With Napster, WinMX, LimeWire, and Kazaa mostly in their graves (SoulSeek is still around, I guess), the world of filesharing has made a swift transition to torrents. Just like the good old Napster days though, public torrent sites and trackers are riddled with trojans and other garbage. The best way to enjoy your filesharing experience is getting an invite to one of the many (but few illustrious) private trackers.

While invite-only web is becoming a slight trend, I’m here to share three niche-specific and very reliable private sites that I use to get my complete media fix. Let’s get started.

PassThePopcorn

PTP has been around for quite a while, and through a legacy of staff drama and domain name changes, it still stands today as the best private torrent site for movies.

High-quality rips are added to PTP faster than almost anywhere else on the net, and speeds are generally top notch. PTP is at around 23,000 (of 25,000) users with a daily activity rate that hangs around 40%. Monthly, it’s at more than 90%. PTP is hanging right under the 100,000 total torrents mark. They’ve got over 53,000 individual movies, more than 80,000 subtitles, 533,000+ user ratings, 3.5 million total snatches, and a seeder/leecher ratio of 85.49. That’s impressive. The site is very smooth and easy to navigate, also.

As a little added bonus, PTP has some of the most active forums I’ve seen across private trackers. The community is very involved. This is where I go when I want movies. If you’re fortunate enough to be an active, invited member than you can tag along with me. My username there is Craig.

What.CD

What.CD is the premiere private tracker for music. Even their splash page is mysterious and makes you want to join up. Like PTP, What.CD has been going strong forever. The site has not changed much over the years, and that’s a good thing. It’s here to stay.

Here are the current stats that What.CD boasts:

Maximum Users: 200,000

Enabled Users: 147,441

Users active today: 31,864 (21.61%)

Users active this week: 75,651 (51.31%)

Users active this month: 120,045 (81.42%)

Torrents: 1,274,496

Releases: 588,517

Artists: 442,475

“Perfect” FLACs: 298,750

Requests: 158,012 (70.30% filled)

Snatches: 66,631,197

Peers: 8,836,049

Seeders: 8,687,317

Leechers: 148,732

Seeder/Leecher Ratio: 58.40

Those numbers are completely insane! If you’re an audiophile and love your FLACs, this is the place to be. I’ve never gone to What.CD and left without finding what I wanted. I’m CSS over at that tracker.

TvTorrents.COM

TvT is the up-and-comer of this list. It’s much different from PTP and What.CD. It doesn’t run on Project Gazelle like those two, the tracker software that What.CD made famous. The invitation and credits system is completely different also.

Again, just like the others, this is absolutely at the top of its class. Sometimes shows are uploaded as briefly as 15 minutes after their live airing. They’ve even got sections of the website that shows recently aired episodes of the most popular TV series’, complete with the matching user-contributed torrents (if there).

These guys are really doing it right, and their approach is definitely changing the way a lot of people watch “TV”. No more sitting and waiting, you don’t even have to set the TiVo. TvTorrents.com has everything you want, from Dexter to the most obscure foreign sitcoms. I’m over there too, self-named.

Now how do you get an invite to these awesome trackers? That’s on you. Just know that they are out there and hold all of your cravings and desires! In the event that you do get invited, you’ll want one of these clients to speed up your downloads. Might also want to check this article out too, it could save you some worry.

Don’t Forget: The Free A-Z Torent Guide

If you know any other quality sites, get at me in the comments. No begging for invites, either!

BitTorrent is still a reliable and pretty fast way to download large files. It might not be the best method out there, but sometimes it sure is the easiest. The clients are straightforward enough and the files are easy to come by. A while ago, we gave you a list of the best BitTorrent clients for Linux. You can also make use of our handy torrent guide.

Today, I will give you a list of the best Bit Torrent clients out there right now – each suited for somewhat different needs. However this list is not about the small technical aspects of each client, but is rather aimed at the average person who wishes to download files using BitTorrent.

Tixati [Windows & Linux]

Tixati is a fairly new BitTorrent client that would appeal to beginner and veteran torrent users alike. The interface is very slick and easy to use, and if you’re not sure what every little thing means, you can easily focus on what you know.

Tixati can supports magnet links, DHT and all the other usual things such as RSS. It’s highly customizable, with a wide array of bandwidth throttling options, different download and upload priorities and impressive control over user interface. With all those options in mind, Tixati is also aimed at beginners, and keeps prompting you with helpful messages and tips as well as the most important settings which you have to configure.

