As the editor of several TV and movie-based websites, it often comes in handy to be able to grab images from video clips. Now of course there are many ways to do this (using VideoLan’s VLC Player is my favourite) but so far I’ve only found one method in which to grab tens, hundreds or even thousands of captures from a clip with a single mouse click. Fortunately, the results are spectacular.

As of 2012, there are a ton of media players available on the market, and many of them are free. With such a large selection, sometimes it can be hard to pick which software will suit you best. For media players, I have tried a bunch of them but ultimately settled on Media Player Classic – Home Cinema.

The Internet is becoming an increasingly important source for content of all media. There are legal and not-so-legal ways of listening to music, watching television and movies, playing games, and obtaining software. All via a simple broadband connection. You don’t even need a computer these days thanks to the range of devices which you can hook up to the Web in order to transform them from dumb to smart.

Boxee fans – it’s over. There may be more fun to have with the Boxee Box, but Boxee on the desktop isn’t coming back. It’s time to find something else if you have a computer hooked up to your television. We should have seen it coming. There was an entire year between updates for desktop users, during which things continued to break.

I first introduced the Plex media center app to you a few months ago as my Media Center app of choice, mainly because of it’s superb meta-data handling. The one major drawback was that the client software was not available for Windows which had just the server software. Plex have finally got around to releasing a Windows client, as well as streamlining their server offerings. Let’s take a look at at it all.

One of Apple’s biggest cons is their restrictions. True, their devices are amazing, superbly crafted and work like a charm, but why can’t they play more than one specific video format? Apple, in general, tend not to approve alternative players that allow you to play multiple formats. True, I can jailbreak my iPad and just get VLC, but are there any alternatives that don’t require jailbreaking?
