The point is, Twitter can be quite the tool to get your proverbial head around. When things are tough, it’s nice to have a little help. It’s for that reason that a blog like Twitip.com comes in handy. Twitip.com shares tips about how to Twitter. In fact, that’s what the name means: Twit-tip.

There are 7 topics of Twitter tips Twitip.com covers.

(1) Twitter for beginners

Twitip.com has help for the beginner Twitter user just learning how to Twitter. First of all, if you check out the bottom of the page, you’ll find a list of posts written specifically to help someone starting out.

There’s also a whole category of posts directed towards the beginner. Some good posts from this category are the:

- Concise Guide to Understanding Replies, Mentions and Direct Messages on Twitter – Part 1 and Part 2
- How to Get Noticed on Twitter.

(2) How to get Twitter followers

One of the difficult parts of getting going with Twitter is building a following. It would be nice if we had more than our parents and best friend following us. One of the reasons for using Twitter is to be heard, right? With posts like

- How to Grow an Interested Following on Twitter using RSS,
- 6 “REAL” Reasons Why Followers Follow,
- Get More Followers by Spending Less Time on Twitter

we can get a little bit of help.

(3) Twitter tools

As you know from reading MakeUseOf, there are many tools being developed to make Twitter a better, more productive tool:

Three More Great Twitter Tools Worth A Look

Twitter Tweaks: 5 Tools To Make You An Elite Tweep

Hoot! An In-Depth Look At Online Twitter Client – HootSuite

Learn How to Schedule Future Tweets With Taweet

Well, there just so happens to be a category on Twitip.com covering Twitter tools too. Sometimes it’s interesting to hear different voices, ideas and opinions on the same subject. Check out Tweepi – Twitter Follow Management With Stats and How To Use CoTweet To Join The Conversation.

(4) General Twitter tips

It’s great to get tips from people who have experience! If we can find anything good to learn about how to use Twitter, it could be found in the Tips category. Check these tips out: When NOT to Tweet, Twitter – The Art of Influence, and Get More Mileage Out of Your Blog Archives with Twitter Teasers

(5) Twitter for business

Businesses are getting into Twitter BIG time! There are several businesses I follow just so I can keep up with new developments. Businesses use Twitter in several ways, one of which is to build a brand. Apparently you can also use Twitter to find a job! Who knew?

(6) Twitter Users

Twitip.com also has a whole category about how to find out WHO to follow. Are you new to Twitter and you don’t know who to follow? Find out who’s who and how to find the people YOU would want to listen to. Try these posts: The Top 12 Unique Causes to Follow on Twitter, Moms: The Spiders on the Social Media Web, and Twitter: The Real-Time Answer Engine.

(7) Twitter news

This category is all about news about Twitter. For instance, since Twitter released its “List” feature, there’s been some buzz about it. Check out these 2 articles talking about it: Twitter Lists In Detail or, “Yo Dawg, I Heard U Like Lists!” and 8 Things to Consider Before Using Twitter Lists.

If you like to read blogs (and hopefully you do because MakeUseOf is an awesome one!) and you want some help with Twitter, you really need to check out Twitip.com. It’s a blog that is offering help!

If you haven’t heard, Wordpress is like the best blogging software, like, EVER! If you want to do it the easy way, you can always start a blog by going to Wordpress.com and signing up. Easy-peasy!

The other option is actually purchasing web-space (don’t care what some people say, paying for webspace is the way to go), installing Wordpress in the purchased web space, and setting up your “self-hosted” Wordpress blog.

Either way you choose to go, if you are new to blogging AND Wordpress, you have some things to learn before getting too far. For instance, what are widgets? Sidebars? Headers and footers? For veteran bloggers, these terms are second nature but for a newbie (please don’t be offended at the term), they have to learn.

Enter video WordPress tutorials! I love being able to help people get started with new technology. I just recently helped out a few friends with Wordpress sites and it was a blast. I did a video tutorial or two but what I found out was that much of my work wasn’t really needed! When I ran into Wordpress.tv, a site with some of the best WordPress tutorials out there, I almost fell over!

Wordpress.tv is a very well-done site full of tutorials showing you how to do everything from managing widgets to adding Twitter updates to your sidebar to adding a Paypal button to you blog! Now if I want to show someone how to do something, I can either record a screencast for them and figure out how to share it with them OR I can head over to Wordpress.tv and see if it’s something that’s already covered, saving me much time and effort!

Here are a few of the best Wordpress tutorials that may someday help you help someone else getting started with Wordpress:

How to sign up at Wordpress.com…

An introduction to the dashboard…

How to create a static page…

How to write and publish a post…

As you can see, Wordpress.tv has a wealth of well-done video WordPress tutorials to surf through. What I like about the video tutorials is how professional they are, the high video quality, and the very smooth voice integrated into each tutorial. Also notice that it is easy to turn subtitles on and off (good for those who are hearing impaired). ALSO, it’s very easy to embed and share the videos (very cool for reviewing and sharing them on sites like MakeUseOf.com!).

What I didn’t mention before is that Wordpess.tv also has a whole section dedicated to presentations done on various Wordpress-related topics from tips to the future of the Internet and the part Wordpress is playing. Here’s a small selection of the presentations you’ll find:

Chris Molitor on Finding the Perfect Theme for You or Your Business…

Martin Buckley on Self-Hosting Multiple WordPress Blogs (technologically sophisticated)…

Mark Jaquith on BuddyPress and the Future of WordPress Plugins…

The site is fairly simple to navigate. If you look across the top you’ll see links to the two basic categories of videos (Wordcamp TV and How-To). Notice that you can also search Wordpress.tv for a specific topic you may be looking for.

Once you’ve arrived at either location, the easiest thing to do browse the category column off to the left (once you scroll past the intro spot at the top with some featured videos).

Once you’ve arrived at a specific category, you are then offered a listing of videos to choose from.

It’s really that easy. As you’ll be able to tell when you browse the site, they have tutorials for novices and the more experienced. I think you’ll be pleased by what you find at Wordpress.tv.

Tell us, what other sources do you know of that offer good Wordpress tutorials? Please share them in the comments!

Satellite Internet service appears to be becoming more and more popular. Once the exclusive domain of exploration companies and war journalists, there are now thousands of people with an extra dish on the home or RV. Part of the reason for this is that certain technologies have increased the bandwidth and decreased the cost.