Deluge [Windows, Mac & Linux]

Deluge is a minimalist BitTorrent client with far less options than Tixati, but it will definitely appeal to those who simply want to download torrents and maybe glance at some statistics.

The interface is simple enough to use, although no helpful tips are provided for beginners. Deluge is a bit of a hefty download as it requires you to download and install the GTK+ runtime environment. If this is not a problem for you, Deluge offers all the usual basic features such as bandwidth throttling, and a set of plugins you can install to increase its functionality (RSS, for example, is supported only though a plugin).

Try this client if all you want to do is download, or if you’ve been around torrents for a while and don’t mind working a bit for customization.

Vuze [Windows, Mac & Linux]

If you’re looking for a bit torrent client that will download torrents and that’s it, please don’t try Vuze. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Vuze did something different than most other clients – they offer much, much more than just downloading torrents.

Vuze ia a Java application (decide for yourself whether this is a pro or a con) which you can use to do anything from playing HD media, to searching for files; from playing games to managing RSS subscriptions. It even integrates with your iTunes library. Too much? It might be, but if you’re looking for an all-around solution, Vuze is a terrific option. Despite all these features, the regular torrent options are still rather accessible.

Download Vuze if it seems just too good to be true. Beware of the third party software it offers on installation, though.

uTorrent [Windows, Mac & Linux]

It’s hard to compile a list like this without mentioning uTorrent. uTorrent is probably the best-known BitTorrent client, and it still works very well. But despite its name (micro), uTorrent doesn’t feel so tiny anymore. It seems to have gone though a bloating process in the past few years, and is now a full-blown BitTorrent client for the masses, complete with third-party programs you need to opt out from during installation.

These problems aside, it’s still a very good BitTorrent client which offers everything from DHT and magnet links to drag-and-drop interface for adding files. By way of helping newbies, uTorrent offers a Setup Guide which helps you test your network and configure it in order to get the best performance. This is pretty useful even if you already know what you’re doing. uTorrent also offers a rating system to help other users know which torrents are better than others.

If you think you can stomach the slight bloatedness of the client, be sure to give it a try.

Worth Mentioning: BitTorrent [Windows & Mac]

This is not really another client, as BitTorrent and uTorrent are pretty much the same thing nowadays. Take uTorrent, change the main color from green to purple and jiggle the UI around a bit, and you get BitTorrent.

BitTorrent actually feels a bit less bloated, and offers about the same features as uTorrent does. The UI is cleaner, with less options in it, which could be a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it. BitTorrent is also not available for Linux (as far as I could see), which could be somewhat of a deal breaker for Linux users.

Bottom Line

I’m always in search for a balance between functionality and minimalism. When it comes to Bit Torrent clients, Tixati is the surprising winner for me. It has all the option an average person could want, but still feels lightweight enough and easy to understand.

Which client do you use? Have any recommendations for clients we missed? Share in the comments.

Torrents have become quite an interesting invention over the last few years, even though the technology has now existed for quite a while. Back in the day, using torrents was still a little tricky, as Internet connections weren’t as fast as they are today, and torrent clients weren’t as advanced or as easy to use. Specifically, and I remember this problem very well, you’d have a tough time getting some decent download rates if you didn’t have a port specified in the settings that was actually open or forwarded to your computer, if you were behind a router. However, the clients have now matured in a way where you just need to open the .torrent file, accept the torrent into the program, and wait.

The most popular torrent client, uTorrent, has been getting a lot of extra effort put into it to simplify its use while expanding its feature set. I must say that the uTorrent developers have done an excellent job to do all of this while still keeping the program lightweight. One of the newer features that you’ll find is called add-ons.

µMap

µMap is one of my favorite addons. To me it’s always been quite interesting to see where certain peers are located. There are a couple of different ways to view these maps, and you can organize them by client type, country of origin, or swarm. This way you can easily identify any trends that may be interesting to you.

This app can also show you how closely it can identify your location as well. If µMap can find you within a smaller area than you’d like, you can try to use a free VPN service to mask your actual location.

uChat

uChat lets you chat with other people who are currently downloading the same torrent as you are. This could be a great way to kill some time while your torrent is downloading. You could also find a new online friend who shares similar interests with you, or you could learn about other torrents that you might be interested in. You’re not automatically signed into uChat when you download torrents, so you won’t be disturbed when you don’t want to be.

Skins

If you can already customize your uTorrent client with apps, why not change some visuals as well? With Skins you can easily do that! You can choose from a number of skins by simple browsing or searching via keywords. If you’re a little artsy you can even create a skin yourself.

