I am an avid user of Nuance’s Dragon Dictate voice dictation application. Despite the program’s quirks and misrecognitions, I use it because it relieves the stress of typing by hand, and because it also types four to five times faster than I do.

Though Nuance’s PC and Mac speech recognition programs are relatively expensive, the company provides several free mobile apps that allow users to leverage the power of voice recognition. The company’s latest release, PaperPort Notes for the iPad may be useful to students and for those who want to use their iOS device for notetaking and annotating documents.

Main Features

PaperPort Notes is very similar to many other iPad note apps. It allows you to make typed and free handwritten notes using a stylus or your finger, make audio recordings, change fonts and font sizes, and much more.

But of course because this is a Nuance app, it includes a voice recognition feature that allows you to dictate your thoughts or what you read from existing text. PaperPort seems to be the only app of its type to feature text dictation.

PaperPort also includes a search feature, copying and pasting, bookmarking the pages, and the ability to capture and import selected content from the web, or entire documents from Dropbox and other sources.

Handwriting & Audio Recordings

There are a slew of free handwriting notebook apps, like Noteshelf, Penultimate, and Bamboo Paper that provide near real-life pen and paper quality when using a stylus pen.

While it’s great to see this feature in PaperPort, the digital results (see screenshot above) from handwriting are not as good and smooth as when compared to other notebook apps (see Noteshelf screenshot below).

The audio recording feature of PaperPort, however, does work very well. It will be useful for recording lectures while taking notes, or simply recording your thoughts verbally.

Audio recordings are affixed to a single page, so if you add a new page while a recording is active, PaperPort will automatically stop the recording for the previous page and start a new recording for the current one. Each individual page can be labeled and deleted, and all are kept organized in a drop-down box.

Voice-Recognition Feature

Probably the most inviting reason to download PaperPort is to use its voice recognition feature. Similar to other Nuance mobile apps you can dictate your thoughts or read them from existing text, and PaperPort will process and type out what you dictate.

The feature works fairly well (see unedited dictated note above); however, the biggest drawback is that you cannot see the results of your dictation until after you tap the Finished button. In the desktop versions of Nuance’s voice recognition programs, you see the results of your dictation nearly immediately after you pause after dictating a phrase or sentence. So as with the other mobile dictation programs, you will probably not use this feature for long extended pieces of writing.

You can use the voice recognition program in any page or document you import into PaperPort. You simply tap the Text box icon in the menu bar, and then touch-and-drag across an area on the page to either make typed notes or to start dictation by tapping the Tap & Speak button above the software keyboard.

You can edit dictated notes and add more dictations within the same note. The voice program provides the best capture when using a headphone mic or the mic installed on the iPad. It will not do a good job of recognizing and typing lectures given by someone standing in a room.

PaperPort also allows you to change the font style and size of text, as well as the type of background for added notes. You can select to have text-only, border, sticky style note, or custom image background.

Other Features

A few other advanced features in PaperPort include the ability to add various styles of paper, e.g. white or yellow lined, or graphing paper.

You can also import existing documents from Dropbox, Box.net, or from your PaperPort Anywhere account—annotate them and add written or dictated notes and recordings.

In addition, PaperPort includes a feature for capturing content from its built-in Web browser and other imported documents. You can select both text and images to add to the clipboard and paste them into any document or note page.

And finally, notes and imported documents in PaperPort can be exported in PDF format (with password protection) via e-mail, Google Docs, Dropbox, direct printing, etc.

PaperPort Notes for the iPad requires iOS 4.2 or later and is available for free in the iTunes App Store. Let us know what you think of it.

One of the most compelling reasons to own an iPhone 4S is the voice assistant known as Siri. Siri does some awesome stuff, but what if you could make Siri even more awesome with a simple tweak? From the beginning, people have messed with Siri using proxies, but for the average user, that is too much work. Thankfully, there is Assistant Extensions for owners of jailbroken iPhones.

This extension removes many of Siri’s limitations and allows you to do things you never imagined possible. As I said before, Siri is awesome, but like so many other things on the iPhone, it is arbitrarily limited. Thankfully, jailbreaks allow you to remove many of these limitations. It took almost no time after the iPhone 4S was jailbroken for the community to release an amazing Cydia tweak that extends Siri’s core functionality now, and opens a whole slew of options for the future.

Installation

Assistant Extensions is available in the BigBoss repository, which is one of the default Cydia repositories. Simply search Cydia for Assistant Extensions, click on it and click “Install” on the top right corner of the screen. You can also check out their official website. When finished, Cydia will prompt you to respring your phone.

