Quick! How many synonyms for the word “awesome” can you come up with, right now? If it took you more than a moment to come up with around ten synonyms, your vocabulary may need some help. Professional writers aren’t the only people who should know plenty of words. Everyone uses language every day, and there’s often a single word that can replace five other words and mean exactly what we want to say. The challenge is to know that word well enough so you can whip it out when the time is right.

There are plenty of flash-card applications around, including the amazing AnkiDroid. But while AnkiDroid is an incredible app, it’s not a game. I’m a big believer in education through games. I think learning should be as fun and engaging as possible, and that the more interested you are, the better your retention will be. So, if you like your study mixed in with a bit of fun, keep reading for two fine picks from the Market.

Word Jam

Word Jam is composed of several different games, all aimed at helping you learn and retain new words. Above you can see “recall words”, a mode that gives you a word and has you guess the meaning. And here’s Match Words, where you stretch lines between words and their meanings:

There’s also a Hangman game:

If you don’t know what the word is, you can give up and reveal it (or just “die”, in which case the game would show you the word).

Another game mode worthy of mention is the crossword puzzle:

There are better crossword puzzle games for Android (which I may cover in a separate post), but Word Jam is not just a crossword puzzle, and can engage you in six different ways. Apart from the four we’ve seen, the game also offers Word Jumble and Word Search.

In Word Jumble, you must reorder letters to create a word. Word Search provides you with a collection of related words around a theme (“Groupings of people or objects”), and then you must find those words on a board. All in all, a fun collection of games with a simple aesthetic.

Wordaholic

Wordaholic is actually two different games: Wordaholic – Free Word Find and Wordaholic – Free Word Search. Pretty confusing (why not make it into one app?) but still fun. Both games let you play a hexagonal board full of random letters, where your goal is to create words. The “Find” variant gives you just the board, and you find any words you already know. The “Search” variant, more relevant to this post, is more like a crossword puzzle. That’s the one you see in the screenshot above. The game gives you a little riddle, and you need to figure out the word first, and then find that word on the board. Pretty challenging, because it involves switching between two different modes of thinking every turn.

Some of the questions are very tricky, such as “???? is an atomic element with the atomic number 10”. This is where the Hint button comes in handy: Tap it once for a tiny hint (“Four letters, starts with N”). If you still can’t figure out what it is, tap it again and the game will reveal the word (“The word is NEON”).

The game also offers an Easy mode, in which the words are already listed at the bottom of the screen and you just need to find them. This mode is still useful for learning new words, because you can tap a word to get its definition within the game:

Quite a lovely game for picking up some new words. I like the form factor. Hexagons always remind me of strategy games.

Your Own Favorites?

When it comes to word games on Android, the most popular ones are Words with Friends and Wordfeud. That’s why I didn’t include them in the post (I did include them in the Best of Android list). But do you play anything else that has to do with words? If so, do share in the comments.

A dictionary is the most basic aid you can turn to if you want to improve your skills in any language. The thick volumes of yore are still there (some as bookends), but a modern pundit is more likely to consult an online dictionary or any of the smartphone dictionary apps that give the term ‘pocket dictionary’ a modern twist.

Online dictionaries aren’t only about words and their meanings. They also bring in other cool features which make for a fun learning experience for both children and adults alike.

Dictionary.com and its resources make it almost a portal that takes you on a journey of word discoveries. Word has it that it is probably the most frequented of online dictionary and reference sources on the web. Why not – after all you can do much more than merely look up a word here. Try these 8 for starters.

The Hot Word

Words are never one-dimensional. There’s always an interesting story behind them or you can create an interesting one around a word. The Hot Word shows just how interesting the English language is. The blog not only dives into the origins of words, but also discusses their present context. Even a casual read through the blog gives you interesting tidbits like the language that’s only spoken in one tiny part of Portugal.

Words!

This is a weekly compilation that picks up interesting definitions from areas of medicine, gardening, cooking, and more. Browsing through them takes you to entire word lists and in turn to their meanings. The compilation perks up interest because you might thing that you know all about a specific area, but the word list tells you that you still have some learning to do. Dictionary.com comes with comprehensive listings on medical terms, abbreviations, cultural words, idioms etc.

Solve a Daily Crossword

I can’t get to the Times crossword or solve it, but I do try my word associations and recall with the Daily Crossword here. You can time yourself, pause and save your progress, and even print the puzzles though it’s much better to solve them online. The game also gives you letter and word hints if you are stuck at a square.

