's simple!

If you get your group into a "Room" on Chattertree there is a very simple format to either have an ongoing chat with just those members. It has private groups similar to Google Wave, however the user interface is much more friendly for the technologically challenged. There definitely appears to be a networking option, they just don't spam all of your info across an open network. Chattertree has been working great for my book group since we started using it a couple months ago.
