Are you talking about a computer with PC Windows OS (probabily Win 7) or Mac? As far as I remember PC supports only 4GB RAM except its some sort of server. Never needed such powerful machine so far. It’s better for PC as it’s underage and never gone to explore things on its own. However great to have a poster like that. I wish your computer will find new home soon.

It’s all about the software architecture. Most consumer operating systems until now have been 32 bit, which has a physical limit of about 4GB. There was a messy hack for Server Enterprise edition 32 bit which allowed for more RAM to be used, but nowadays high-end machines use 64 bit operating systems, which can theoretically support more RAM than you can shake a stick at.