Once it is finished respringing, you will be ready to take Siri to a new level.

What Can It Do?

Out of the box, the app can do many awesome things. Using this tweak, you will be able to compose a new tweet with Siri. Simply say “tweet” and the text of the tweet, and Siri will compose and send your tweet for you. If you want to see your tweet before it is sent, then you will need to say, “show tweet” and then the text of the tweet. This will open a box with the tweet, so you can make sure Siri got it right before sending.

I cannot really understand why Siri cannot tweet out of the box, but with Assistant Extensions, she can.

Using Assistant Extensions, Siri can launch applications. Both regular and jailbreak apps can be launched using Siri. Simply say “Launch” or “Open” and the name of the app, and Siri will quickly launch that app for you.

You can also use Siri in conjunction with SbSettings. You can toggle on and off various system options using this awesome app. You can say, “Turn on Bluetooth,” for example, which obviously turns Bluetooth on. For a complete list of available toggles say “List toggles” to Siri, and she will happily tell you everything she can turn on and off and their current status.

If you are feeling bored you can also say, “Should I…” and something you would like to do. Who knew Siri could also be a magic 8-ball? You can also just make Siri say stuff. Just tell her, “say…” and what you want her to say. It is somewhat useless, but fun nonetheless.

Are you lonely? Well, why not have a conversation with Siri? Simply say “let’s chat” and wait a few moments for Siri to load herself into chat mode. Once she says she is ready, you can chat about pretty much anything. Now, this is important, when you are done talking with Siri make sure to say “goodbye” because when she is in chat mode she will not do any of her normal functions. Saying “goodbye” gets her back to regular Siri mode.

The Future

What makes this application stand out above the rest is the fact that people can create their own extensions for Siri, as long as they know how to program (which I don’t). This opens up the application to endless possibilities of what people can make Siri do. As an example, the developer included a tweak that allows you to search YouTube from Siri. Simply say, “search……on YouTube” and Siri will pop up a list of matching results.

The developer of the app put a list of ideas for things that Siri could do, and I must say that any of these would be awesome, and I am sure creative-minded members of the jailbreak community will come up with some even better ones. Check out his list of ideas:

Complete social network integration (what’s new on Facebook, post on Facebook….)

Chat bots.

Completing original Apple intentions like local search for countries where it is not yet available.

Search for known sites like IMDB, eBay….

Remote controllers – control your Mac/Apple TV with Siri.

Translators (it was made already; check out Lingual on Cydia now).

As you can see, the possibilities are endless. It has already done some pretty amazing things, and as more and more developers start implementing their own take, this could become one of the best Cydia tweaks ever made.

It’s not safe to use your cell or smartphone while driving, but we all know how convenient it can be to talk on the phone or send a text message, especially to inform someone you’re on our way or that you’ll possibly be late.

The key to using your iPhone while driving is to reduce the number of steps it takes to make a call, send a text message, or check driving directions.

The iPhone includes a few built-in features and apps that might be useful while driving, and there a few third-party apps that can help keep your eyes on the road.

Voice Activation

The Siri app available in iPhone 4S includes the most advanced voice activation features for making phone calls, sending text messages, playing songs, and much more. Using it while driving can enable you to keep your eyes on the road, instead of trying to type a phone number or send a text message, which you should never try to do while driving.

If you don’t have iPhone 4S, no problem, because the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and and 4G also feature enough voice control features that come in handy while driving. See my article, “Stop Tapping & Start Talking: Voice Control Your iPhone.”

Pasties

I never attempt to type a text message while driving, but I do use an app called Pasties ($1.99 or Free Lite version) to send preset, commonly used messages to my wife and a few other designated people. With Pasties, you set up individual common messages (e.g., “I’m on my way.” “I’ll be late.” “Call me later.”) you want to text or send via email.

Pasties can also save you a few more taps because it allows you to set a message to a specific person in your Address Book. When you tap on the message it will paste it in a new SMS addressed to the assigned person, and then you simply tap again to send it. It would be great if the message were sent with only one tap, but at least it keeps you from typing messages while driving.

Face Dialers

I’ve never liked the Favorites list in the Phone app of the iPhone. It requires 2-3 taps to access, and if you have more than a few people on the list, it can be difficult to read and navigate especially while driving. So this is where an app like Face Dialer (.99 cents) comes in handy. It allows you create photo icons of people you call, text, email frequently, and initiate contact with a single tap.