Now, there are geostationary satellites. That’s a fancy word for saying the satellite stays still in relation to your position on Earth. You have to set the dish up just once and, barring windstorms or worse, the dish stays in constant communication with the satellite.

The latest way to communicate with satellites for Internet service is over something called the Ka band (pronounced kay-eh). The Ka band is a set of frequencies that are between 18.3 GHz and 31 GHz. More specifically, the uplink (that part of the call that is going from your home to the satellite) is in the range of 27.5 GHz and 31 GHz. The downlink (that part of the call that is coming from the satellite to your home) is in the range of 18.3 Ghz and 20.2 Ghz.

What the heck is a GHz? Giga Hertz. Giga for a 1,000,000,000, and Hertz for a cycle per second. Picture a wave on the ocean. It has two parts, the crest of the wave that comes high out of the water. Then there is the trough of the wave, which goes below the normal waterline. Now picture a cot and some Bud Light Lime….mmmmm. Okay back to school.

When the crest AND the trough are done passing over the same point in the water, that can be thought of as one cycle. Now imagine that happening in just one second. That’s a Hertz. Now imagine that happening a thousand times in one second! That’s a megahertz. Now imagine that happening 1,000,000,000 times in a second! That’s a gigahertz. My brain hertz.

See the similarities?

Why do you need to know this? Well, those numbers relate to transmitting power and what the signal can carry for information. Just like in my first Technology Explained article, the lower frequencies transmit longer distances with less power, but aren’t capable of carrying a lot of information. That’s why the old 900Mhz phones don’t have the voice quality of the 2.6Ghz phones. Yet you could take those old phones down the block with you.

So, using the higher frequency ranges for satellite Internet allows for more data to be sent, giving us something close to high-speed Internet even if we’re an Alaskan recluse.

Because of the high frequency rates, that signal has to be stepped down and lose a bit of power before it hits the delicate electronics of the modem. This is done using a device that is on the dish itself as well as having a minimum of 150 feet of high-quality RG6 coax cable connecting the dish to the modem. So if you wonder why the installer used such a long cable just to wrap it up and drop half of it on the floor, well, this is why.

Something else you should know about is that Ka band satellite uses spot beams. A spot beam covers a specific area that really isn’t that big – about a third the size of Alberta. Each spot beam can support only so many users. If you hear that your buddy in Montana can get service, but you can’t because your spot beam is full, there isn’t much you can do about it. Also, you can’t move your service from spot beam to spot beam unless you are a certified installer. You will also need a clear line of sight to the satellite.

Here’s what the spot beams look like. As you can see, service is NOT available anywhere, like they sometimes advertise.

What’s the downside? Latency. What’s latency? Gamers call it lag. It’s that time when your signal is going between your house and the satellite. Typically, it’s about 230 milliseconds or more. That doesn’t seem like much considering the signal is covering about 45,000 miles in that time. However, when it comes to things like VoIP or online gaming, it makes it nearly impossible to do.

Another downside is something called the Fair Access Policy or FAP. What this means is that your Satellite Internet Service Provider will put limits on how much you can download over a period of time – usually 24 hours. If you exceed that, they will automatically slow your speed down to something close to dial-up, to give other users fair access to the satellite. When this happens, you have been FAP’ed. So, if you are a chronic downloader, you’ll have to change your ways for satellite Internet.

Is it picture time yet? Of course it is.

All this for about $800 for the hardware and $50 a month for ongoing service. Not bad, when you consider bringing in a phone line down a logging road will cost about $10,000 a pole. However, if you want to put a self-pointing dish on your RV, you’re going to need to dig a little deeper as the hardware will run you about $10,000. You could try to take a stationary dish with you, but pointing the new dishes can take up to eight-hours to aim, and you must be a certified installer.

I’m back again to bring you the next trick in my arsenal of Photoshop goodies. The subject today is color correction. Specifically RGB color correction, for web and screen (monitor, tv, little camera screen, iPhone) use.

There are 2 major, accepted color scales out there for consumption by human eyes – additive color and subtractive color. Subtractive color is accomplished via some sort of dyeing, screening or printing method. This is achieved by mixing either custom ink colors, or adopting a color scale , which in the subtractive realm of color, is called CMYK.

This refers to the 4 base colors used to physically, in paint or dye form, mix together to allow the formation of any color in the Cyan Magenta Yellow Black scale. This is what’s knows as CMYK – but i’m not sure why K stands for black though.

Additive color is the realm of discussion in this article. Additive color refers to the scale of color produced by adding different colors of light (rather than ink) to produce an image or color shade. In additive color, when you add the 3 primary colors together, Red Green and Blue (RGB), you get pure white, as illustrated in the additive color wheel above. Whereas if you mix together Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black inks, you get a dull brown.

Since RGB is the primary color scale for all monitors, phones, screens, laptops, anything that produces light; we will be discussing this today, as a way to empower you to be able to have brilliant images on your websites, and to get the most out of the pictures you snap in with your camera in any condition. We begin with a picture of a clearing on the ocean.

The following picture looks dull, discolored and too red. But you’d be surprised how much color information is contained in the picture, that simply needs to be brought out.

Open the image in Photoshop and you can follow along as you read the article. The tool we will be using can be found in the Image menu under Adjustments, and it’s called Levels. Otherwise it can be Hotkeyed at Ctrl-L.

The levels panel is one of the most used panels in Photoshop. You will also find Auto Levels. It is not recommended to use Auto Levels because it simply cannot replace the eye, and most importantly the taste of the viewer.

Once you have the levels panel open, there is a simple way to tell if all of the available color information is being used. The following is the levels output from the original image of the clearing on the water, showing a red discrepancy where all of the available color frequencies aren’t being utilized to their potential:

In order to correct this, and the inherent lack of color and brightness in the image, we need to give each respective primary color its own attention.

Using the Channel picker at the top we first choose the Red channel. Next, pull the right, white slider over to the left where the dots begin to appear on the graph, indicating the channels are being used. Next pull the left, black slider over to the right to the point where the channel begins to show usage. Do this for red, green, and blue respectively.

