Windows Phone has one or two frustrating omissions. One of these is an easy toggle button to enable and display wireless networking, mobile Internet, Bluetooth pretty much anything concerning communication. Rather than a simple on/off button on the Start screen, users must open the settings menu and flick the on/off switch. Surely there is an app-based solution to this?

Photos are fun – the rise of successful snap-and-filter apps and services such as Instagram and its "fake Polaroid junkies" are proof of this – but sometimes it’s possible that we don’t fully realise the potential of the images we snap, particularly on digital cameras and smartphones. I stumbled across Morfo back in 2010, shortly after the release of Windows Phone 7.

Available free from the Windows Phone apps + games service, the eBay app doesn’t only let you purchase, however. With eBay installed on your device, you can browse, buy and sell, making great use of your handset’s camera and keyboard!

Aware that I should probably listen to the occasional contemporary sound, I became a convert to the BBC's 6 Music channel, which plays an astounding mix of great tunes from the 1950's to the 2010's. Now able to get my fix of good music, it suddenly occurred to be one day when I was heading out that I would be unable to listen to this digital-only radio station in the street – without a suitable mobile app with which to do so.

Windows Phone has a great relationship with social networks, integrating Windows Live, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook into its People hub. This integration means that the user can quickly check statuses, reply to posts and messages, share photos and generally save time by keeping their online social experience centralized. It doesn’t always work this way, however. While these services are integrated into the OS, some of their functions are limited.

As a long term user of Windows Phone 7, the decision to upgrade to Windows Phone 8 was made all the more difficult by Microsoft’s revelation that they wouldn’t be completely abandoning the older release. Instead, the older devices would be receiving an upgrade to what is called Windows Phone 7.8, an update that begins rolling out in December 2012.

Due to a severe spam issue (and to take the storage load away from my PC) I decided to migrate my email accounts to Google Mail. This has had an interesting effect on my ability to collect messages on my Windows Phone. While it isn’t a problem to set up a Gmail account if your email address ends in @gmail.com, the situation is a little different for Windows Phone users if they’re trying to access an email service that uses Google Mail but has its own domain name.

There’s nothing like free streaming music to get everyone rocking. Now, users of Nokia Lumia can sing songs of cheer as Nokia Music arrives on U.S. shores. The Nokia Music streaming service debuted in Europe first before coming to the U.S. and it works straight out of the box. You just need a data plan on your Lumia smartphone to download the songs and enjoy.

Gaming for Windows Phone is an interesting experience. While there are a whole host of great independent titles that don’t have Xbox Live integration, those that do are the ones that tend to be the most popular – for obvious reasons. One game that remains fascinating despite the lack of Xbox Live integration, however, is Armed!, a sci-fi themed RTS with three modes of play and an armada of futuristic weaponry.

Syncing this Windows Phone requires – as with any – the Zune software on your PC and a USB cable (Mac users can use the Windows Phone 7 Connnector for Mac). However for some of us this won’t work out of the box. The impact of this is that syncing your phone to your PC is prevented, which means that photos and videos can’t be saved to your computer and music can’t be copied to your phone. Fortunately there is a way around this, one that is easy to implement.

Popular file sharing and collaboration app Box has just landed on Windows Phone. The new Metro-style app brings all the regular Box features you already know to Windows Phone devices, as well as some specialized ones. Windows Phone’s market share being quite compared to iOS or Android, Box is the first major player to launch a native Windows Phone app since Microsoft’s SkyDrive.
