I read the whole thread once, it was hilarious, but you left all the funny answers out!!

of course the weight increases! but it depends on the kind of data you are storing. Pics are about 21% lighter than videos. But compressed videos (Mpeg2) have the same wight than uncompressed pics. Most heavy are word and exel files, but normally they are not so much on the hard disk so it dos not matter…Also i recognized that illegal mp3 or movie files are about twice as heavy then legal ones- so think also twice to use them…it can be a heavy burden – sorry for my english, i am no native speaker but a hard disk specialist ;-)

Porn weighs the most. Especially right after you watch it. (Be sure to wash your hands)

Actually the weight of an electron is 9.109 3826(16) × 10–31 kg. So I think this guy simply found his EXACT carring capacity (on Earth).

Answer 1:
It depends on the data itself, which is made of 1s and 0s. 1s are heavier than 0s, However your HDD when dully “empty” is full of 1s (not 0s) so it is as its heaviest ! the more your data has 0s the lighter your HDD will become… i recommend darkening your images and videos since they will contain more 0s than 1s and. You can also buy software to write 0s on all your HDD that would make your HDD weigh close to, well zero oz.

Answer 2:

i think the question is …. how much does a brain weigh ? obviously in some cases lighter than air. So dont worry my friend the increase in data weight will be fully compensated for by the lightness of your brain…

ignorance is bliss

Love the answers that say no mass.

On a .7nm production process each 1 bit will hold about 400 electrons. Electrons have mass. Assuming 0 bits have no electrons we can calculate the weight of 1GB of 1’s (with the help of Google) thus:

Electron mass * 400 * 8 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 = 0.00000000000000312995978 grammes (per GB).

A Yottabyte of 1’s on this production process will weigh 3.5 grammes.

In 2010 all data in existence is expected to sum up to just under one Zettabyte (3 milligrammes).

(Magnitudes: kilo, mega, giga, tera, peta, exa, zetta, yotta)

Phillip,

Bits aren’t encoded on a hard disc as electrons, but as magnetic domains. It’s the direction which the magnetic fields point which provides the low level encoding (or, more correctly, the change in direction). There are no more electrons in a 1 than there are in a 0, as stored on disc.

Dear,
I believe there are some viruses, causing the increase in weight of the HDD, please try some good anti virus solution. Hope it would help.

Hi, I think this guy is rite, I have noticed my digital camera getting heavier as I capture images into it. Can somebody advise?????

Just to “enrich” the experience, I would like to add a few replies I found in the thread:

1. “I am glad you brought this up actually. I don’t think this is just a technology problem. The other day, I was reading one of those MS press books (One of the Thick ones) and towards the end of the book (after reading it for about three hours) I wanted to get up for a glass of water and use the toilet eventually. But, here’s when a strange thing happened. As i was about to get up (I usually read in bed) my head was so heavy that I couldn’t get up. I roughly estimate the wheight increase ~564.32 grams. Well, I attributed this phenomena to the amount of information that got stored in my brain during that time (Notice the similarity there?) I eventually fell asleep and when I woke up a few hours later to take the MS exam guess what?!? My head was light again, and I consequently failed the Exam as I couldn’t remember anything a read on that book. Based on my experience, what I would suggest, is turn the laptop off, leave it like that for a few hours and then you can carry it around without risking to break your back. You might risk to loose your data but hey, your health is more important. I hope that helps”

2. “It depends on the size of the gigabyte, if it’s a bigger gigabyte it will weigh more (like a normal bite of your Mcdonalds) …the bigger the byte the more energy (jiggawatts) it will consume and therefore weigh more.”

3. ” Every Gigabyte counts as 5oz of extra weight for your computer. There has been cases (in computers with 1Tb of Hard drive and more) of people left eMule activated 3 days and when that people returned to the computer, there was a hole in the floor instead.”

Maybe it’s a psychological thing. :P the mind logically processes ‘okay there’s more in here, so it should weigh more’. Or the laptop is used so much that the muscles atrophe and it just seems heavier from a lack of muscle.

Hi.. I was having the same problem and I compressed my files to decrease their size and hence weight.

You can also decrease the weight by deleting temporary files in your computer.

There is no direct relation between weight and data size. I have found the cookies highest in weight. So, remember to delete cookies regularly.

Hope this helps.

This is so funny the first time you read it, but read it for the second time, and it will become clear it fake.

a guy with a bad back, who owns an xbox and wants to know the weight of data, and compares it to 6oz(the weight of a standard alcoholic drink)…yeah right

I find this answer the best one>

” Every Gigabyte counts as 5oz of extra weight for your computer. There has been cases (in computers with 1Tb of Hard drive and more) of people left eMule activated 3 days and when that people returned to the computer, there was a hole in the floor instead.”