As you make these changes, make sure the Preview checkbox is ticked so you can see your changes in action. Here’s what the process looks like, after gradually fixing red, green and blue:

Notice that even when we only fix the red channel, the picture already gets slightly brighter and richer. By bringing these sliders in, we are essentially telling Photoshop to spread the available color information over a wider range of color frequencies, and thus fill out the full spectrum more richly. Next we move on to the green channel.

At this juncture shown above, the picture starts to become richer and more saturated with color.

After finally adjusting the blue channel below, we can see the picture is at a very rich stage. Details that weren’t previously visible shine out now. What used to be shadows in the bushes are now more bushes, more leaves, more detail. And you would have never known the image contains all this information if you didn’t open the Levels panel.

Using these steps, you can take any RGB image and really pull the most out of the information that’s there.

Not all the detail in a picture is immediately visible to the naked eye. But with the Photoshop Levels tool you can maximize on detail and quality for each image.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a simple and secure way to exchange files over the Internet. There are two players involved in any FTP transfer – the server or the site which is hosting the files and the client which contacts the server and requests to transfer a file. You can either use your browser or you can download a specific software to run as a FTP client.

What you will need:

The address of the FTP server you wish to communicate with. This can be an IP address or a domain name.

The login credentials for a FTP account on the server (you don’t need this for anonymous or public FTP).

An FTP client.

Assuming you know the address and the login credentials, let’s straight away hop over to the FTP client. As I mentioned before you can either use your browser as a client or use dedicated FTP software. If you want to download the occasional file or two from FTP sites you are good to do so with a browser, just type in the address of the file and make sure you use ftp:// instead of the usual http://.

If on the other hand you are managing a site or required to constantly upload/download files and manage accounts on the server you should use a FTP client designed for the task. Here are your choices:

Most operating systems have a built in command line FTP client with which you would have to get familiar with the commands.

You can also use one of the GUI FTP clients: Firefox users can try FireFTP, or you can use FileZilla, built specially with FTP in mind.

It is easier to find your way around the GUI tools. A typical GUI client would have two panes, one showing the remote FTP directory and the other showing directories on your computer. There are buttons representing transfer between the two panes. Browse to the directories you want to transfer to/from like you would do inside Windows Explorer, click on the appropriate transfer button and the client takes care of the rest.

All the commands are issued transparently by the client without requiring you to issue them explicitly. While this may seem easier, it is always handy to know what is going on behind the scenes, which you can by trying out the commands yourself.

Let’s touch up the basic FTP commands, shall we?

First and foremost you need to connect to the host. Use ftp to connect to the host. The server would respond with some information including if anonymous access is allowed. If it isn’t, you will be required to enter a username and password for the FTP account on the server.

Go ahead and enter those details. If you don’t know your username or password, you would have contact the administrator of the site or create a new FTP user (if you are the administrator).

After a successful login you can perform any desired operations on the files. You can always use the help to get a list of available commands or get help on any command as well.

Let us now see how you can perform the basic file operations over FTP:

1. Moving around

To get a directory listing both ls and dir work.

You can change directories using the ubiquitous cd command. e.g. cd www changes to the www directory, To change to a local directory (i.e. a directory on your computer) instead use the lcd command.

To know which directory you are currently working in use the pwd (present working directory) command.

You can create directories using the mkdir <dir-name> command, remove directory using rmdir <dir-name> .

To delete a file use the delete <filename> command, rename files using rename <old-name> <new-name> .

2. Set File Transfer type

If you are going to transfer text files (includes txt, html, shell scripts, css files etc) you need to set the file transfer mode to ascii using ascii command.

On the other hand if you are going to transfer binary files (like images, pdf, MS office files, compiled code or executables etc) you need to set the file transfer mode to binary using binary command.

3. Transferring files

To upload files to the server use the put command. e.g. put style.css would upload style.css from your local directory to the remote directory. Not that put doesn’t allow you to use wildcards, use mput instead, if you want to use wildcards.

Similarly to download a file you can use the get <filename> or the mget <filenames/wildcards> commands.

4. Creating your own FTP server

If you pay a hosting company for server space, they generally have things configured beforehand and some even create accounts for you. You can always use the management panel to create and edit FTP accounts and some settings. You would have to poke around the management panel your hosting company is providing you with.

If you want to create an FTP server on your home network some configuration is needed. Windows user can try the Filezilla server. Its great and simple to use. Linux users have plenty of options out of which vsftpd is pretty straighforward and feature rich.

Once you have configured the server you can access your files from any computer on your home network, using the IP address of the FTP server. If you want to be able to access your server from across the Internet you would require a static IP or perhaps you could look into something like dyndns (which we discussed briefly while configuring remote access to your torrents).

That’s it, you have enough knowledge to get you started and help you along whenever working with FTP. Let us know if you use some other tools for similar purposes.

Learning skills to increase our income or just having a moment to read a book for fun is hard to do when you put almost two-thirds of your day toward paying yesterday’s bills. Or am I the only one that feels like that?

I’m trying to get through my Instrumentation Technician apprenticeship as fast as I can, but between my day job and my night gig, I don’t have a lot of study time. But what I do have is a fair amount of time in my truck, traveling from site to site. Hmmm, light bulb, convert my text books into MP3’s that I can play on my iPod. Hmmm, bigger lightbulb! Write an article on that.

Step 1: Get a Good Free Text to Speech (TTS) Program

Of the three Text to Speech software apps I tested with my text file of tongue twisters, the one I liked best was Spesoft’s Free Text To MP3 Speaker. I also tried Speakonia and Ultra Hal Text to Speech Reader. Unfortunately, those two do not convert the text directly to Mp3 format – just .wav. Other than that, they didn’t have as many choices on recording quality as Spesoft’s.

Step 2: Get a Good Book

There is a veritable cornucopia of copyright expired books out on the web. Project Gutenberg is probably the best known. Go on over, search for a topic and find the book you would like to read. Now download it. Please consider making a donation to Project Gutenberg if you can. It really is a great resource that has been going for about 30 years now.

I suppose you could do this with an eBook you own, as long as it wasn’t for public performance and you didn’t upload it on the web somewhere, and you had the express written consent of Major League Baseball, its broadcasters and affiliates. That’s just an opinion – do so at your own risk.

Step 3: Edit the Text as Necessary

You could skip this step if you don’t have the time. Keep in mind that older books often have different spellings or curious characters that might not be read properly by your TTS program.