By the way, if you are attempting to solve the Times crossword, you can take the help of the Crossword Solver here at Dictionary.com. Just a helpful tool to bookmark if you are into crosswords.

Fun ‘n Free Games!

The fun doesn’t end at crosswords but continues with the cool word based puzzles and games in the Games section. Making words starting with a provided letter sounds lame, but some interesting rules make the game a bit more challenging. There are more ‘complicated’ games like Word Kingdom which is like playing Age of Empires with words. Word Games has a lineup of nice games that should set up someone who is trying to get better with English.

Become a Word Millionaire with Word Dynamo

Word Dynamo is a beta feature but it already looks useful as an educational tool. Word Dynamo is about learning words in an engaging way. Word challenges are arranged according to grade levels and topics. You have to progress up by unlocking the levels as in any game. Quizzes, word lists, and word games make up Word Dynamo. You can also learn a bit about French, Spanish and Latin.

Which Word Is The World Searching For Today?

A small section that is tucked away near the foot of the homepage shows what the world is searching for on Dictionary.com. Capturing trending words from the whole web would be too much to ask for, so let’s do with what the nearly 50 million visitors landing here are making popular each day. You can look at Popular Searches, Words in the News, and Where Is It.

Rave on Quotes

There are many places you can go in your search for quotable quotes. Dictionary.com happens to be one more. There’s the Quote of The Day right on the homepage and more quotes beyond that. You can cite the quotes or choose to embed them in your blog.

Simply Translate

Last but not the least; Dictionary.com includes a very handy translation engine that can handle 50 languages. The translation is limited to 100 characters, but that should suffice for short bursts. One limitation is that the translator does not detect the language when you insert it into the field.

Dictionary.com goes beyond being a simple online dictionary. What sets it apart are these add-on learning features which make this a complete ‘word portal’. Which is your favorite online dictionary? If it’s this one, tell us what appeals to you here when you come looking for some meaning.

When communicating online, your vocabulary and the quality of your writing are a key part of the first (and second) impression you make. It’s important to be able to communicate clearly and come across as an intelligent human being, whether you’re just posting a quick tweet, applying for a freelance (or full-time) job, or even using a dating website.

Free website Vocabulary.com says it can help you improve your vocabulary by figuring out which words you don’t know, and then teaching you only those (without spending time on stuff you already know).

The first thing you’ll see on the site is a multiple-choice test aimed to assess your current vocabulary. Here’s what happens once you click one of the answers for a question:

That’s just the first question. Now let’s see what happens when you pick a wrong answer:

And let’s get the second one wrong, too:

And now let’s be totally dumb and get even the third shot wrong:

Okay, that doesn’t leave many options. Let’s pick the last one remaining:

“You’re a genius!“…..uh, right. False flattery aside, the site now provides you with a complete definition for the correct word, including a nice derivation (word origin). You can see it to the right of the main interface in the screenshot above. It comes from the dictionary integrated into the website, which we’ll get to in a moment. Once you’re done reading, click the “Next Question” button to continue the assessment.

There are also other types of questions:

As you can see, the question above doesn’t make you complete a sentence, but just pick the correct definition for a word.

Once you finish the first round, the site suggests you log in, either using Facebook or by creating a new account on the site itself:

Since I don’t have a Facebook account, I created an account on the site itself.

Some of the answers to the test can be a bit weird, because they use synonyms. Here’s an example for a particularly odd one:

While I agree “luxuriant” doesn’t mean “enhanced”, it certainly doesn’t mean “riotous” under any normal definition of the word. Sure, there is a definition that says “growing in extreme abundance“, but that’s a very rare definition of the word. So effectively, the game is asking you to define one rare word with another rare word, and they don’t exactly match in shades of meaning. Fortunately, most of the definitions do make sense.

Since we’re already speaking of definitions, now would be a good time to look at the integrated dictionary. Let’s look up the applicable definition for riotous:

Some of the definitions in the dictionary are very short. Personally, I prefer more comprehensive definitions, but these snappy and short definitions might help some people memorize the words better. There’s also an interesting usage meter and examples:

So you can see related words from the same family (not synonyms, though – those are shown under each definition), along with their frequency. Note that the meter isn’t perfect: In the screenshot above, “Riotous” appears twice for some reason.