You can put all your photo contacts in one folder, or put the icon of the person you call the most on your homepage. By using this app you don’t have to hunt for a contact’s name in your Address Book or your Favorites list.

The ad supported Tatap Call free is another option that enables you set up phone icons for the people you call regularly. You can double-tap on an icon to make the call directly, or a single tap will display menu for calling, texting, and emailing the selected contact. The add-free version is .99 cents.

iPhone Earphones

Also, don’t forget that the earphones that come with the iPhone are also useful while driving. If you must talk on the phone while in route, the earphones allow you to both answer a phone call and talk to someone using the mic button on the cord.

You press the button once to receive a call and press it again to end it. If you receive a call while talking someone else, you again press the button once to switch over to the new call, and press again to end it and return to the original call.

Voice Search

It’s not uncommon to need to search for an address or directions while driving, but again it can be a big distraction to do so especially if you’re trying to manually type a message. If you must do a search while driving, two handy apps, Google search app and Dragon Go come in handy.

Both of these apps have really good voice to text recognition features. And most often when you get search results, you can simply tap on the phone listing to make a call, or the listed address to open it in Map application or to get directions.

See my article Dragon’s free mobile apps to find more tips about voice to text recognition for the iPhone.

Let us know about the apps you find handy for safer driving while using the iPhone.

There are many wacky, interesting, useful and just plain fun apps you can install on your smartphone. When we come down to it, no app is really absolutely essential, and we all did very well without any of them. But having all this rich abundance of apps at our fingertips truly makes the world a more colorful place.

One app which definitely added color to my life is Blip.me. This cute little app turns your phone into a sort of mini walkie-talkie, or at least gives it push-to-talk capabilities, which can also be combined with text chatting. The great part about it is you can send messages to anyone, not only people with smartphones and who are using the app. The app itself is available for both Android and iOS, so you can enjoy voice and text chats using only your data plan with anyone who has an Android device or an iPhone.

Getting Started

As mentioned above, you don’t have to install Blip.me to receive voice messages from it, but it’s more fun if you have it installed. It also allows you to send voice messages yourself and engage in voice and text chats.

To start, download Blip.me for Android [2.2+] or iOS. Note that I tested the app only on Android, so do let us know how it fares on iOS. Once downloaded, the app will ask for your name and phone number. The app works with phone numbers, similar to WhatsApp, but still uses your data plan instead of your texts or calls plan.

Once you do that, the app will send you an access code via text. The text arrives within seconds, and if you have SMS popups, you don’t even have to leave the app. Enter your code and you’re on your way.

If you want, you can now share the app with some friends. It could be fun for your friends to have the app too, but they will get the chance to download it once they get the first voice message from you.

If you don’t want to share right now, tap on “Skip”. That’s it! You’re ready to start.

Sending & Receiving Messages

You can now browse your phone’s contacts and choose someone to send a voice message to. You can send a message to one person or to a group of people. Simple browse and tap the contacts of your choice.

Once you’ve chosen your contacts, the “Hold & Speak” button will appear. All you have to do now is press the button and hold it.

This nice graphic will pop up, and you can now speak directly into the “microphone” and the app will record the message.

The minute you let go of the button, your message will be sent. If your friend doesn’t have Blip.me installed, he will get a text message with a link to the voice message. The message can be played using any media player on the device, and also includes a link to download the app.

If your friend does have the app installed, you can now engage in a voice and text chat to your heart’s content. Switch between voice and text using the buttons on the top right. You can also turn the speaker on and off. When the speaker is off, you can listen to voice messages by holding the phone to your ear. Pretty useful if you’re on the bus or anywhere else where you don’t want other people to hear your messages.

The messages are received instantly, and the whole thing really does feel almost like a walkie-talkie. You push the button, speak, and then very quickly receive a reply which is auto-played if you’re on this screen. You can play messages over and over again by tapping the play button.

One major thing I found lacking in Blip.me is popups. When you already have the app installed, and get a new message, the phone plays a distinct tune, but there is no way that I could see to have it also display a popup. This means that if I miss the sound for some reason, I might miss the message entirely until I open Blip.me.

When you do hear the sound and want to listen to your new message, simply launch Blip.me and you will get to this screen.

These are all your recent chats. They are sorted by last message time, so the first one will be the one where you can find your new message.

Why Is This Better Than Simple Voice Mail & Texts?

True, you can always call someone and leave a message on their voicemail, but that uses your calling plan and is a much slower process for the receiving side, who has to call the service, dial in the code, and then listen to your message (something I rarely feel like doing).