Step 4: Open the Book in Your TTS

Well, this means that you open the book in your Text to Speech software application.

Okay, here’s more details. Click on the Load Text from File button.

From there, navigate to the text file you want converted. Select that text file, and click on Open.

Now, your text should appear in the main part of the program, just like this!

I take credit for creating the grumbling gremlin tongue twister. It came to me as I was thinking about a gremlin that was, um, grumbling. The car, not the monster.

Step 5: Let the TTS Do It’s Thing

This is the time saver part. Just hit Record and Create Audio File, save it with the file name you want and walk the dog. Don’t have a dog? Walk the neighbour’s dog – just tell them first or it gets ugly, and the neighbour thinks you’re taking the dog for that ritual you had planned for later. Or something like that.

Spesoft Test to Speech software also allows you to choose different voices, adjust the speed, pitch and volume of the voice as well as tweak the recording quality. Everybody seems to have different preferences, so you might just want to play around with that for a bit. Personally, I set the Output Quality and Sample Rate as high as possible. My iPod doesn’t have much on it. Not much of a music guy.

Now you have an Mp3 of the book that you finally wanted to read. Pop it on the iPod, crank up the Shakespeare and get ready to cruise the strip. That’s kind of lame isn’t it? Well, hot librarians might dig it.

Over the years screencasting, also known as video tutorials have became very popular on the internet. The reason that they have became so popular is because it lets a user record their screen and share it with others to show them how to do something on a computer.

If you browse through sites such as YouTube, Vimeo and Blip.tv, you will see that there are lots of video tutorials but with very few of them clear to view and understand.

There are many things that are needed to create a great video tutorial and in this article, I will try my best to teach you some techniques I have learned along the way.

The Right Apps

To start creating a screencast, the you will need to first of all download an application that will allow you to record your screen. For Mac OS X, there are a few applications such as iShowU, ScreenFlow and Screenium. You can try out these apps by downloading them from their website. However, to be able to use the full functionality, you will have to purchase a license. If you are a Windows user then I recommend using Camtasia Studio because it has a lot of great features. Camtasia Studio for Windows is very similar to ScreenFlow for Mac OS X.

A free alternative for both Windows and Mac OS X is Jing. Jing is a screen capture tool from the creators of Camtasia Studio but has been created specifically for screencasts. Although the application can be used without any real limits, the only downside is that the limit on a single recording is five minutes.

For Linux users, there is an open source project on Sourceforge called Xvidcap.

Set The Right Resolution

The first thing to do when creating a screencast for the online audience is to set your screen resolution to the lowest possible setting.

The reason why we do this is so that we can record as much of the screen without losing too much quality when we compress the screencast after we have finished recording. Also, when viewers on video sharing websites view it at full screen mode then the screencast dimensions will most likely be smaller than their resolution. This means that they will be able to see everything clearly including the text.

The Right Gear

When creating a screencast, it is very important that viewers can understand what you are saying so that they can easily follow what you are trying to teach or show. For this reason, it is not recommended that you use the microphone that is built into your laptop because there is a chance that they will hear the fan and you may sound distant and unclear.

If you are going to create a screencast then invest in a standalone microphone or a headset. The headset that I use is the Logitech ClearChat Pro headset and it works great.

The Right Words

If you are doing a screencast for a video tutorial on how to create a script in PHP, for example; it is a good idea to perform a test run, create the script and think about what you would say at certain steps and making notes so that you can best describe what you are trying to get across. If you are creating a long screencast,it is better to pause the recording a take a break for a few minutes because if you make a mistake that you can’t resolve when recording the screencast, you can start again from the recording before you paused. If you are showing off a new tool to perform a certain task, then take some time to introduce the tool and the link to download it so that you do not cause confusion. Most probably, your viewers are those who are new to computers and don’t really know the means to search for the tool you are showcasing.

When you feel that there is no more that you can explain to the user, end the recording by letting them know the ways that they can contact you if they need help. List your Twitter username or email address.

The Right Format

Because the screen resolution was a very low setting, when it comes to exporting our screencast, keep the dimensions to 100%. The image below shows the settings I use for exporting my screencasts. For a short screencast I did recently, the size of the exported MOV file was 32MB and the duration of the screencast was 7 minutes 30 seconds. That works out to 4.3MB per minute which is relatively low to other compression techniques I have used in the past.

Compressing a file can take some time, depending on how long the screencast is and its dimensions. So go and grab a cup of coffee while you wait for it to finish.

The Finishing Touches

When the file has been successfully encoded and compressed, I will then open it with QuickTime Player and add a logo at the beginning of the screencast as well as a link to my website so people who stumble upon my videos on video sharing websites know where they can find more of my stuff.

Now that you have finished all the recording, editing and exporting, it is now time to upload your screencast to as many video sharing websites as you know. I upload to many video sharing websites because different people use different services so the more video sharing websites you upload your content to, the wider the audience you will reach.

If you have a website, then you should also embed it there. When displaying screencasts on my website, the service that I use is Blip.tv because the compression of your screencast when it has been uploaded is very good and hardly any quality is lost. They also have ads within the videos so you can make a little bit of money.

It is time to promote your newly created screencast on your website, so tweet about it and ask people to retweet. Add it to StumbleUpon and del.icio.us, use Facebook to promote it and here are 5 more tips on promotion, hope they come in helpful. Don’t forget to add it to tutorial websites if it is relevant to them also.

If there is anything else that you would like to know about creating a screencast then please feel free to post a comment below and I shall reply the best I can.

The grade level where children make the transition from math to algebra can be very easy for some students, but difficult and confusing for others. Math concepts that are centered on clearly defined numbers and with all “factors” within the problem typically defined, are usually fairly easy for most students to follow and understand.

However, algebra concepts insert “unknowns” into equations and formulas that can really throw many students for a loop. Solving an equation for a factor that appears to be on the “wrong side” of the equal sign can feel like a very strange and impossible premise for those students.

As usual, help is available on the Internet, and the following list are some of the best free algebra homework help websites that can make the process of learning algebra a whole lot easier.

MyAlgebra – A Free Algebra Problem Solver

A very simple and useful resource is the MyAlgebra online problem solver application. While this isn’t the first place a student should go for help, because it simply provides the answer to the equation, it is an excellent website for students to check their work.