4. Tetronimoes

So you’ve just added a new torrent to your client (such as a nice DVD collection of your favorite Linux distribution), and have nothing better to do other than to simply sit there and wait. Socializing with strangers might not be something you’d like to do either. After all, you can’t browse the web or you’ll use up bandwidth that could go to the torrent. Instead, you can go ahead and play some Tetris thanks to the Tetronimoes app. Now you can play a classic, lightweight game, and in no time at all you’ll see your torrent completely downloaded.

5. Khan Academy

As a student, I find this app to be very valuable. Khan Academy offers various different college courses whose class videos can be downloaded via torrent. This can be a great advantage to anyone who wants to catch up, get ahead, and simply learn something new that could be beneficial to their work or other activity. Don’t forget to allow some space on your hard drive for this. Khan Academy offers plenty of classes, and you should expect one class worth of videos to take around 2.5GB.

These are the top 5 apps that I personally recommend. Of course, you are never obligated to completely agree with this list, so it’s always best to browse through all the available apps in your uTorrent client. You could also check out this list of other apps. Personalization is always the best feature you can get out of a well-designed program. Also, don’t forget that uTorrent is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, so everyone can enjoy them.

Is there an app that you believe should’ve been on the top 5 list? Which app would it be and why do you think so? Let us know in the comments!

With µTorrent 3 and the new remote function all you need to do is set a username and password. We’ve taught you how to set up a PC as a remotely controlled torrent box before, and that guide still works to this day if you want to manage torrents inside your home network. For accessing your torrents away from home, however, things got complicated; you needed a static IP or DynDNS in order to connect from outside of your home network.

Geeks have no problem with this of course, but it’s not something everyone wants to spend time setting up. Happily it is no longer necessary with µTorrent 3, which offers an extremely simple way to manage your torrents remotely. Whether you want to simply add a torrent to your download queue, manage which files are downloaded within a particular torrent or even change your client settings, µTorrent Remote gives you full access to µTorrent from anywhere.

Getting Set Up

The first thing you need to do, if you haven’t done it yet, is install µTorrent 3 - find the download here. Downloads are available for Windows and Mac. Once you’ve got your new version of µTorrent up and running you’ll notice a new button on the menu bar. Click it:

Doing so will quickly take you to the “Remote” section in µTorrent’s preferences. Now you need only add a username and password:

You should see “Status:Accessible” under these boxes shortly after you fill them in. If not, try another username/password combination. When you do see “Status:Accessible” you’re done.

Yep, that was it.

Web Interface

Ready to check out the web interface? Simply head to remote.µTorrent.com. You’ll need to move your mouse around to help encrypt the communications, then you can enter your username and password. Should all go well you’ll then be looking at the web interface of µTorrent:

Everything you can do in µTorrent itself you can do here, it seems, from managing your torrents to changing your download settings.

This isn’t a dumbed-down version of µTorrent for the web; everything is here, and it’s all very easy to find if you’re familiar with µTorrent’s interface already. I was able to add an RSS feed, set certain files not to download within a torrent and cap the total amount of bandwidth used by all downloads.

Privacy

So what are the privacy implications of logging into your torrent client over the web? Many are concerned with this, but it seems to me that the µTorrent team spent a lot of time making this secure. Read their privacy FAQ here for more information.

Conclusion

I’m not sure how often I’ll be logging into µTorrent to manage my downloads; I’ve been using Dropbox to start torrent downloads for a long time and don’t usually need more than that. Still, it’s nice to have the option to log in without the need to configure my network settings.

Do you see yourself using µTorrent’s remote function often? Let us know in the comments below, along with any other tips for achieving the same thing.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/featured-speed.jpg">For many people, the distributed peer-to-peer download power of torrents isn’t all it’s made out to be. If you’re feeling drowned in fake files, choking from ISP speed throttling, and sick of being told you’re unconnectable – this guide is for you. We’ll have your torrent downloads in tip-top shape in no time. Note, I’m not touching on security here. If you’re paranoid about your ISP or the RIAA, your only solution is to run everything you do through a VPN and be done with it. If you follow everything I show you here, your torrent overview screen should soon be capable of looking like this:

Open Those Ports!

Your first step how to speed up torrent downloads is to ensure you can actually be connected to from other peers. The latest version of uTorrent is able to test this for you, so launch the Setup Guide from the Options menu. If you have an older uTorrent, you can test specific ports using this tool.

By default, uTorrent will attempt to auto-configure your router using uPnP, which solves so many problems. If your router isn’t compatible, this will fail – but you can perform the following steps to forward the ports correctly.