It’s also nice to be able to combine voice and text in the same interface; some things work better with voice and others work better with text. You can also use Blip.me as a personal reminder app, by sending voice and text messages to yourself.

Above all, Blip.me provides a truly enjoyable way to interact with your friends, which is easy, quick, and beautifully designed.

Bottom Line

There are several things I would like to see added to Blip.me to make it perfect – said popups, a way to search through contacts, the ability to send messages to any phone number (not just those in my contact list), and the ability to add and delete contacts from an existing conversation.

These additions will make the app truly awesome, but even as it is, it’s a must-try app if you’ve ever wanted to get that walkie-talkie feel on your phone. Do you know of similar apps we should try? Share in the comments!

Similar iPhone voice apps, like Vlingo also allow you to voice Twitter and Facebook messages and do Google searches.

But you may not know that your iPhone has a few built-in voice control features that can save you the trouble of typing keystrokes. This feature indicates that we can expect even more and similar voice command technology in future releases of the iPhone.

Let’s explore this potentially powerful iPhone voice control feature further here in this article.

Making Phone Calls

The most useful voice command feature of the iPhone is the ability to make phone calls, particularly to contacts in your Address Book. This especially comes in handy when you must make a call while driving, or when you simply should not be distracted by having to look at the keyboard on your phone.

To make a voice command call, simply press and hold the home button of your iPhone. A blue Voice Control screen will appear followed by a short beep.

At that point, you simply say, “Call/”dial” [contacts name].” You will receive a verification of your command. If your contact has more than one number, the iPhone will by default dial the main number.

You will get better results if you know the precise name of your contact, and which number you want to call. So for example, if you say “Call Apple Computer > Tech Support,” the iPhone will identify that number and call it.

You may also use commands like, “Call Peter > work,” or “mobile.” And of course you can simply have the iPhone call a dictated number, such as, “Call (or Dial) 555-1212.”

Nicknames

If you have contacts whose names are difficult to pronounce, you can actually create a nickname, useful for making voice control commands. To do this, launch your Phone app and select a contact for whom you want to set a nickname.

Tap the Edit button and scroll down to “add field.” In the next window, select “Nickname,” and type it. Now all you have to do is use that nickname when sending the voice command.

Multiple Matches

If you use a voice command for a contact who shares the name of another contact, the iPhone will say, “multiple matches found.” From there, you choose and say the one you want to call.

When making voice commands, you will also want reduce any ambient noise so the phone can clearly hear your command. In my use of this feature, I have found nearly 100% accuracy in making the correct call.

Music Commands

The voice control features of the iPhone are not just limited to making phone calls. You can also send commands for navigating the iPod app of your phone. You can initiate music commands from within any application by simply, again, pressing and holding the home key on your phone.

The only slight challenge with these commands is that you need to know the name of a specific artist, album, title, song, or playlist that you want the iPhone to select and play in your music library.

Taken from a Voice Control Cheat Sheet, this is a list of music commands:

“Play”/“Play music”.
“Play playlist” plus playlist name. “Play playlist gym songs.”
“Play album” plus artist name. “Play artist Pink Floyd.”
“Pause”/Pause music.”
“Previous song.”
“Shuffle.”
“Genius”/Play more like this”/Play more songs like this.”
“What’s playing?” (general information)
“What song is this?”, “Who sings this song”, or “Who is this song by?” (specific information)

There a dozens of other voice commands Apple could include in the iPhone to really enhance this feature; such as commands for launching apps, switching apps, activating Bluetooth, and controlling the volume on the device. This technology is already present in Mac OS X, so it shouldn’t be too hard to add to the iOS.

Let us know if you use voice control commands on your iPhone, and how successful you find it to be.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/0-heytell-intro.png">It’s no secret that apps are the thing of the future. In many cases, they give our phones enhanced functionality that you wouldn’t otherwise get from them, depending on the phone you have of course. Last month, for instance, I gave you 3 Fun & Simple Phone Apps That Will Change The Way You Text Message. Those apps took a universal thing – text messaging – and transformed how we do that with our phones.

This month I’m giving your phone free push-to-talk phone service with HeyTell. Push-to-talk, or PTT, is a way of communicating via a 2-way radio of sorts, and it provides a form of instant communication between yourself and the person you’re calling. In this article, I’ll explain the concept of PPT further, as well as show you what you can do with HeyTell.

What Is HeyTell?