Students can work through their algebra problems, and when they’ve come up with a solution that they feel is correct, they can simply enter in the equation and click “Answer.” Of course, solving for equations isn’t the only thing the application can do – there is a long list of funcions in the drop-down list to choose from.

Obviously, the most common choice will be to “solve the equation,” and the nice thing about this online application is that it converts both the problem and the solution into the same sort of format that it would appear in the textbook.

Unfortunately, “show steps” isn’t really a legitimate option, as it takes you to a website for Bagatrix, where you can purchase Algebra solving software that provides step-by-step solutions. Regardless, as an answer-checker the free online app proves very useful.

Illuminations – Cool Algebra Activities and Lessons

Nothing is quite as frustrating for many students as trying to understand abstract concepts, and learning to do so by reading drab and boring textbooks that make you want to go to sleep. Luckily, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the U.S. understands this problem and created a website called Illuminations that brings the subject (including algebra) to life for students.

The site includes high quality activities and lessons that cover all aspects of both math and algebra. Of all available free algebra homework help websites, this is definitely the one that’s the most fun and interesting. For lessons, you select grade levels and topics (one area is devoted to just algebra), and you get access to dozens of valuable lessons that teach important algebra concepts. However, my favorite part of the site is the “activities” area that offers some really high quality and valuable online applications that graphically show algebraic principles, such as this “pan balance” app that graphically displays what happens when you change different elements of equations.

Tutorvista – Free Lessons

While Tutorvista isn’t technically a free site, because the primary aim is to get parents to sign up their children for an online tutor, the website does offer an entire algebra help section with well formatted lessons that teach students about the many elements of algebra, from foundation principles all the way to the more advanced topics.

Of course, if you do need tutoring for your child, you can actually submit an assignment and for an average fee of $5, a tutor will actually send back the answer in a fully worked-out step-by-step solution. However, before you start dishing out your cash for any paid tutoring, make sure to check out the next free Algebra homework help website that actually does offer many tutoring services for free.

Algebra.com – Math Tutors Who Just Can’t Get Enough

Of course, the best place to get some free algebra tutoring is Algebra.com, an online community of mathematicians who are obsessed with the topic. You can turn their obsession into your child’s advantage by posting problems for the tutor community to answer. The website itself offers more lessons and information than probably any other algebra help website out there.

Just the algebra section includes pre-algebra, algebra I and algebra II – and of course there’s a quick and easy “Universal Simplifier and Solver” at the top that will either simplify or solve your algebra equations. At the top of the site, there’s a “Free Tutors” menu option that’ll take you to a section where you can either sign up to be a free tutor (a public service which gives you exposure for your tutoring business), or you can submit your own algebra questions to the tutors. There are almost a thousand active tutors – and the question/answer area is a huge community of fantastic tutors who are eager to help kids with their algebra problems.

Math.com – Interactive Algebra Help

Another valuable site filled with step-by-step instructions and lessons for students to learn the most important algebra concepts is Math.com. This site covers both the basics as well as advanced concepts under categories like “The Language of Algebra”, “Equations and Inequalities” and “Graphing Equations and Inequalities.”

The lessons at Math.com take students through an easy step-by-step “wizard,” and on each step there’s often a “show me” option students can click where the application offers examples or additional information that better explains a specific topic. It’s just like having a teacher available with instant answers to the typical questions that students often ask.

Drexel University – The Math Forum

The Math Forum is a valuable public service offered by Drexel University that offers both students and teachers dozens of resources. Many of the resources are buried within internal links, but the Algebra Section alone offers classroom materials for teachers, Internet projects, public forums and even links to algebra software throughout the net.

The Math Forum is one of the largest math & algebra resources on the net, and if you can afford to donate it would be a valuable and worthy cause to contribute. Mathematics, and algebra in particular are critical skills for students to learn early on that can tremendously simplify their lives later on. Any free algebra homework help websites that exist on the Internet are very positive resources that should be promoted and applauded by everyone.

Do you know of any additional algebra resources for teachers, parents or students on the Internet? Share them in the comments section below.

Good evening, Ladies and Gents,

Allow me to re-introduce myself, my name is Mike, also (hopefully) known in the online community as Commodore 64 or C64 for short. I have spent the last 12 years, since Photoshop 5.5, exploring the many realms of this staple of the graphic designer’s diet. Aside from the usual plethora of features, Photoshop offers tools for anyone ranging from budding photographer to astrononomer.

Throughout the years, I’ve known Photoshop to be ultra powerful in the pathing arena. The pathing tool, or pen tool, might very well be the most powerful tool in the Adobe arsenal mainly because of its origins.

I’ll keep this history lesson brief: The idea behind the pen tool, or less commonly known as the Bezier tool (pictured above) is that geometric constants can be used to create flowing, curvacious lines and designs. It was because of this tool, developed by Pierre Bézier in 1962 and then put to work in the auto manufacturing industry, came about the advent of curvy, smooth cars rather than the Caprice Classics of the day. Fast forward to 2009 – Adobe has put Beziers mathematic principles to good use in many of it’s previous versions of Photoshop and Illustrator up until today.

I use the pen tool primarily to make quick, smooth, profesh cutouts of anything ranging from a bikini model with hair blowing in the wind to a tree with a multitude of branches (in combination with some color specific selections).

Today, we’ll concentrate on pathing out a simple object from its background, let’s say a freshly cut orange with shadows on a white surface:

Firstly, we need to identify a few key features we’ll need to pay attention to as we path. First, the base shadow and the shadow reflection on the actual oranges. We will be removing the base shadow and leaving the shadow reflection on the orange for now.

Secondly, let’s choose our pen tool ().

We need to verify that the pen tool is set correctly for what we’re doing – the graphic below depicts how your pen tool options should be set:

Now, we begin to path. Usually, I like to start at a spot where two circular shapes meet at a rough, sharp angle. In this case, it’s on top. Click once there as shown to create your first anchor point.

Next, follow (with your eyes) along to the right around the circumference of the orange. Since the orange is not a perfect circle, follow until you see a jitter of some sort in the smoothness of the circle, in this case its near the stem.