Also, not all definitions are so short. Here’s an absolutely brilliant definition for “toady”, including a memorable word history:

I think that’s just fantastic, and many of the difficult words do have such in-depth definitions, which are written in a fun, easy-to-understand style.

Once you continue with the challenge a bit more, you’ll get to check out your progress:

There are also achievements you can unlock:

As you continue answering questions, pretty soon you start getting “review” questions with words you’ve already seen (and gave wrong answers for):

As you can see, each review question is worth only 75 points, as opposed to 100 points for an “assessment” question (containing a word the game hasn’t asked you about yet).

That’s pretty much all there is to it. The site provides you with a lovely opportunity to learn new words, both by looking up words you already know you want to learn (in the dictionary) and by randomly stumbling upon new words in the questions. The only thing I would improve is the quality of some of the questions – I feel they could sometimes stand a bit more depth. Still, I feel it really manages to make learning into a game.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/education.jpg" />As a blogger and writer, words hold special significance for me. It’s sometimes about discovering new words or finding out unknown meanings of the known ones; it’s also about going to the root of a word and searching out where it has branched to.

The numerous word sites available reflect this richness. We word lovers are better for it because it makes learning new words more fun.

The different type of word sites helps us explore the language in all its uniqueness. That also helps us fall in love with the language. My continuing search for cool word sites – regular or offbeat – has made me stumble on to some that most of us might miss among the crowd of the more popular ones.

Here are five more word based websites to explore and keep.

WordSift

It’s a web service which we have covered before. But a mention again is due because I find it immensely useful to construct a summary on any data that I paste on it. Any long piece of information is constructed around keywords, and WordSift usually manages to highlight the important ones. WordSift helps you to visualize the vocabulary structure of text by creating a tag cloud of important words. The bigger the word, greater is its frequency. You can sort the words and move them around with the mouse. Visual Thesaurus, the Google Images and video searches, and also the sample sentences help students create word associations.

Hot For Words

If words can be sexy, then this site shows how. The beautiful face behind the site belongs to Marina Orlova, a former model and now a linguist (more specifically, a philologist). Her YouTube series where she traces the origins of everyday English words is an internet sensation. The website complements her YouTube channel. The downside is that the site may not be suitable for kids. But it’s definitely the most entertaining word and vocabulary site out there.

What Does That Mean

WDTM is a question and answer site that’s devoted to words and their meanings. If you are confused over a word and its usage, maybe you can post your word problem here and wait for an answer from the community. You can contribute and earn ‘Karma points’ to move up the value chain on the site. The site is trying to build a free, community powered dictionary of English idioms, buzzwords, and catch phrases from around the world.

Tag Galaxy

Tag Galaxy is another cool word site that is more about visual representation of data than about words. But you can use it in some cool ways because every word you enter here becomes a keyword surrounded by related words. Oh yes, it’s all in a 3D-like photosphere with photos drawn from Flickr. The central word becomes the sun, and the related words turn into planets. You can spin the globe in any direction as it starts drawing in photo-tiles on its surface. Clicking on a photo enlarges it links to the original Flickr page. You can use it create interesting world associations combined with images.

Corpus of Contemporary American English

The 425 million word strong collection is the largest currently available. The words have been collected from diverse sources – spoken, fiction, popular magazines, newspapers, and academic journals. It is constantly updated and has powerful search features which allow you to wade through the extensive collection. You can search using word, phrase, related words, substring, part of speech, synonyms etc. Word comparisons across different genres can be made for usage differences and context. Here’s a YouTube video that shows you how to get started with the corpus.

If you missed our previous collection of websites on words and vocabulary, fret not. Here are some:

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/word-games.jpg" />It is usually work and productivity with Google Chrome extensions and browser apps. But then it’s serving me well in my off-hours too as I continue to discover new cool games and ‘time wasters’.

For the purpose of this article, let’s take up the cause of language and words. Playing word games (and falling in love with them) starts with the normal bouts of Scrabble and crosswords. If you fall in love with words, rest assured you won’t stutter with the language.

Word games help to continue that love affair with the language. Let’s combine English, learning, fun, and games and go over to Google Chrome’s Web Store to checkout some browser games to pass time and jiggle our brains too.

Here are five free, cool word games you can play on Google Chrome.

