Oh dear goodness. As a religion/philosophy major, and an active buddhist(whatever that means) i say chill out. When we human beings "shuffle off this mortal coil" the only thing we have is our life. Yes i know in christianity this life pales in comparison to what comes after, but to get to the next one you still must MAKE THIS ONE COUNT! Isn't that what we're all trying to do anyway(with the exception of scientologists who, i gotta say, are a bit loopy)? Atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu; all of them just want to make their lives better and worth something. The buddha said "he who seeks happiness by hurting those who seek happiness, will never find happiness".

So don't bug anyone about having a religion/faith that you don't have: simply put, you're aiming for the same target using different tools.

Don't bug anyone with your religion: Not everyone finds comfort or motivation in the same principals. Only share your faith if it is asked for, or done in a loving way

JUST BE A GOOD PERSON: No matter what you are. And don't try to stop others from reaching their full potential of goodness. There's plenty to go around!
  • huh?
I respect what you are saying, and I don't include Buddhism in my very harsh feelings towards organized religion. Buddhists don't start crusades or jihads. They don't wipe out other cultures by force to impose their own generic twaddle to maintain economic dominance. They live and let live. But the pure evil done by mankind justified in the name of one god or another over the centuries is pretty hard to just ignore and makes any churches motives suspect in my opinion.

Religion. has been around for ALONG time. it does require a blind faith. there are things in religion that... well, just dont seem right. some religions are so strict "if you sin, you burn in hell for all eternity" so if you cheat on your spouse your burning in hell for all erternity, thats really unfair... (was an example). and yes, there are some people who are so obsessed about the bible, they see it that way, and teach it that way.

religion was created back in a time where science was but a dream. were weird shit happened that couldnt be explained. in a way to find the explenation people came up with spirits. wich ultimately led gods and such. by this logic god/s are all just made up fictional characters to explain things that were going on thousands of years ago, we have scientific explanations now. over the years those fictional characters grew, untill you had a full religion based around it. if thats the case, all religions in the worls are wrong, not true, fake. AKA false hope.

what if there is a... not a god, but a divine being that created everything. this being has no true form. it can take the shape of any body/thing it wanted to. even be multiple gods if it wants. this path would suggest that all gods that are worshiped are different forms of 1 being. that would mean all religions are right, and are true.

Science (wich is not Scientology) is not a religion, but in a way it is blind faith, to some. the scientists that did the research knows that their findings are true, but who ever he/she tells their findings to has to take it on blind faith that they are right. science is out to prove what exists, and show facts for what they can hold, touch, see. wich is why scientists reject the idea of a god. they cant find any data that can be backed up by more then once source (multiple copies of the bible or other types of holy books from different religions dont count). where as to them, they have data that supports a big bang theory. wich if its right, then it means all religions are wrong, not true, fake.

many people believe different things, and many people believe in the same thing but different ways.

i personally believe, if there is a divine being, he didnt create us to just worship him. if there is a meaning to life, i think it would be "live it the way you want. be happy and joyfull." live your life as it comes. enjoy the moments you have with those you care about. you dont know what is going to happen after you die. so enjoy the time you have now.

oh, and the hole "you shall worship no other god but me". that sounds a bit self centered (attention whore/slut). why would god, a being that i was taught was perfect, never sin, love everyone and everything say something such as that? then "we are created in his image". to me, that doesnt just mean appearance, but behavior and such. if this is the case. we create things and destroy them with out a second thought. if god does exist he does the same thing. tidal wave here, tornado there, earthquake over in that area. no lesson being tought... just what.. maybe boredom? and what about the love we show. if love is in his image to, then he is obviously bi. why not, the bible openly states he loves every living creature. not saying he has a romp in the hey with every thing. but if love is in his image, then there isnt anything wrong with being straight, bi, or gay. and if the bible does say something about hating gays (wich i know it doesnt). then the bible is a hypocrite. saying so much about love one another, then say "love anyone but gays". love they neighbor doesnt just apply to the person living next door. but everyone you know, dont know, meet, have met... etc.

we are all human, with our own beliefs. good, bad, wrong or right. it is for us to decide how we live our life, and what we believe in.

Santa is real, I promise. This one guy who lives next to my local donutshop met this Mexican guy once who told about his cousin who had an auntie whose daughter saw a TV show where a girl from Texas got a letter from a guy in Sweden where it said that his mother's third husband once met this drunk whose friend had a mistress that once saw a guy in red clothes on her brother's roof. That was during the summer, tho, but she swore it was Santa. I can't prove it, but it's true.