Click and HOLD the left mouse button where you see a jitter to create another anchor point and pull the handle it creates to manipulate the resulting path to snugly fit around the shape of the orange as shown on the left. Don’t be afraid to take the tool outside of the white work area. You can now release the mouse button.

The next step, while holding down the Alt key, grab (click and hold) the handle that extends in the direction you’re traveling with the pathing tool (clockwise), in this case the handle on the bottom right. Drag this handle point into the origin of the anchor point as shown and release. You’ve just created your first path line!

Note: The Bezier tool is only capable of creating partial circles with each pair of path points. Anything more than a quarter-circle will require another pair of anchor points as it will become oval, thus losing its roundness.

Continue these 3 steps while following snugly around the oranges. Make sure not to spread your anchor points too thinly.

Once you follow around the oranges, taking care to exclude the base shadow from your path as shown. Close the path by simply clicking and holding on the path point where you first started as shown, while pulling the handle out until the desired final shape is achieved.

You now have a completed path. You can use this path to create a cutout selection using the paths panel alongside the layers panel, while also knocking out the shadow that was previously given to this picture.

In order to knock out the shadows remaining on the oranges themselves, you have to simply grab the dodge tool at maybe 10% and start to lightly brush away the shadowy areas on the bottom until the area is a nice orange. On top of that, you can also create your own shadow and lighting direction since you will have knocked out the original shadow and now have a layer with an actual shape to it.

I hope this helps all of the aspiring Photoshoppers out there to begin delving a little deeper into the powers of the Photoshop. Thanks for reading folks.

For some reason, whenever you search for anything free online, you are inundated with sites created solely for collecting email addresses or for selling a product. This is especially true when it comes to sites on the Internet that offer free piano lessons. Unfortunately, almost 90 percent of the websites with “free piano lessons” in the title only offer one or two very basic lessons.

Ultimately, they want you to sign up for paid full-length piano lessons. Thankfully, there really are legitimate websites out there that do offer legitimate, free piano lessons. MakeUseOf has always offered some of the best resources for music lessons, such as the review of ZentaoGuitar lessons for learning the electric guitar or Laurence’s list of essential free guitar playing online tools. Focusing on piano music, I offer MUO readers the following list of the top 5 free piano lesson websites online.

The Top 5 Websites for Learning Piano Online

This year, we are signing my youngest daughter up for piano lessons. In order to get her through the summer before lessons start, I decided to scour the web for free piano lessons. The problem, I quickly discovered, is that it’s extremely difficult to find legitimate free piano lessons. However, after spending several days sifting through most of the online offerings, I came up with a list of five of the most useful and educational piano lessons around. My criteria for classifying a website with piano lessons as useful and “top-ranking” was the following.

The quality and skill level of the website author’s music expertise

The “intent” of the website – does it only exist to sell you something or to actually teach you about playing piano?

The technology – are there flash or java applications that let you actually play music based on the lesson at hand?

Using these criteria, I was able to isolate five very useful and high-quality piano lesson websites that anyone could use to teach themselves how to play piano.

Zebra Keys: Everything You Need on One Site

Zebra Keys is probably one of the best sites for piano lessons. Each of the lessons are professionally written and cleanly laid out so that they’re very easy to follow. Best of all, an interactive piano keyboard is built right into the lesson articles so that you can practice what you’re learning directly on the lesson page.

Each key is clearly laid out, and the letter of each note shows up just underneath the key – making it much easier to learn which note goes with each piano key. Once you’ve progressed through a few lessons and you want to try your hand at playing a song – Zebra Keys offers Z-Board V1.0, a virtual keyboard with all notes and chords displayed on it.

This makes it far easier to play music at the beginning, because you aren’t struggling so hard to remember where the correct notes are. While this feature is definitely fun to use, probably the most useful and effective resource at the Zebra Keys website are the list of “trainer” tools that can help piano students with certain aspects of understanding music.

The example above is the interactive “note trainer,” but other web applications available include the keyboard trainer, interval ear trainer, scale ear trainer, and a chord ear trainer.

PianoNanny: Better Than the Real Thing

One of the best sites for learning piano online is PianoNanny. This is one of those rare sites that offers the most detailed, expert piano lessons for absolutely free. Just reading through the lessons, you get the sense that you’re sitting beside an actual piano teacher who really knows their stuff. Each session includes text, keyboard images to help you visualize what the teacher is talking about, and even mini-apps like a “student note pad” to take notes.

Another cool mini-app that you’ll find in the middle of some of these lessons is a “12 note companion” where you can try the lesson that you just learned.

As you press each piano key, the note is automatically displayed. This approach forces you to try to remember where each note is, which of course encourages better memorization and faster learning than the approach ZebraKeys uses. Featuring 13 starter, 11 intermediate and 10 advanced lessons, PianoNanny is the most thorough of all the piano lesson websites listed in this article.

Plern Online Piano Teacher and Composer

The Plern Piano is easily one of the most addictive and, believe it or not, fun online tools that you can use to learn how to play piano. The Plern Piano tool has dual uses; music composers can create a song from scratch, or piano students can import music from a MIDI file to learn how to play a song. Plern Piano plays through the song and as it scrolls across the music sheet, it provides you with a graphical representation of which key you need to press as well as the duration of the note. Think Tetris in musical form.

BerkleeShares – Free Piano Lessons From the Berklee College of Music

Starting in 2003, the Berklee College of Music started offering free music lessons online. The lessons include guitar, brass, bass and even DJ & turntable training. When you click on the “keyboards” section, you’ll find a list of 12 lessons in either YouTube video format or as a PDF document. The videos are about one to two minutes, and the PDF documents are an average of about 2 pages with embedded music clips.

For the most part, these lessons are very short, and feature a lot of promotion for the paid Berklee online certificate programs. However, they do offer excellent tips and useful content. This website is a good supplement, but don’t count on teaching yourself how to play piano by using these very short and simple lessons alone.

Ricci Adams’ MusicTheory Teaches You… Music Theory

MusicTheory is another very useful (and free) website that can teach you to play the piano. This website has 37 lessons, 10 “trainer” applications and 3 music utilities. The trainer applications on this website are exactly identical to those available at the Zebra Keys website but there are many more of them offered here. Best of all, the lessons are very thorough and offer a small keyboard app so that you can test some of the techniques you learn in each lesson.