HeyTell takes the dialing out of making a phone call. It’s an app that let’s you send and receive voice messages with other HeyTell users by pressing a single button on your phone. They have a great video demonstration on their website, as well as this statement describing HeyTell:

HeyTell is a cross-platform voice messenger that allows you to instantly talk with and locate friends and family. No account needed – just start the app, choose a contact, and push the button to start talking!

Voice messages are said to be quicker than SMS and have very low data usage (no more than sending an email). As stated, the app is free to use and you can use it on 3G, EDGE, and WiFi connections.

More HeyTell Features

HeyTell is very easy to use. You just fire up the app, select the person you want to leave a message for from your contacts, and press the Hold and Speak button to begin recording your message. While you’re doing this, you’ll be able to see the person’s location using the GPS function.

Messages can be listened to from your inbox at any time. Push notifications are enabled to alert you whenever a voice message is received. If you ever get an “Inbox Full” message, this just means your friend has to listen or reply to the messages you’ve already sent before you can continue to send them more.

At 16 kHz, HeyTell delivers messages with twice the frequency range of a cell phone call. It supports earpiece and speakerphone functionality, as well as microphone for the iPhone/iTouch. With the app, you can also favorite and export messages you like to email or Facebook.

Privacy

Whenever I write a story about communication apps I get questions regarding privacy. With HeyTell, you can choose from three different privacy levels to control how users can contact you. To connect with other users without invites, use Low privacy. Medium and High require you to accept an invite before connecting with others. Contacts can be quickly blocked, also.

If you elect to, you can share your location with selected contacts while you talk. In order to do this, you must have the Maps page open when sending a HeyTell message. To protect your privacy, your location will not be sent out unless you approve and have that page open.

You don’t need to share personal information to connect with HeyTell contacts either, so you can connect without sharing phone numbers or email addresses.

Enough privacy for you? You can also save conversations and replay them offline, or delete them on-demand (there’s a Delete button when you swipe the conversation left or right). Furthermore, all data and audio you transmit through HeyTell to your friends is encrypted in transit.

Where Can I Get HeyTell?

If you own an iOS device, HeyTell is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation), and iPad. It requires iOS 3.0 or later, though. You can get a hold of this app on iTunes.

If you’re an Android user, you can find the app on Android Zoom, or just use a bar scanning app to scan the image below.

Conclusion

There you have it, push-to-talk for your iPhone or Android device. Finally my phone has the capabilities of those old school Sprint phones, which admittedly I always wanted but never went for, because the push-to-talk was the only attractive feature. You won’t have to worry about that with today’s smartphones.

HeyTell can be used as a walkie talkie, intercom, or instant voice messaging system to send quick messages to friends and family with iPhones, iPods, or Droids. There’s definitely a lot of functionality to be had using this application.

What’s your favorite phone app that enhances the functionality of your device?

That person later refused to admit that they’d ever made the call at all.

With the recorded voice from the phone call and a clip of the person denying the accusation, I set to work trying to find a way to prove that the voices were one and the same.

I admit that I’m a bit obsessed with voice technologies. This is why I’ve been waiting for Google Voice to become more advanced with its voice recognition technology, and it’s why I love PC voice control apps like Tazti. However, when it comes to digitally comparing voices, I was at a loss. You’ve probably seen those spy movies where the computer can automatically identify the voice of a known criminal with the voice print alone.

To be honest, once I discovered Sonogram Visible Speech, I realized that spectrogram voice technology actually is currently a viable way to solidly identify a person by their voice alone.

Understanding Spectrogram

If you know about chemical isotopes, then you know that with isotopes, chemists can identify the chemical makeup of compounds by isolating the basic elements and using the breakdown to identify the individual components of any mixture. In much the same way, an audio spectrogram breaks down audio sound into basic frequencies. The interesting thing about the human voice is that no one speaks in one frequency. Your mouth, nasal passages and the structure of your voice box determines the mixture of frequencies that make up your somewhat unique voice.

Sonogram Visible Speech is a free spectrogram software application that will take video or audio files and break down the audio track into the entire spectrum – all of its frequencies throughout the entire time frame of the track. A completed spectrogram looks like the image below.

As you can see, the bottom track looks like the basic sound wave that you’d see in a program like Audacity, however the center pane displays each segment of the sound file in its entire frequency layout. The amazing thing about this software is that there are many other waveforms you can use to examine your sound file. These are especially for advanced users.

You can configure how each of those wave forms displays by going into the the “Options” menu, and selecting “General Adjustment.” Here you can define how the logarithmic graphs calculate output and the general display setup of all available charts.