Open up a command prompt from Windows, and type ipconfig. Find the IPv4 address of the form 192.168.x.x and note it down.

Open up uTorrent Options-> Preferences -> Connection , and choose your own port or note down the one it has chosen for you. Make sure “randomise port each start” is not checked.

Open up your router config page and look for PORT FORWARDING. Yours may be different, but they are all basically similar. Name the forwarding rule, add the first and last port you want forwarded (just enter the same value in this case), and the IP address or the machine you want forwarded to.

Note that if your network is running an automatic addressing scheme, you may need to reconfigure this if you shut down and are given a new address. You can read my previous tutorial here on how to reserve a permanent IP address from your router.

Be sure to re-test when you’re done, though you may need to restart your router.

ISP Throttling & Traffic Shaping

Assuming you’ve gone through all the other steps in this guide and your torrents are still slow, then it’s quite possible that your ISP is shaping your traffic somehow.

This tool from Glasnost can help you tell if your ISP is throttling your speed and specifically tests torrent protocol.

If you find you’re being restricted, you have two possible courses of action. The first is to switch your ISP to one less draconic. In the UK at least, I know Virgin Media are very open about their traffic policies, and do perform some outright speed restrictions (not just on your torrent traffic) if your download/upload goes beyond a certain point during peak times. In general though, they have the least restrictive of any UK ISP.

Your second option is to use a VPN to encrypt your traffic, making it impossible for your ISP to inspect what you are actually doing. Bear in mind this only works if they are “shaping” your traffic for specific protocols, rather than placing general restrictions on the total amount of traffic you can use. We covered some free solutions before, and you can read a complete explanation of what a VPN is here – but when choosing a service for you it’s important to note that most VPN services explicitly DON’T allow torrent traffic, and certainly not any that are free. The best two paid services I know of that do allow unlimited torrent traffic are vpntunnel.se and torrentsecurity.com

Enable DHT Or Join A Private Tracker

I extolled the virtues of private trackers with their ridiculously fast download speeds and high quality torrents last week in my 9 Easy Ways To Never Get A Virus article, but be aware that private trackers generally don’t allow peer exchange and DHT to be enabled because it prevents the system from counting your ratio correctly, effectively letting certain users “cheat”. So personally, I would recommend you DISABLE DHT and join a good private tracker or two, but if you can’t find your way into one…

Make sure DHT and peer exchange is enabled from the connections screen. This will have the fortunate side effect of meaning you can still find peers even when the tracker is down.

Windows Firewall

Make sure the firewall exception is on, or turn off the Windows firewall entirely. Again, do this from the connections screen of uTorrent options if you wish to add an exception.

In my opinion it’s another of those unnecessary security precautions like anti-virus that ends up causing far more problems that it’s worth. To turn off the firewall completely, click Start and type “firewall“. Open the first option in the Control Panel results, and you’ll see a link on the sidebar to completely disable it.

Don’t Be A Leech

If you set your torrent client to severely restrict the amount of uploading it can do, and basically just leech the files, most private trackers will restrict the amount you can download too. Make sure you are fully able and willing to give back to the community.

Conclusion

What kind of speeds do you get for torrents, and is that your ISPs fault? Do you have a restrictive ISP and would like to shame them in the comments? Do you still use public trackers? Go ahead and tell the world in the comments! Alternatively, ask for ISP specific advice in the ever growing tech questions community we have here at MakeUseOf.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/00_uTorrent_Apps.jpg">No one will argue that the most popular BitTorrent client (at least under Windows) is uTorrent. It’s small, it’s fast, and it’s also free. You can’t get any better combination than that, could you?

It turns out that you can. The developer of uTorrent is trying to improve the user experience by opening up the app to uTorrent extensions. If you’ve upgraded your uTorrent to the latest version (Windows version only), you will see the new menu called “Apps” which contains the ingredients to make your favorite BitTorrent client much more powerful.

Let’s Start With The Skins

uTorrent apps are HTML and Javascript compilations which are specifically built to run from within uTorrent. The concept of uTorrent apps is similar to browser extensions: to add more functionalities to the main software while still giving users full control on what functionalities they want to add.

To start using uTorrent apps, click on the “Apps” menu on the left pane of the uTorrent window. You will see a list of available apps. At the time of writing there are already seventeen apps in the repository, and the developer has promised that more are on the way. To add one of the apps functionality to uTorrent, click the “Install” button. You can also download the apps from the uTorrent Apps website in the form of “.btapp” files.

