I have tried several 'filter' commands from the Adblock Plus' documentation, but have had no luck so far.

You don't have to write the filters yourself -- using the "Disable on [website]" option creates an exception filter and applies it.But if you're curious and really want to write your own filters (you don't have to!), this filter should whitelist MakeUseOf.com:@@|http://makeuseof.comAlso, thanks a lot for whitelisting us!
