For anyone with an EV, range anxiety can be very real.

Even though improved technology has led to longer-lasting batteries and more and more public charging stations are becoming available, many EV drivers are always keeping an eye on the remaining range. Just like anyone with a traditional, gas-powered car, you don’t want to be stuck with a vehicle that can’t go anywhere.

But we’re here to help. Here are some great ways to improve your electric vehicle range.

1. Slow Down

Even though electric vehicles are much different than traditional counterparts, some of the same wisdom applies when driving. So just like gas mileage, if you want to improve your range, slow down while driving your EV.

The faster you drive, the more energy you’ll use from the battery. And while it’s tempting to zip past everyone on the freeway, that also uses more energy than a steady press on the accelerator.

So let up on the lead foot and travel the speed limit. You’ll definitely notice an improved range.

2. Use Regenerative Braking

One of the best features of an electric vehicle is regenerative braking. A traditional system uses pads that press against a disc attached to wheels. That uses heat and energy that can’t be reused.

A regenerative option turns the wheels in the opposite direction. That does two things. Along with slowing the car down, it produces a small amount of energy to return to the battery. And additional energy to the battery means more range.

While the energy returned to the battery is small, it can definitely add up during a long trip. Most EVs also offer a one-pedal driving system that can completely bring a car to a stop with regenerative breaking and no use of friction brakes.

Another big advantage of a regenerative braking system is in the pocketbook. Many disc brakes in EVs can last up to five times longer when used alone with the regenerative option.

3. Take Good Care of Your Tires

Most electric vehicle owners know that their cars require less maintenance than traditional counterparts. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about any part of your car.

One of the most important parts of any car is your tires. To get the most range possible, always make sure that your tire pressure is as close to the manufacturer's specification as possible. Any time your tires are underinflated, your EV range will be negatively affected. So always make sure to check your onboard tire pressure monitoring system, especially with big swings in temperature.

Along with checking tire pressure, make sure to rotate your tires often. Because electric vehicles are heavier than their traditional counterparts, tires can wear more.

And when it comes time to replace your tires, always make sure to replace them with models designed specifically for electric vehicles because of the additional wear and tear from additional weight and instant torque.

4. Precondition Your Car

Another great way to maximize your EV range is to precondition your vehicle. You can use your car’s companion smartphone app or internal system to schedule the time of departure each day.

So when you jump in your EV in the morning, especially on a very cold or very warm day, the car will be exactly how you want it.

That will help you limit the use of your AC or heat while on the journey that uses precious battery power.

5. Condition Your Battery

Your EV’s battery is a very important part of the vehicle. And to keep the battery healthy for the longest possible time, there are a number of ways you can better condition the battery.

Always make sure to charge the battery to just 80 percent of its maximum capacity if you’re just planning a short trip during the day. You can customize that through the car’s app or onboard system.

You can obviously charge the battery to 100 percent, especially when on a long trip when the maximum range is needed. But keeping the battery charged to just 80 percent maximum during regular use will pay off and keep your battery healthy for longer.

6. Be a Smooth Driver

Instant torque from an electric vehicle can be a rush, especially when cruising down the freeway or hitting the gas when the light turns green. But that does come at a cost—reduced range. So be a smooth driver when accelerating, it will save precious battery energy.

7. Watch Your Energy Use While Driving

Along with actually driving your car, you can lose precious battery life by overuse of the air conditioner or heater. Using too much of those climate control systems can cause a loss of range.

To help cut down on energy use from those systems, make sure to precondition your car as we’ve previously mentioned. And in colder climates, making use of integrated heated seats or a heating steering wheel (if equipped) can keep you warm and comfortable while using less of the heater on the road.

8. Choose an Efficient Route

Taking an energy-efficient route can also help make the most of your EV’s range. Instead of a route that is full of stop-and-go traffic, it’s best to find a way to your location that provides driving at a steady speed. Going up steep hills or mountains can also use more energy than a flatter route.

So before you go, make sure to take a better look at your route and plan the most efficient route. There are a number of great maps apps to help. Many built-in navigation systems in EVs allow you to select the most energy-efficient route. Popular Google Maps even allows you to choose an eco-friendly route.