The lessons are reminiscent of a Powerpoint presentation and you step through them in much the same way – by clicking an arrow on the screen. The lessons are clearly written by an expert and after going through these 37 piano lessons you’re sure to advance in your piano playing with a very thorough awareness of music theory.

I have always found that one of the toughest parts about working in Photoshop is selecting parts of an image for deletion or enhancement. When I first started using Photoshop many years ago, I thought the only way to accurately make complicated selections, ones that aren’t simple rectangles or ovals, was to use the polygonal lasso tool. If you’ve ever done this, then you know it can sometimes get very tedious.

An easier way to make a selection is by using Quick Mask in Photoshop.

With an image file open, you enter Quick Mask mode by clicking the Quick Mask button near the bottom of your tools pallette, or by hitting ‘q’ on your keyboard. It will appear that nothing has happened, but you will have in fact been magically transported into the rose-coloured world of the Quick Mask.

The simplest and easiest way to start working in this mode is to choose a brush, set your foreground color to black and start painting away. You will immediately notice that as you paint, even though your foreground colour is set to black, everything you brush over will come out reddish. Don’t worry. You want this to happen.

To use an analogy, when you are painting a room, you use masking tape to cover all the bits you don’t want to get covered in your lovely shade of eggshell mocha. Well, that’s the same thing you’re doing here in Quick Mask. Everything you cover with your reddish “masking tape” will be protected from whatever it is you’re going to do with the image. The idea is that Photoshop will “select” everything except what you have painted in red.

Once you’ve painted over all the places you want “protected”, simply click the Quick Mask button again, or type ‘q’ on your keyboard. Everything except what you just painted over will be encircled by marching ants indicating it’s been selected.

If this is what you want, then just move on from here, deleting or enhancing the selected area. Otherwise, you can go back into Quick Mask mode again and make adjustments to your mask.

What if you want to enhance, delete or otherwise change the area you painted over, rather than have that area masked? Easy as pie. Once you’re out of Quick Mask mode, select the inverse of what is currently selected by choosing Select->Inverse in the menus or hitting the CTRL-Shift-I keyboard shortcut or ⌘-Shift-I on a Mac. (That’s the letter that comes after H, not the number 1)

Here are a few tips:

Painting with black as your foreground colour applies the mask to an area

Painting with white erases mask from an area

You can use other tools (eg: gradient) to create a mask

Try changing the hardness of a brush when creating a mask

There are lots of other ways to select stuff in Photoshop. Each has its own uses. I’ll explore some of them in future articles.

What’s your go-to method for selecting stuff? The one you always try first. Is it one of the lasso tools? Color range?

If you’re new to Photoshop, as everyone is at some point, then you may not be familiar with the idea of layers. Thus, we parepared a Photoshop layers tutorial for you.

Most modern image editing software uses layers to allow you to make changes on top of what’s already there in a non-destructive way. This means you can edit your image as you like, making each change on a new layer, and just hide or delete layers to see the previous version.

Layers are fundamental to Photoshop and if you’re editing without taking advantage of them, you’re really not using the program to its full potential.

Think of each layer as a piece of transparent plastic or glass that you lay over the original image. You can make changes to each layer without affecting any of the others. When you paint or draw or type on one layer, you can still see through to the layer below. You can also remove layers (delete or hide) without affecting the others. Very convenient.

To get started you need to make sure your layers palette is open. If you don’t see it in the bottom right of your screen, then click on Windows in the menus and choose Layers or hit F7 on your keyboard.

Now here’s what the layers palette looks like

… and here’s the image itself.

The little eyeball next to each layer indicates that layer is visible. Clicking on the eyeball toggles the visibility. The icons (with the checkerboard backgrounds) represents each individual layer and the image in each shows the relative position of the layer contents on the image as a whole. You can manually change the name of each layer. This comes in very handy when dealing with 10, 20 or more layers in one image.

In the image above, each of the three items are on their own layers, so I can move them around or make other changes to them, without affecting the other layers. Here’s an example:

Here are some things you can do with layers:

Add text to a picture

When adding text to an image you add it on its own text layer. Text layers can only contain text and only text layers can contain editable text. You can make changes to a text layer (eg: drop-shadow etc.) without affecting the image below it.

Create a montage

You can create a picture montage with each image on its own layer, thereby making it easier to move them into the proper place.

Using an auto-select layer might come in handy when creating a montage. By default you must select which layer to edit in the layers palette. With the auto-select layer checked, Photoshop selects whatever layer it thinks you want, based on where you click.

Darkroom type effects

There are special layers in Photoshop called adjustment layers. These allow you to non-destructively make adjustments to your image. You can use these to increase contrast, or mute some overpowering colours or even convert your entire image to black and white. I’ll look at adjustment layers in more detail in a future post.

All layers have an Opacity slider. This lets you either reduce the opacity (make it fade away) of whatever’s on the layer. In the case of adjustment layers, the slider allows you to reduce the strength of an effect.

Layers have Blend Modes which are special ways of blending a layer with the ones below it.

You can also add effects to a layer, things like drop shadow and gradient overlay. Once applied, these effects are listed in the layers pallette and can be easily edited later without affecting anything else you’ve done.

These are but a few of the many things you can do with layers in Photoshop. In fact, just about everything you do to an image should happen on it’s own layer, so you can easily revert to a previous version.

Please note: I’m using Photoshop CS4 for this tutorial. YMMV on other versions. Please ask in the comments if you have any questions about the version you’re using and I’m sure I or someone else will be able to help.

Hollywood movies often have a tech geek entering commands and doing amazing things. While it may not be that easy to hack into public transport systems or or control the world like Eagle Eye, the command line is certainly a geeks playground.

Want to show off your command line prowess to your geeky friends but don’t know any cool tricks? Well you are in luck. The following websites will give you plenty of tricks and tips to satiate your hunger:

shell-fu

“Fu” is defined as possessing superior skills related to an art. Aptly named “Shell fu” houses user-submitted command line goodies, tips and tricks. You can vote entries up if you like them and vote them down if you find they are harmful or do not work as advertised.

If you have some tricks of your own you can even submit them and they will be added to the site after the moderators have a look at them.

command-line-fu

Shell fu and Command-line fu are almost identical in concept. Command-line fu allows users to share their CLI wisdom with others and also vote up and down on submitted snippets.