The first app that I chose to install was skins. This app will give users the ability to change the look of uTorrent’s interface. I clicked on “Skins” on the Apps’ page and arrived on the information page. Then I clicked the “Install” button to download and install the app.

The “Skins” menu appeared under the “Apps“. This menu will allow you to choose and install new skins under the “Browse Skins” tab and switch among the installed skins under the “Recent Skins” tab. Apply the skin that you want by clicking on the “Install” button inside the image box.

You can go back to the “Default Skin” easily by clicking the respective button, or you can also try to create your own skin using the “Create a Skin” button.

This is how uTorrent will look with one of the customized skins.

And this one is how it will look under the default skin.

The Other Apps

There are many other available apps inside the repository. Let’s take a look at some of them.

The second app from the list that caught my attention is VLC. Everybody knows VLC as a stand alone all-you-can-play media player. This VLC uTorrent app will display all the media that you downloaded using uTorrent, and you can easily select and play one of them using VLC in just one click.

If you want to skip the information screen, you can just press the “Install” button on the repository page and uTorrent will download and install the app.

This is how the VLC app menu will look : a list of downloaded videos and music and a play button. To play a media file, just select one from the list and click “Play“.

If you love movies, you might want to also try VODO. Each month, this app will feature one movie that can be legally downloaded for free. The movies are provided by “creators who believe in the power of peer-to-peer distribution “. However, you are encouraged to donate straight to the creators to support them.

After installing, VODO will display the “movie of the month” download page, and a list of other freely available movies.

Other apps that you might want to try are:

uMap: which will visualize the location of all the peers where you leech the file from.

uBrowse: a file search utility that will help you locate the files that you have downloaded.

Torrent Tweet: which will show you tweets about the torrent that you downloaded from others who have downloaded the same file. If you have a Twitter account, you can also contribute to the conversation.

There are also games that you can play from within uTorrent, like Raptr, Outspark, and Tetronimoes. You can use these games to waste your time while waiting for your download to finish. You can browse the repository page for other available apps.

Uninstalling Apps

If – after trying out an app – you decide that you don’t want to use it, you can uninstall the app easily by right-clicking on the item under the Apps menu and choosing “Uninstall App” from the pop-up menu.

You will get a confirmation window, asking you whether you really want to uninstall the app and reassuring you that none of your downloads will be interrupted nor removed. Click “Yes” to continue with the uninstallation.

As these apps are still in the very early stages, we will still have to wait and see whether additional functionalities from uTorrent apps will be as successful as browser extensions. Personally, I found that they are useful. All the apps that I tried worked as promised, except for Raptr – which is supposed to be a game repository but still doesn’t have any games inside its list.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/torrentbox5.jpg">Chances are if you’re reading this article you’re the type with an attic full of silicone chips, sticks of RAM and old bits of printer. I’d hazard a guess and say you’ve got more spare tech equipment up there than Christmas decorations, and it’s time to revolutionize your filesharing with a torrent box.

Put simply a torrent box allows you to queue, manage and share all your torrent data via a network connection. You can leave this old PC in the corner, silently chipping away at your downloads and seeding like a trooper whilst you take your laptop out and about for more practical reasons. You won’t need a monitor once you’ve set up the box, which means you can put it anywhere it will fit.

Setting Up

It’s always best to start with a fresh operating system, so format and re-install your chosen OS on the PC’s hard drive. As we’ll be using uTorrent to administer everything remotely, you’ll need a copy of Windows 2000 or above. If you’ve never installed your particular copy of Windows on this machine before, you may need to call Microsoft to validate your key with use on your new (old) machine.

Don’t forget that system requirements for Microsoft Windows XP are very low by today’s standards ““ a Pentium 233 MHz with 64 MB of RAM may sound a little choppy, but will function fine. As you’re going to be using the machine to store data, you’ll need a fairly large hard drive depending on your plans.

If you’d like to use the box as a share for all members of your household, the more storage you’ve got the better. However if you’re using the box as a go-between, before transferring your downloads to shares or backup locations, then space is not so much of an issue. External hard drives can make for easy space upgrades, and provides a very mobile solution when transferring data, though be sure to update any older copies of Windows for USB 2.0 compatibility.

It’s important to remember to format the drive on which you will be downloading your torrent data to NTFS, and not the older FAT32 file system. NTFS will allow you to download files greater than 4GB, a constraint when using FAT32 devices.

Make sure you have at least one shared and accessible location from which to access the data. Simply create a folder on your main download drive, right click and choose Share. This is where all your downloaded data will go. It’s best to test this on another machine within your network first, just in case. If you make this share writeable, you’ll be able to add your own data to the drive and share it straight from the box itself.

