When I try to open a directory on my external hard drive I receive prompt to format the disk. I have had this problem before and found appropriate answer after Googling but unfortunately have forgotten steps to take. I don't want to format it as I don't want to lose my 1TB of data.
Previous advice involved rebooting comp but I can't remember what other steps were. Can anyone help, please?

Try live booting with a Linux OS (Ubuntu,Linux mint) and explore all the files so as to be able to backup them.

Perhaps you lost partitioning info you can restore it with Testdiskhttp://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDiskyou can use windows sysem retore point to revert back to the date where no problems with hard drive.try to uninstall the driver from device manager while external hard drive is plugged then reboot and let windows to reinstall a new one. (If the hard drive is really damaged perhaps will not be recognized again??)

Apparently FS is corrupted. If You have Windows, try Eassos Recovery or PartitionGuruhttp://www.eassos.com/eassos-recovery-free.php

I have no idea what to do, but try to use recovery tools like recuva (it's free) or if it is not working try to use paid tools, last try to use other professional help. I think it needs serious people to save 1TB data, it is many,, so i think you should get the pro to safe it..