If the sound is fairly quiet, or the voice you’re analyzing is a whisper, you may want to consider using the logarithmic frequency display. You enable it from the “Options” menu and select “Logarithmic Frequency.” This will somewhat “magnify” the significant areas of frequency in the spectrogram.

This can really help to identify clear frequency patterns that identify someone from the sound of their voice. If you’re completely lost, and you don’t know where to start, clicking on “Help” and going to “Online Help” will open up the very well written Sonogram Online Help manual. This is a great place to start if you’re new to spectrogram audio analysis.

An Experiment With Spectrograms Using Ghost Hunting

The beauty of this software is that it is good for many different uses. One of the artifacts that comes up often in ghost hunting, a personal interest of mine, is “electronic voice phenomenon” – where the voice of an apparition or ghost allegedly shows up on audio recordings. These recordings are scattered throughout the web, so I decided to pull a few off of the ghost hunter websites and do a spectrogram analysis.

The spectrogram shows that the frequencies of the voice are generally low, but to get a better picture of the voices in the recording, you need to open up the additional waveforms. The Autocorrelation View calculates “pitch” in the time frame where you hover the mouse.

The “ghost” has an average pitch frequency of about 129.0 hz. Scrolling to the end of the recording where you hear the investigator’s voice, the calculated pitch frequency is about 208.0 hz (which makes sense because it’s a female voice and the ghost recording sounds male.)

Opening up the Fast Fourier display reveals even more detail about the voices. This chart quickly breaks down the primary frequencies and displays them in a color code.

In this case, the breakdown of frequencies is spread apart, with some high, but a good number of low frequencies in the mix as well. However, the investigator in the room is clearly speaking in a voice that is clustered in frequency more toward the high end of the range, as shown here.

This quick analysis proved that the two voices are quite different, but this is only a basic example of the capabilities of this powerful software. Basically, any situation where a breakdown of frequencies of a sound wave can help – this is the software for you. It’s easy to learn, quick to set up and configure, and it performs as well or better than any paid spectrogram software on the market.

Do you have any projects that could use a spectrogram? Have you ever tried Sonogram Visible Speech? Share your insight in the comments section below.

Services like Skype offer free calls overseas to other computers and really cheap rates to overseas phones.

That’s all well and good, but frequently using such services results in complaints on the other end about poor VoIP audio quality. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t panic: in all likelihood this is a problem you can solve easily. You just need to tweak your home network, and your computer, to use VoIP to its fullest potential.

Again, don’t panic; it’s easier than it sounds. Take a deep breath and we’ll go over a few things you can try.

Change Your P2P Settings

Most ISPs provide a much better rate for downloading than they do for uploading. This is important, because when you’re having a conversation on Skype or any other VoIP service you’re depending on your uploading capabilities quite a bit.

If you like downloading things from peer to peer networks such as bittorrent, you’re also uploading quite a bit. High upload rates on such services could be hogging bandwidth you need to ensure high VoIP audio quality, causing delays in your conversation or even distortion.

As such, anyone who makes use of both P2P and VoIP should seriously consider capping their upload rate in their file-sharing application of choice; you’ll find the option to do so in the network settings panel of most peer to peer programs.

I myself cap uploads at 30 kb/s, and find this leaves my calls sounding great without comprising my commitment to seeding one to one. Your sweet spot might be different, depending on the speed of your Internet access, so experiment (and post your findings below!)

Check Your Wireless Networks For Conflicts

You might not be getting all you possibly could out of your wireless network. If not, the VoIP audio quality of conversations made using that network will certainly be compromised.

One common problem with WiFi setups, particularly in urban areas, is using a saturated channel. WiFi uses radio waves, and too many networks on the same frequency can lead to a slow connection…and lag in VoIP conversations.

Free web app WiFi Stumbler can show you how many networks are on a given channel, meaning it’s the perfect way to find out if this problem is affecting you. If your channel is crowded simply access your router’s configuration tools and change the setting to an empty one. Not only will your VoIP work better…your Internet will be faster in general.

Secure Your Wireless Network

Speaking of your wireless network: is it secured? If not your neighbours could be using up all your uploading capability without you even realizing it. It’s admirable to want to share your Internet access with the community, but if you want to make high-quality phone calls over your internet connection it might be time to raise your shields.

Access your router’s configuration tools and enable WPA encryption. For more detailed information check out Aibek’s article How To Secure Your Wireless Network.