Installing uTorrent & The Web UI

The latest version of uTorrent comes with everything you need to configure remote access. Simply download and install it from the official download page, and boot it up. You may want to adjust a few settings, including your connection settings for optimal download and upload performance. Check out this guide to speeding up your torrents for a few tricks you might not have thought of.

Hit Ctrl+P to bring up the Preferences dialog, and within the General tab check Start uTorrent on System Startup. This means if you ever need to restart or move your box you can resume your torrents by simply turning it on. Under Web UI, check Enable Web UI and create a username and password.

You can also specify an Alternative listening port for connecting to your remote interface. If you have trouble remembering your connection port under the Connection tab, stick in some numbers you’re bound to remember.

That’s it, you’re good to go. Now for the easy bit!

Remote Access

Make sure your torrent box is turned on, connected to the network and running uTorrent. Using any machine on your network visit http://192.168.0.x:port/gui/ from a web browser, where x is the computer’s location on the network and port is either your uTorrent client’s connection port or alternative listening port.

To find out your computer’s location on the network, log into your router and check the attached devices, or you can just use a process of elimination! If all goes well you will be prompted for the username and password you created under uTorrent’s Web UI preferences.

Log in and you will be presented with uTorrent’s web user interface. From here you can add, remove and manage your torrents, as well as update your preferences. It’s quite literally uTorrent, within your web browser.

Accessing your Web UI is all well and good on your network, but what about when you’re not at home?

Well if you have a static IP ““ no problem, simply visit http://yourip:port/gui/. You can get your IP from What Is My IP on your home network. If your internet service provider rotates your IP then you can use a service such as DynDNS which provides you with a domain name for your home network. There is an excellent guide about doing this here.

Conclusion

I’m always searching for new ways to use old technology, and a torrent box fits my needs and costs nothing to set up. If you’ve already got an existing media centre or file server, adding torrent functionality is another simple step you can take to streamline your home setup. Remote access gives you the freedom to peruse from afar and have your downloads ready for you and the rest of your network the second you get home.

Seriously, everywhere you look, applications and games alike are all adding support for upgrades, add-ons, plug-ins and extensions. Whatever you want it, I like it.

The industry is slowly coming to terms with the fact that one size doesn’t fit all, and allowing the consumer to pimp their individual user experiences.

Why shouldn’t it? With decent implementation, the base applications in question remain as fast, functional and easy to use as ever before. There’s no must in the equation. Only opportunity.

uTorrent :: Project Griffin (Alpha)

With its latest alpha release, uTorrent has added support for so called third-party ‘apps’, comparable to Firefox’s add-ons, or Chrome’s extensions.

First of all, the Alpha release of Project Griffin is only available for Windows. Secondly, it’s in Alpha, which means it’s considerably more unstable than even a Beta. This means that you can still expect some rough edges and application crashes before it rolls as smooth as a release version. The Alpha can already be downloaded for those bleeding-edge feature-junkies amongst you.

The uTorrent extensions use a web-based framework, which consists only of HTML and Javascript. Essentially, aside from the technical details, this means that uTorrent won’t be paying for the upcoming extensions in size or speed. It will remain the feather-light and lightning-fast BitTorrent client we have all come to enjoy.

The developer API is still to be released, so right now, there are four uTorrent extensions available – discussed below. It goes without saying that these are for demonstration and testing purposes, albeit adding interesting features to the application.

Virus Guard

This might seem like an odd choice, since most people have a virus scanner on their computer already. Sadly, though, the need to surveil an entire computer clogs up a considerable amount of memory. Whether you only want to put a guard at the weakest gate, or add an extra layer of security, Virus Guard comes to the rescue.

The extension is powered by BitDefender, a considerable player in the anti-virus community, and can be used one of two ways. Scan All, depicted above, will take a thorough look through your entire torrent libraries, and attempt to spot any irregularities. Additionally, you can right-click any individual torrent and let the Virus Guard inspect it.

Raptr Free Games

The Raptr uTorrent extension takes another route – that of free games. No, the extension won’t integrate MiniClip or Kongregate in your Torrenting application, luckily, but offers you a repository of the top freeware games, much like those we sometimes discuss at MakeUseOf.

Simply select one of the games from the list, review the description, file size and rating, and start downloading it with the click of a button. Each and every one of those game downloads will fire up a torrent in the main uTorrent panel. Simple as that.

