Across all forms of fictional media, there are certain similarities and archetypes that pop up time and time again. The damsel in distress. The flawed anti-hero. The wise old mentor. The pervasive evil mob of doom. And in my study of fiction, I’ve come across a wonderful site that documents all of the instances of these storytelling tropes.

Have you ever jumped on the wiki of your favorite show or book series, and then fell into a content-saturated time warp? You know what I’m talking about – something like that classic TVTropes black-hole. What I like about wikis is that they may fill in gaps that viewers or readers may have missed along the way – names that have been forgotten, back stories, and even critical plot elements.

Are you a fan of the unknown? Do you tend to investigate strange encounters that have unexplainable results? In that case, the SCP Foundation may be perfect for you. It’s a site the crosses Kolchak: The Night Stalker with the Men In Black. A place where reality and the ethereal meet. Right along the lines of Creepypasta, the SCP Foundation is a wiki featuring articles about strange, unusual, and seemingly supernatural entities.

At first, the releases coming out of Wikileaks were shocking and exciting. They brought us news of civilian casualties in Iraq, and they brought us embarrassing diplomatic cables. Here let’s take a little stroll down memory lane and examine some of the silliest WikiLeaks bans that took place throughout 2009 and 2010.

In my spare time, I read a lot of wikis (I really need a more interesting life). Typically, what happens is that I’ll hear of a subject, find a wiki that covers that subject, and then I’ll end up reading the entire collection of articles for a long time. Granted, I’m sure that at least some of you do it too, so I thought I’d share some sci-fi wikis with you.

Our story starts with something called TiddlyWiki. In a nutshell, TiddlyWiki is a single-file wiki, which makes heavy use of JavaScript. You can download it to your own computer, Dropbox or USB stick, and use it to maintain notes about anything. That’s lovely, but it’s not exactly a website in the common sense of the word. These days, there are a lot of businesses, both online and offline, that make use of wiki platforms to help generate teamwork and collaboration, while remaining at remote locations. With Tiki Wiki, you can host it on your own web server so that you can decide exactly how it looks and functions, and at the same time you can access your Wiki from anywhere in the world.