Qbox – Wisdom of the Ages

Do you like quotations and wisdom speak from the famous and wise? Then you would love to wade through nearly 1500 of them arranged according to three time periods – Old Times, Middle Ages, Modern Times. It is very challenging because the quote is shuffled and you have to beat the clock. Gameplay involves clicking on two letters positioned in the same column and building up the quote. You can use hints, but you lose points. There are bonus points for completing some words; and there are ‘locked tiles’ too which need to be unlocked before you can go forward. This game can make you tear your hair out.

Word Search Puzzle

The word search game is one of the more popular ones you can find in the Google Web Store. The simplicity of the game hides the difficulty – search for hidden words between letters of the alphabet. Each game has 20 words from 1000+ words selected randomly in a list and you have to search them out. You can choose between two difficulty levels to start with. The advanced level places the hidden words in all directions.

Semantic Wars

Semantic Wars is another guess-the-word game that you can play in Chrome. You have to guess letters of words from the given categories. Each correct word nets you some gold. Each error will decrease your limited wealth (or energy if you have no gold). Use your wealth wisely to train the 3 types of warriors and send them to enemy castles. With experience and victories, you open up new levels.

Draw My Thing

This is a multi-player social word-guessing game with a twist. You have to draw something on a canvas and opponents have to guess what the word is from the drawing. Players take turns with their secret words in the form of drawings. The game is just right for kids as it helps to stimulate their creativity and make them adept with word associations. It’s not so easy for adults also as word images are only limited by creativity.

Great Big Fancy Word Game

This word game playable on the Chrome browser is definitely for kids. Helping out the kiddies are Pinky Dinky Doo, and their little brother Tyler. This is basically a learning game for kids, helping them along with new (and fancy) words.

There are few more cool word games scattered around the Web Store. Start with these popular ones and tell us about the other cool Chrome based games you enjoy.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/play-button.jpg" />As a writer and blogger, words are what I am surrounded with in my waking hours. Putting them together into coherent sentences is my daily fix. But every wordsmith also needs to sharpen his axe from time to time. I have always found the best grindstone for that to be the numerous word games that can be played online for free. They not only let me play with letters, words, and sentences – but also give me a break from the occasional tedium. Word games also serve as an antidote to what befalls us all – the stumble of the writer’s block.

We have featured quite a few posts on word games and ways to have fun with language. For that head below where I have mentioned the links. For now, go right down and take a look at a few more word games I found while scouring the web. Let your creativity flow with these eight online word games while you take a break from your day job.

Verbotomy

The How to Play section of this word game describes it simply – Verbotomy is about creating words. Everyday a definition along with a cartoon is there for you to create a ‘new’ word. That’s a ‘verboticism’. After you create your verboticism, you can vote for other authors’s words to help select the winning verboticism for the definition. It’s a simple four step process – read the definition; create a new word; save your word; and vote for your favorite word. The screenshot above shows how the daily challenges are played out.

Word Association

On first look, this game does not seem to have any practical utility you can think of, apart from jogging your grey cells. You play the game by associating a new word to the word displayed on the screen. The challenge is to not break the chain of related words for as long as possible. The statistics page reveals the strong and weak word associations as the database gets built up around the words. Try it, the game progressively gets difficult and you will soon find yourself approaching the limits of your vocabulary.

Turn-O-Phrase

This is a game even kids can play. You are given a picture (or pictures) that stand in place of common English words, phrases, proverbs, or sayings. You have to guess what it is and enter it in the white box underneath the pictures. Solve each word puzzle and move on to the next picture in the series. As you play, you will earn points for solving each puzzle. If you get flummoxed, you can use the ‘Hint’ button to discover one of the hidden words. Of course each hint reduces the points you get when this particular puzzle is solved.

Crickler

Crickler is a not so easy game that can break you out of your language lull. What can you say when the instructions are themselves in the form of a letter puzzle. Clicker News Puzzles takes it cues from news items. You have to guess the words from the clues and fill up the boxes. The game has its own ‘artificial intelligence’ which adapts to your skill level. Each Crickler also works with a handicap system – just like golf – the lower your handicap; the more difficult will be the puzzle.

Clockwords

Clockwords is Flash game that takes you into Victorian London. As a brainiac inventor you have just made a machine that runs on the power of language. Just then your lab is broken into by mechanical insects sent by a rival inventor that have come to steal your secrets! You must think and type quickly to fend off the invaders. Just type in the right words and zap the pests.