VODO

VODO can be compared to Raptr, but for indie short films instead of games. Again, you can browse the titles as if you were simply using a web-browser, viewing individual film descriptions and comments.

Those film downloads will be launched as torrents as well, and are sometimes available in both a standard definition, and high definition flavor.

µGadget

µGadget is the only uTorrent extension that specifically focuses on uTorrent, and quite frankly, the only extension I advise against installing. Here’s why.

Although it’s advertised as bringing browser support to uTorrent, it does so much more. And not in a good way. In essence, µGadget is an Ask.com toolbar with a little bit of uTorrent control. As you can see below, the majority of the toolbar is cluttered with the usual unnecessary superfluidity.

Only when you press the uTorrent icon, limited controls come into sight. If you don’t mind the Ask.com toolbar, µGadget does its job perfectly. However, it’s probably still easier to just open the uTorrent client if you suddenly change your mind about a download.

What do you think? Will uTorrent be needlessly cluttered by these apps, or do you see the windows of opportunity opening wide? Let us know your opinion in the comments section below!

By now, most MakeUseOf readers should know all about BitTorrent, the most popular peer-to-peer technology on the web. We’ve talked about the protocol more than once, and even released the Big Book of BitTorrent“”a great place to start if you find BitTorrent too confusing for your use.

There are thousands of BitTorrent clients on the market; that is, thousands of applications you can use to download files using BitTorrent technology. If you’re curious which BitTorrent program is the best, everyone has their own favorite – but today, we’re going to profile what I believe is an underappreciated piece of software: Deluge.

This is a program that, at first glance, doesn’t seem too different from others out there, but offers quite a bit for those looking to access their torrents across their home network. Best of all: it works on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux, so no one is left out of this post. Let’s check it out.

The Basics

Like I said: on its surface, Deluge appears to be just like any other BitTorrent client. And if that’s all you want to use it for, that’s all it is.

You’ll find all the features that made clients like Transmission and uTorrent great. You can download torrents, select which files you want to download within that torrent, set certain files as top-priority and configure your overall bandwidth usage. There are even a variety of plugins you can install to add functionality like reading RSS feeds (useful if you want to automatically download TV shows).

Add to all this the ability to encrypt your downloads, and the fact that it runs on all three major platforms, and you’ve already got a winning BitTorrent client. But all this just brings Deluge up-to-par with other BitTorrent clients on the market. What really gives Deluge an edge over its competition is its daemon/client model of doing things.

Daemon!

A daemon, for those who don’t know, is a program that runs in the background of your computer without a visible user interface. Such programs can usually be controlled by a graphical user interface, but do not require that interface in order to operate. The advantage here is that the program in question can be controlled by more than one client (a word used in this case to describe user-interfaces) as well as over the network. In the case of Deluge, there are three main interfaces: the standard graphical interface, a web-based interface you can access from your browser and a console-based interface that works by typing commands.

Why would you want an alternative interface? I’m glad you asked. Let’s explore the two alternatives interfaces Deluge offers and why you might want to use them.

Web Interface

It’s not hard to see the appeal here: it’s Deluge, in your browser. This interface can do practically everything Deluge’s primary interface can do, over the network, and works on any computer with a browser. This means you can check the status of the downloads happening on your desktop or media-center from the comfort of your laptop””without interrupting whoever may be using either of those computers.

To get this working outside of your home network, you’re going to need either a static IP address or to make use of a service such as DynDNS, which gives you a URL you can use to access your network anytime. Expect an article by me on using DynDNS in the weeks to come for more information.

Console Interface

If you like typing commands better than you like clicking things, you’re weird. Or at least, I’m sure that’s what our commenters will say.

Except now that I’ve said that, the commenters will be mad at me for implying using the console is weird.

For the record: I’m weird, and love the fact that Deluge comes with a console interface. Typing commands isn’t always the fastest way to accomplish things, but long-time console-users know the efficiency of the command line is not to be overlooked.

Deluge is no exception. Adding a torrent is as easy as typing “add” followed by the URL of the torrent, meaning I need only copy-and-paste the URL to start the download. If I want to pause my torrents, I need only type “pause.” If I want to see what’s happening with all my torrents, I need only type “info.”

You get there idea: play with this interface and I’ll be you’ll come to think of a few uses for it.

Best of all, a completely console-based interface means you can use SSH to access your torrents. This is a great way to securely check your downloads from work.

Thin Client

These interfaces are cool, but there’s something to be said about using the default interface to get your work done. Happily, you can set up that interface to control another computer’s instance of Deluge over the network: check out Deluge’s own instructions here.