Check Volume Levels

Still having trouble? The problem might not be your Internet connection. Check your computer’s volume levels and ensure your microphone is loud enough. It may seem obvious, but you’d be amazing how many times I heard complaints about being hard to hear only to realize my mic settings were too low. It never hurts to check!

Get A Better Microphone

Still have problems? Your microphone might not be ideal for what you’re trying to do. Many microphones built into laptops, for example, pick up not only those sitting directly in front of the computer but also a lot of background noise as well. White noise you don’t even notice may be interfering with your call, making you hard to understand.

The best fix for this is to get a better microphone. Headsets tend to work quite nicely at not picking up white noise, and can be easily found at any electronics store.

Conclusion

VoIP can be a very cheap alternative to a traditional phone line, particularly if you tend to make a lot of long-distance calls. Ensuring that you sound good can take some tweaking, but it’s typically worth it.

Do you have any tips to share with frustrated VoIPers? Type them in the comments below and help reduce any suffering that might be out there. Also feel free to chime in if you have any questions; the MakeUseOf community is a helpful one.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Andoirdlogo.jpg">In 2007, Google, with full support for the open source community and 65 hardware, software and telecommunication companies, quietly unveiled the Google Android operating system. I say quietly because, like most things Google, they get launched, tested, improved upon, then take over the world.

This year seems to be the beginning of the full launch of Android as a powerful mobile operating system. Now that so many people are transitioning to Android, what are some of the coolest tricks and tips Google has hidden in its OS?

Below is a taste of the less known features you can find.

Please note : due to the large variety of models and carriers, not all of these features are available for all Android versions and phone models.

Gesture Search

One of the new Labs applications forAndroid operating system 2.0 phones is called Gesture Search. It allows you to search your phone by using your fingers to write letters on the screen instead of using the keyboard.

Instead of typing letter by letter on a search bar, simply tap the little hand sign on the screen and draw a letter. Android will search your phone for anything starting with the letters you type.

Gesture Search can be configured to search through your whole phone, or you can select it to search only through certain specific folders, such as contacts or music. You can also erase a query by gesturing.

Going across it horizontally, left to right, erases the entire query, and going across right to left removes the last letter or space in the query.

Creating Shortcuts & Adding Slots To Your Homepage

You can create a shortcut to your favorite websites on your homepage by simply pressing and holding any site in your browser’s bookmarks and then selecting “Add Shortcut to Home”.

Now what happens when your home slots are full?

Download a little free app called “UltimateFaves Carousel” from Google Market. It allows you to add 16 new icons to one slot, but using a very cool 3D rotating viewer to a single slot.

The Many Uses Of The Search Key

The search key on Android gives you specific search options according to where you are, particularly with Google sites. For example, if you click the search button while on Google Maps, you’ll get a prompt for street, city and zip code, but if you click the search key while on YouTube, it will search YouTube for the term you selected.

Unfortunately ATT has disabled several of Android’s features and added their own choices to the phone and locked them in place, so the search feature on ATT phones uses Yahoo, not Google, so the features don’t work the same way.

Browsers & Their Perks

The full HTML browser from Google does a great job at showing sites in full HTML, but a few other Android-compatible browsers have their own charm. One of them is the Dolphin browser, which is an app that allows you to download YouTube videos to your phone to watch on the go. It is fully integrated with social networks, allows you to sync with Google Bookmarks and to save webpages to read later. The Gesture Search feature also works with the Dolphin browser.

Voice Dial & Its Other Uses

Voice Dial is one of the apps that come with Android, and it has more uses than it seems. You can, of course, use it to call people without having to look for their number. Simply click on voice dial and say the name of the person you want to call or say “call (name of person)” to make a call. But you can use Voice Dial to search for many other shortcuts.

Want to know detailed information about your battery, such as charge and voltage? Open the Voice Dial app and say “Open battery Info“. You can basically open most programs by saying “open” and the name of the program. Make sure you pronounce things clearly though. I’ve called the wrong person before.

Shortcut To Programs You Used Last

On some phone models, Android will show you the last six programs you used if you press and hold the home button.

Voice Search

Currently available for Android 2.0 and up. Simply click the microphone button on the search widget and wait for the ‘Speak Now” prompt. You can just say what you are looking for and Android will find it for you.

That feature is also available on the Android browser. Press the “Menu” button and tap “Search“. You will see the microphone there and you can use it for search words or for website URLs.

Connecting To Your Computer To Transfer Your Files

You don’t need to have any special software to connect your Android phone to your computer. Some models will automatically detect if you are connected via USB and prompt you with options.