The Enigma Device

The main site WordZap is filled with word games of different types, but I think you would like to try out this classic game based on the famous coding decoding device from WWII. The Java based game displays a histogram showing letter frequencies and a scrambled humorous quotation on top. Your task is to use one-letter substitutions to unscramble the code. It hasn’t been updated for a while but is still fun to play.

Retail Alphabet Game

This is not exactly a word game in that sense, but it’s great fun because it will test if you have been watching all those ads carefully. You will be given 26 alphabet letterforms, taken from product and corporate logos from well-known brands within the United States. Your job is to figure out the source of each. There are five to play so far.

Word Games

Word Games is an online Flash games site that focuses completely on games built around words. Word Games makes it easy to play games by organizing them into channels like Word Search games, Typing games, Crosswords games, Sudoku games, Mahjong games, Puzzles games and some more. The games are of the time-water variety and you go quickly in and out of them in a space of a few minutes.

If you have still some time to kill and words to fill try out our previous word and language related tool from the links below:

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/google-chrome.jpg" />Bloggers, wordsmiths, and writers of all hues live in a sea of words. Thanks to the web, we also live most of the time in our browsers. Looking up words for their meanings and definitions is no big deal. A glut of free online dictionaries has made it a matter of a selection and click. Helping you further are right-click context menu searches, browser add-ons and extensions. Just like any other browser, Chrome has its own legion of extensions that help us look up words and meanings as we browse.

The Chrome Web Store is where we are headed. Now let’s pick up seven extensions that make word searching not only easy, but also fun and educational.

Google Dictionary (by Google)

This dictionary extension has probably seen the most downloads. On a webpage, you can double click on any word and see its complete definition displayed in a bubble. The extension supports multiple languages and also can translate a foreign word to your default language. Clicking on the reference link takes you to the Google Dictionary page where you can see more web definitions on the word. You can set language and other choices from the Options menu of the extension.

If you want a word meaning with a right click, install the Context Menu Button for Google Dictionary.

Dictionary Lookup

This dictionary extension sources word meanings from Wiktionary, but what’s more revealing is the Dictionary Lookup Options page which tells you all about the handiness of this browser helper. The Content section allows you to streamline the information that you want to get with a click of the mouse. The meanings are displayed in a clean and minimal inline box. You can set the extension to show other info like usage examples, audio pronunciation and synonyms. You can also lookup manually-entered queries using a shortcut which displays a small lookup box.

Quickrr Dictionary

You can search for a dictionary meaning by clicking the address bar icon and entering the word in the field box. Quickrr also lets you lookup Google Dictionary, Google Image Search, and Wikipedia for the word. This extension could benefit from a richer display of meanings as it seems a bit too simplistic.

Image Definitions for Dictionaries

To enhance your vocabulary, it pays to use words in sentences and also visualize them with the help of real world images. This extension solves part of the recommendation by sourcing relevant images from Flickr and inserting them into the three online dictionaries it supports – Google Dictionary, Google Search (using the define: operator), and the Urban Dictionary. You can set it to search for ‘Safe’ images from the extension’s Options.

Urban Dictionary Search

If you are talking about Urban Dictionary and if you want to look up the usage of a slang or a colloquial word, then this handy extension is just the thing to have in your Chrome browser. Click on the icon and enter the word. You will be taken to the page with the meaning in a trice.

Phras.in

If you are in any way interested in the English language then this phrase comparison extension is a must install. This extension is for the grammar buffs who would like to see which among two phrases is a better fit. You can compare two phrases and also contextualize them to see their usage in real world sentences.

Codec Dictionary

So far, we have catered to the English buffs. As this is a tech website, you could also do a bit with the Codec dictionary. It’s a dictionary for multimedia geeks who want to look up words like DivX, colorspace, transcode etc. I have found it to be useful on more than one occasion. All the definitions are under 300 characters.

Remembering the meanings of all words that we are bombarded with every day may be a problem. Looking up their meanings and their usage context certainly is not with the help of these educational extensions. Do you have one installed in your Chrome extension gallery?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Shutterstock-WordPlay.jpg">Here’s to let you know that Scrabble (or Lexulous) isn’t the only word game going around. From the simple to the multiplayer games, words have defined an entire genre of online games. So come online and see the fun you can have with letters and words.

Word games online are not only about puzzles, although there are many of them like word games you can use for wasting a few minutes in the midst of a hectic day. If you have long left your school years behind, you might give these word games a go.

