The sad thing is that I’ve seen this so many times. It’s even worse when the correct download link is a tiny text link.
No thank you I don’t even want to download crappy QuickTime.
Yeah..It’s so annoying.Since I was a greenhorn to internet,there were uncountable times I clicked wrong links…
Install adblock!
Cost me hours of trying to get the darn thing (not this one but another) out of my system. I’m now VERY cautious abut what I download and even then they can stick things in without asking. UGH!
https://code.google.com/p/adblockforchrome/ – download the AdBlock program for whichever browser you have and it’ll take away all the fake download links so you only have the real one that’s left.
Just use reputable download locations that aren’t ad farms.
@Robert. I have tried ‘reputable’ download sites. They are just as bad. Try looking for any of th efree downloads from CNet fro example. You have to be very careful which button you click. Yes I can hear the critics now shouting that we should use the pay software which is better. However if there are free versions out there why should we not use them? Another pet hate of mine is having to click a little box, often with faint grey text against it, to avoid downloading a mirriad of useless ‘toolbars’. Make the box a positive click on to download these things. Don’t trick me into downloading something I don’t want.
Ironically, I’ve seen these same types of ads on makeuseof. That green download ad used to appear pretty regularly especially on posts that were covering some software to download.
Oh yeah it is irritating for sure for the not so computer savy people…..Very sad they do this
You know, I realize these sites have to make money to exist, but there are times when they just make me want to smack someone!
That’s why i use adblock plus.
Been there–done that. And I DIDN’T get the T-shirt; only sore mouse fingers from clicking the wrong link buttons…
CNET downloads are just SAD. Used to download files from the site years ago. When I tried downloading from the site again, I did a double-take when I saw a bundled program/downloader. =.= Now as much as possible, I download from the program’s official site itself– and hope they host the file.