If that doesn’t happen, after attaching the phone via the USB cable (it usually comes with the phone), an image of a USB appears on the top bar. Tap on it and drag down, then click on the USB connected box and the option to mount appears. Click on it and you can now drag and drop files to it like you would do to an external drive.

A Few Other Tips

Sync your Outlook contacts without using an Exchange server, by using an open-source utility called GO Contact Sync.

You can cut, copy & paste – just press and hold on any text until select appears. Click on it and use your finger to highlight the part you want to copy. An option to copy or search appears. It doesn’t work on every version of Android or with every browser. I tested it with a few browsers (seems to work on all versions with Opera Browser) and several Android 2.0 versions.

Download the Google Voice app for full integration with Android’s address book and contacts. You can even call numbers on most websites simply by pressing and holding the numbers on the webpages.

With so many features, there are sure to be many other tricks you discovered and we missed. Share them with us in the comments.

iPTT allows you to talk with anyone who has downloaded the push-to-talk iPhone app, whether with friends or complete strangers. HeyTell allows you to talk only with people who have your personal contact information, such as your cell phone number or email address. We’re going to take a brief look at what each push-to-talk iPhone app has to offer, so that you can determine which one is right for you.

<!--more-->
<h3>iPTT</h3>
<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iptt/id311931218?mt=8">iPTT</a> [iTunes link] is a relatively new app, and while there are still a few features that are lacking, it is definitely a step in the right direction. After downloading it from the iTunes App Store, you will be prompted to create a free account, and then you're ready to talk to friends and strangers alike.

You can tune into one of the public channels to have a chat with random strangers, although you should be warned that the choice of topics can sometimes get pretty graphic, as this is an entirely anonymous and unmoderated way of talking to people around the world.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IPTT.jpg" alt="push to talk iPhone" width="580" height="290" /></p>
Tuning into a channel can be done, either by using the scroll wheel at the bottom of the screen, or by double-clicking the frequency itself to bring up the menu. From there you can select <em>Featured Channels</em>, and scroll through the various channels which include <em>iPhone, General Topics, iPad, politics</em>, along with channels dedicated for a variety of countries from the USA to Sweden to Oman.

If you would rather talk to people you know, simply choose a frequency that is not already in use for one of the featured channels, and share it with your friends. The push-to-talk iPhone app could be very useful for conference calls or online team meetings, but there is no way to block people from entering the conversation. If and when disposable password protected channels are added, it would take iPTT to another level.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/iPTT1.jpg" alt="push to talk iPhone" width="580" height="290" /></p>
Communication in the channels can take place either in <em>Public Mode</em>, where everyone tuning in can hear you when you have the floor, or you can switch to <em>Whisper Mode</em> for a private one-on-one chat with another person. If you're in a public channel, be sure to mute the public chatter first. You can then choose the person you would like to talk to privately by scrolling through the list of members present using the same scroll wheel at the bottom of the screen.

Other features available in iPTT include an ignore list, where you can choose to block specific users, and you can also mute whispers so that no one is able to communicate with you privately. iPTT works over 3G and WiFi.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/IPTT2.jpg" alt="push to talk iPhone" width="580" height="290" /></p>

<h3>HeyTell</h3>
The only other free solution available for push-to-talk on the iPhone is the app <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/heytell/id352791835?mt=8">HeyTell</a> [iTunes link]. HeyTell takes a very different approach than iPTT, and while you do not have to create an account, you do have to add your own number and email address to your contact list, which will be used as your identity.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/HeyTell.jpg" alt="push to talk iPhone" width="580" height="290" /></p>
The app makes use of the iPhone's push notification, by alerting you when a friend has sent you a message, and upon launching the app, you will be able to start communicating with them.

When you want to speak, hold the orange button down, and the app will also begin to automatically record your conversation. HeyTell can be used simply as a way to leave a voice message for a friend, or if you are both online at the same time, it is a great way to have a conversation.

HeyTell also allows you to share your location with your contacts as you speak, if you choose to, using the inbuilt GPS feature. As the developers point out, this is a great option to have if your friends aren't very good at giving directions.

HeyTell does afford you a lot more privacy than iPTT, allowing you to choose between three different levels. You can be contacted by anyone who has your phone number or email address, only by friends in your address book, or only by contacts whom you have already contacted.

The app is feature packed, allowing you to save and play back conversations, allowing you to block contacts, and it works over 3G, Edge and WiFi.

Have you used iPTT or HeyTell? Let us know what you think of them in the comments.