Conclusion

Deluge is a feature-rich torrent client that runs on Linux, Windows and Mac–and it features a well-executed daemon-client model to boot. What’s not to love?

For me, not much. I’ve made Deluge my BitTorrent tracker of choice, and don’t expect to be looking back anytime soon. Download Deluge and try it out for yourself.

What about you? What do you think of Deluge? Do you have your own favorite BitTorrent tracker, and if so what features do you like? You’re always welcome to share your views in the comments below.

For a long time now, I’ve been searching for a way to start a torrent download from a remote location. And since I’m on the road most of the day, Transmission’s WebUI isn’t any good to me. I couldn’t be bothered to set it up anyway, it would involve having a fixed IP address or DynDNS — too much hassle to being with. What I actually needed was a simple way to download a torrent on my iPhone and send it to my Mac running at home.

When I realised that the iPhone didn’t support downloading files natively, I was back to square one. Then I thought of using Dropbox — but that didn’t work. After a couple of hours of research, I finally found a solution, albeit a pretty rudimentary one. It involves a secondary email, Mail rules, Transmission or uTorrent and Applescript. Now, let’s be clear on this: I’m not a scripting geek. I’m just an average Mac user. But the fact that I actually wrote this script is a clear testament to how easy it is to learn the Applescript language. I digressed.

Here’s how I managed to set up Mail and Transmission to automatically download torrents sent via email.

First of all, we need to write the script. But since this is MakeUseOf, I’ve already written it for you. Download the appropriate version depending on which torrent client you use.

Download Applescript: Transmission via email

Download Applescript: uTorrent via email

Unzip the file and store the script somewhere safe, for example within the scripts folder located at /Library/Scripts/.

If you prefer to compile the script yourself, here’s how it looks like:

(*Transmission via email by Jackson Chung*)

using terms from application “Mail”
on perform mail action with messages theMessages for rule Torrent
tell application “Mail”
repeat with theMessage in theMessages
set theText to content of theMessage
set the clipboard to (theText)
end repeat
end tell

 tell application “Transmission” to activate
tell application “System Events”
tell process “Transmission”
keystroke “u” using {command down}

 keystroke (theText)
key code 36
end tell

 end tell
end perform mail action with messages
end using terms from

Before we proceed, let me explain that we are going to set a rule to detect torrents sent from a primary email to a secondary email. So in this case, you’ll need to 2 separate email accounts.

Now launch Mail (assuming you inherently use Mail; if not, you’re out of luck) and enter its Preferences. Click on the Rules tab and add a new rule. Name it “Torrent“, then set the condition to “all”, as in “If all of the following conditions are met”. Next, set the rule conditions as you see in the screenshot below:

From – is equal to – your@emailaddress.com
Subject – is equal to – Download torrent

Perform the following actions:

Mark as Read
Run Applescript – Click the choose button and locate the Applescript you’ve just downloaded

Click on OK and click on “Don’t Apply” if asked Do you want to apply your rules to messages in selected mailboxes?

Mail is now set. For every email from your@emailaddress.com with the subject “Download torrent”, it will trigger the Applescript. Perfect, just what we want.

Now, let’s set Transmission. Enter its Preferences and check the box for “Start transfers when added” and make sure to uncheck “Display “adding transfer” options window”. We want Transmission to automatically start torrents without intervention. OK, Transmission is now set as well.

uTorrent’s default settings will do just fine.

Now then comes the interesting part. How do we format the email? It’s pretty simple. The Applescript is set to copy the content of the message so all you need to add is the URL to the torrent. Remove your email signature or it won’t work. From my iPhone, all I do is hold down on a link until the contextual menu appears. I tap on Copy and launch Mail on my iPhone.

Select the appropriate mailbox corresponding to your@emailaddress.com and compose a new message to your secondary email account my@emailaddress.com. Enter the subject line: Download torrent — remember that’s one of the triggers.

Then paste the torrent URL into the content of the message and remove everything else i.e. signatures, etc. Click Send and watch the magic happen.

As soon as your Mac receives the email, it will:

*Mark it as read;
*Start the Applescript which then;
*Launches Transmission or uTorrent;
*Opens a torrent location from a URL;
*Enters the URL into the field and clicks OK;
*Starts downloading the torrent.

Since all of the magic happens from within your Mac, it doesn’t really matter how you send the email. Happily, you can do this from any mobile phone with internet connectivity, or from a browser. I hope you’ll find this “hack” useful.

This is my last post of the year before I take a short break from writing. I wish all MakeUseOf readers a Happy New Year!