Word games these days come in various forms, sometimes disguised as time-wasters and sometimes as cool learning tools that can actually help to enrich your word power. So without further ado, fire up your browser and shuffle your alphabets for these cool word games online.

DeepLeap

The fast paced time wasting word game may remind you of Scrabble. The game is mentioned as unfinished, but you can play it without a hitch. The idea is to quickly create words and score points from the rapid switching letter tiles (75 in all). Points are awarded for longer words, correctly spelt words, and a bonus for having no tiles left at the end.

Cryptograms

Cryptograms are a secret method of writing using codes or ciphers to form cryptic letter combinations. You can play this game without the free sign-up or do that and go head to head with other players. The clock starts ticking and your challenge is to uncover the secret message within the time by correctly guessing the letters.

Etymologic

This word game requires a bit of knowledge, although you can get by with wild guessing. Either way, you will learn a lot about the origins of certain words. The word definition puzzle gives you a question and four possible answers to choose from. Like me, you just might find out that the word “bazooka” in fact came from a musical instrument invented by a comedian.

WordSplay

The massively multiplayer online word game gets its inspiration from Boggle, Hasbro’s board game. Gameplay involves going against a clock and creating words of three letters or more on a 4×4 or a 5×5 board by typing it in. Each game is 3 minutes long and you are scored on the basis of correct words formed. You can even form your own teams on this multiplayer site. I couldn’t register with a Gmail account for some reason, though Yahoo got me through.

VocabGenii

This game of guessing a few letters to form the word suggested by its meaning is more difficult than it looks. VocabGenii can really rev up your vocabulary with its testing word games. There are a few game modes and difficulty levels which you have to win. The game also lets you keep track of your progress on a pie-chart and see how many words you are getting right against how many you are skipping (see directory mention).

Knoword

This is also a similar game where you have to go against a timer and guess the word from the meaning given. Each correct answer also helps to extend your time limit. You can accumulate badges and additional points by achieving certain amounts of consecutively correct words (see directory mention).

Phrays

The concept is simple ““ everyday the site publishes a single word. Your job is to construct a sentence using that word. The sentence that gets the most popular votes from other members is the winner. I see this game as a creative way to break free from writer’s block (see directory mention).

Herd A Word

Herd-a-Word is a fast paced game of word construction. You have to connect unrestrained “letter balls” and form words as quickly as possible. The game has two modes ““ Herd Mode (with more word possibilities) and Line Mode (with less word possibilities). No log-in is required to play this game.

Some may regard these games as mere time wasters but these word based games move us towards fun and a more enriched vocabulary. We have already seen the value of edutainment with some of our previous posts ““

School can be one of the best things that ever happens in someone’s life. Or it can be the worst. There are always the teachers who think that their job is to make a student’s life miserable, the boring textbooks which are thicker than Harry Potter’s series, the never ending papers and assignments and pop quizzes and tests… You get the picture.

Luckily, in this digital age, everybody can turn to their computer for help. There are many applications dedicated to improve your study skills, as well as the overall school experience.

And for those Mac-user students out there, here are five free tools to help you survive, and win.

1. Schoolhouse

The first thing to do to achieve a better academic grades is to organize everything into one easy-to-observe placeholder. Schoolhouse, which dubs itself as “The Homework Manager for The Mac“, is built to do just that. Developed by a student who still lives the life, you can expect this application to be as useful as it should be.

You start the application by creating a new term; give name to it and set the time range of the term.

Then you gradually add your assignments, tasks and notes to it. You could choose to view all the items by list, week or month, iCal style.

Schoolhouse also has the ability to link documents and media to the assignments for quick reference, preview all your grades during the term to help you monitor your performance, and automatically publish the assignments to the web so that anyone can subscribe to them.

If it sounds confusing, don’t worry — to help users getting started, this app come with a short PDF manual.

Schoolhouse is like a GTD tool for students, but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be useful for non-student users. I find that this app is very useful to manage my writing projects.

2. Genius

One of the biggest traumas of school that still carved in my memory was studying for tests. I was always a “math kind of guy”, so memorizing too many facts and dates always scared me.

I wish I’ve encountered Genius back then. This small app will help anybody with their study skills, particularly how to memorize things easier.

You start with a new blank window. Then, by clicking the ‘+’ button, you can add a question. Insert the answer next to the question.