You can't have Atheists and Theists arguing over religion. The fued would never end! (which is why there have been so many posts so far). What you all need is an impartial mediator. Thats me :)

So...for the point of argument...lets just say 1 out of every 10 people in the world don't believe in God (hypothetically speaking). 9 out of every 10 people will be attending church as they grow, will be praying before they go to sleep, and will be learning and accepting their religion as they grow. This religion (I'll make it easy and go with Christianity) teaches its followers good morals and what not to do (such as kill, steal, covet). This religion will cause no harm to its followers for believing nor any harm to anyone for not believing. It has done nothing but make life simple and easy to understand. Most religions are similiar in some way shape or form and have a similiar purpose behind them.

But...what we all can't forget is ourselves. Human beings. A very intelligent, loving, deceiving, and violent race.
Every religion there is, was made up by a human. That human
poured all the seemingly vital ingredients into their religion for the better of humanity...right? But what if that wasn't true? You can't be blind to the fact that every religion ever made was made for pure entertainment, pure profit, or pure greed. We are a shameless race and we can NOT be trusted.

The point im trying to make, ladies and gentlemen...is that on one hand, a religion can incite prayer, love and hope for all. And on the other, it can incite hate, chaos and death. Muslims hijack planes and crash them into buildings for Allah(God). They do this because they have been brain washed into doing the dirty work of a much smarter, much more vile human being. You religious people go to church, or temple or whatever because you have been brainwashed as well. We should all live on this planet together in harmony but with so many different religions, we will never agree. Religion will constantly be tearing us apart and forcing us to fight. And innocent people will continue to be killed over it. It doesn't matter what religion you believe in because they were all made by MAN. Religion will do NOTHING but help bring down mankind. And i encourage anyone who thinks differently than me, to go sit on the fun end of a broomstick before trying to convince me that im wrong.

absolotely right, unless is your own...

Haha that's awesome. Maybe in another couple hundred years people will stop putting all their faith in an bronze-age sky-daddy and wake up to the potential of human beings.

I'm sure this guy just did that for the lulz, and the lulz he created.

i believe that there is something higher, but i believe that giving it consciousness and human characteristics is ridiculous. i do not believe in god. i believe that religious people are foolish to believe in all that stuff. although i believe that the moral guidelines laid down by religious texts and officials are, on the whole, good (a bad example is the pope. condemning condoms? well done, you just spawn killed millions of babies and adults with aids), however, i also believe that atheists, agnostics and pastafarians do have morals too you know. i believe i've said 'believe' too much (but even consciousness is a belief in existance) and that no-one gives a fuck what is written on the internet or some random picture
  • Charon
I completely agree, every good religious, and every good atheist still believes in the same principles for common benefit. And also no one doesn't believe in anything beyond perceptual, do you feel the earth being spherical? Maybe yes, maybe from a tall mountain you could see the rounded horizon, but for ages it was believed it was flat, it made perfect sense for everyone, and probably a lot of people were hard to convince of the opposite.
What I mean is that the only difference between a religious and an atheist is that one still believes god looks somehow like us and the other maybe not until his last minutes of life will understand that he had believed in something already for all his life being that he was always pushed to discover something new no matter it was going to end.
My faith is that I was born to die and that's enough to value my life and the one of every living being, just like every religion teaches... though my reason I think is more scientific than paradise and hell.

    grown ups with imaginary friends.

And I would have to agree that organized religion is corrupt and full of hypocrisy, but if you actually read and reflected on the Bible you would see that Christians are supposed to help people without any prospect of personal gain, not judge people about personal choices, and just be plain happy that they know God.
I am sorely disappointed with organized Christianity these days, but don't judge the religion and text of that religion by the the vast majority out there, pick up the book and read it with an open mind. I'm not saying that it will convert you, just that it is not to blame for people's actions.
  • Nick
Yes, and at the same time if you read any work of the Shinto, Buddhist, Muslim or Norse religions, you'd learn pretty much the same thing. So basically, you're saying that if you read one book, it makes sense, but if you read any other book, that book is completely wrong?

If you aren't, you aren't a Christian. If you are, you're an idiot.
  • Nick
One of the great things about "Christians" is that you preach and preach about the "Good Book", and basically say that it must be read with an open mind.

When was the last time you picked up the Qu'ran and read it with an open mind? When was the last time you read an atheist doctrine with an open mind?

You can read any piece of mythology - Christianity included, because it IS a mythology - with an open mind and get the same message you're trying to preach. The difference is, you say people are ignorant for not reading your book with an open mind, yet you would never in your life read their book with an open mind.
  • ShamCross
I actually have read other holy texts. And when did I EVER state that the others were wrong? I only said what the message was, not that it is, necessarily, absolute truth.
  • John
    That's not how praying works!

You can't pray for a new Porsche 996 and expect to get one.

You would have to steal the 996 first and then pray for forgiveness of your sins.
  • huh?
or, like priests, abuse a child then pray forgiveness.