After all of the questions and answers have been inserted into the Genius window, you can save the window and start the learning process. Click the green “Study” button, and Genius will pop up a window with a question and the answer while dimming out the other parts of the screen. It will ask you to memorize them.

Genius then will ask the question again and you have to write the answer. It will alternate between new facts and questions. Genius organizes your information and carefully chooses questions using an intelligent “spaced repetition” method that’s based on your past performance.

You can use Genius to study foreign language phrases, vocabulary words, historical events, legal definitions, formal speeches, marketing points, religious texts, or anything else you need to memorize.

3. ProVoc

It’s always nice to learn a new language. But there’s one obstacle that usually stops almost everybody from learning any language: memorizing the vocabularies.

ProVoc is a free vocabulary trainer that makes learning a language easy. Just download the application and the vocabulary pack(s), and you are ready to go. There is a mountain of vocabulary packs available ranging from German to Dutch to Polish to Russian to Arabic.

ProVoc has the ability to export to an iPod, so you can learn while on the road. You can also print flash cards, use the free Dashboard Widget, and listen to the audio pronunciation of the words.

4. Buddi

The word “student” is often being related to “starving”. This might be an indication that most students are not good in managing their finance.

To help with the monetary side, students (and everybody else) can rely on Buddi, a simple and free, open-source money management application. Buddi is Java-based so it can run on any operating system with Java environment installed.

With the financial problem tackled with the help of Buddi, students can focus more on the study.

5. Carbon Copy Cloner

“The dog ate my paper” is a classic excuse for not turning in your assignment. Of course, no teacher will buy it anymore. The modern alternative is “My hard drive crashed and ate everything inside, including my assignment.” But that is also not selling well anymore because we have backup utilities.

Carbon Copy Cloner is one free and powerful alternatives. You can “clone” everything to an external hard drive.

6. Bonus tool: G.ho.st

G.ho.st is one of the online alternatives for backing up your files. You will get 15 Gigabytes of free online storage on the system (and another additional 5GB for every friend who signs up from your invitation).

But G.ho.st is not just about file backup. It is a complete virtual, online operating system. So you will also get an office suite, games, browser and everything that you can expect from an operating system. Why will you need this? Simple — you can access your work and files from any place on earth with just a computer and an internet connection.

One of the new features that I like most is the ability to “side-load” files from web location directly to G.ho.st online storage, and the ability to share them with your friends.

The above link will direct you to the G.ho.st page with me as the referrer. If you don’t feel like donating an additional 5 Gigabytes to me, you can go directly to their site.

So, you fancy yourself a writer, eh? You say you write for a living?

Then, why do you keep repeating the same words over and over again?

Well, lets put an end to that! Maybe we can help you improve your writing skills or at the very least show you a great new tool. A new website called www.VocabGrabber.com is a great tool to help you see the errors of your ways in writing. This fresh, new service allows you to enter a block of text into a box and hit a button that says Grab Vocabulary.

VocabGrabber analyzes your text and spits back a word cloud of terms used. From there, you can click on words and see synonyms as well as how many times you used a certain word.

You can click on words to see their relationship to other words. It is a great tool for any writer ““ even if you are a seasoned paid writer!

Check out the interface and we will walk you through how it can help you.

I grabbed the latest post from my personal website and pasted it into the box.

I hit the big green button and VocabGrabber instantly analyzed my text. It instantly (or at least it felt instant) spat back this word cloud.

The words that appear the most frequent have the largest font. From here, I changed the view into a list. This is easier for me to use. Below, you can see the button I clicked to show the list view ““ It is circled obnoxiously in red.

Ah now, I can see that the word backup was used 36 whopping times in that article. Maybe I should find another word to replace it with? VocabGrabber doesn’t tell you that but it will help you if that is what you decide. On the right hand side of the screen, you will see a chart with your word and other similar words around it. You will see a few definitions for your word as well as have the ability to click on a word and have it open in a seperate mini-java Visual Theasaurus. This is not a free product but they do let you try it out.

In this instance, the only relevant synonym is Computer Backup and well, that just doesn’t sound so much better. Let’s try another word. I decided to pick “label” as you can see below:

So in this case, it suggested several words that can replace the word “label” ““ mark, tag or description. This is very handy and I would have killed for this in high school! Do you have some type of free writing tool that you would like to share with us? Then do so in the comments!