Both shell-fu and command-line fu allow you to follow snippets through RSS and Twitter although I did find command-line fu offers a bit of extra control on RSS feeds.

snipt

Snipt is the “long term memory for coders”. Snipt is a collection of frequently used commands and code snippets. You can share these snippets with your co-workers or make them public. Public snippets are viewable to everyone and for our specific case, we are interested in the bash section. However feel free to browse other sections as well.

good coders code, great reuse

While all the other resources mentioned utilize the power of the crowds to build up content, this one is different. It is Peteris Krumins blog about programming, software and hacking.

What’s so special about it? The famous sed, awk one liners, vim tips, plugins and cheat sheets that Peteris has fabricated over time. The occasional musical geek friday is fun as well.

While it may not be updated as often as the others, but more often than not the content is worth the wait.

Pick up the basics

While the places mentioned above have plenty of content to keep you busy learning, they are not the best places to start your journey. If you want to start with basics have a look at Introduction to the Linux Command Line published on MakeUseOf earlier. You may also find command line basics here and here. For advanced topics you can read the Advanced Shell Scripting Guide.

That’s plenty of information to keep you involved and build up your Linux-fu! Do you know of any good sites to learn Linux commands? Or have you referred to a Linux command line tutorial that you really like? Share with the world in the comments!

Photoshop is hard. There’s all kinds of menus, commands, and keyboard shortcuts that you’ve got to figure out. Once you learn how it works, it’s an unbelievably useful and powerful tool, but the learning curve is enormous.

Using the Web though, you can learn how to do just about anything in Photoshop, and either become great at it or just get really good at faking it. Either way, you’re doing cool stuff.

Here are ten sites to learn Photoshop online and get you Photoshopping like a champion:

You Suck at Photoshop

You Suck at Photoshop is the place to start, just to defeat you a little bit and make you realize how badly you need to learn Photoshop. In all seriousness, though, Donnie Hoyle’s video tutorial series is both hilarious and informative. They’re helpful for learning how to do simple things, where to find particular tools, and how to mess with the pictures of people you love.

Tutorial9

Tutorial9 has a ton of different tutorials, including a lot of them for Photoshop. Every tutorial has step-by-step instructions, complete with pictures of the tools you need and the buttons you should click on (really helpful- what in the world does the “capture” tool look like?).

Then, for everything you need to do, there’s a quick video showing you what it looks like. There’s no narration, but that’s okay- the step-by-step instructions do everything you need. Tutorial9 helps you do all kinds of things with Photoshop- my favorite was creating burnt parchment. You know, without burning anything. Definitely agreat site to learn photoshop online.

PSDTUTS

With PSDTUTS, you’ll see lots and lots of pictures. Tutorials are made up almost entirely of pictures that give you the slightest detail instructions on how to do various things in Photoshop.

One of the best things about PSDTUTS are the comments on the tutorials, which help to iron out the possible issues with the tutorials as presented. The tutorials are long, because they’re so broken down, but if they can teach me to make a Web banner out of a motorcycle, they’re doing something right.

Good-Tutorials

There’s nothing terribly unique about Good-Tutorials, except that it’s more of a general guide to using Photoshop than a guide to achieving a particular effect in Photoshop.

Though Good-Tutorials does have those tutorials, it’s also got things like “Create a Photoshop Action for Screenshots” to help save you time and effort in Photoshop. Simple tutorials and powerful Photoshopping both come from Good-Tutorials.

Photoshop Lady

The Photoshop Lady pulls together some of the best Photoshop tutorials from around the Web, and lets you read and watch them easily. If you create an account, you can save tutorials for later, and you can also see the “Most Viewed” and “Highest Rated” tutorials to see what other people are learning how to do. Since it’s not centralized, some tutorials are better than others, but most of it is good stuff.

Photoshop Tutorials

Photoshop Tutorials combines tutorials for Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photography. It covers a whole range of things, and always tells you how advanced the particular tutorial is. Some are incredibly complicated, and some are great ways to do really basic things in Photoshop.

Though it doesn’t have the largest database I found, it probably wins my award for easiest-to-follow tutorials. Users also rate and comment on tutorials, so you can see what people liked and hated on the site.

Luxa

Luxa calls itself a “social learning site for Photoshop artists.” It’s a combination of tutorials, videos, and design articles. Users suggest video and tutorial topics, and Luxa helps them learn Photoshop.

To really appreciate Luxa’s community, you’ll want to become a member, which is a bit of a pain but creates a lot of benefits. There’s also a voting system (though not an oft-used one yet) that helps bring the best to the top. In addition to all the tutorials too, Luxa also has a large collection of Photoshop brushes that will let you achieve before-impossible awesomeness.

Photoshop Contest

Photoshop Contest is one part site for Photoshop ninjas, one part site for becoming one. There are contests for people doing cool things with Photoshop, but also a big repository of tutorials and videos.

Since the makers of the tutorials are usually on the site because they know Photoshop inside and out, they often have cool tips for how to take shortcuts and “cheat” an image. Most of the tutorials are pretty basic, though at least for me, there’s nothing basic about any of Photoshop.

PSHero

PSHero gets onto the list for being the most practical of the bunch, and sharing the most tutorials that the average user would actually want. If you’re looking to do things like design a website, create logos, or make your photos grungier, you’re set with PSHero.

There’s not a lot of higher-level stuff to be found, but I found that PSHero was perfect for someone like me, who’s more likely to be creating a logo than an anime airplane eating a lion on top of a mountain. The tutorials are easy to follow, and definitely geared toward the inexperienced Photoshopper.

PSDTop

Another aggregator (I think the name might have taken from AllTop), PSDTop is a great place to find all kinds of cool Photoshop Tutorials.

Though it’s not the only site to have categories, its breakdown of the tutorials into various types (Drawing, Digital Art, etc.) is a great way to become ninja-like at a particular skill in Photoshop. Since it’s an aggregator, it too will have the occasional dud tutorial, but most are good.

From introductions to Photoshop to doing things that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world, these ten sites will help you earn your black belt in the wide world of Photoshopping. But obviously many more Photoshopping tutorial websites exist out there so tell us your recommendations in the comments below.

Let’s face it – not all of us are born geniuses. Not everyone can know how to do everything in this world (although I think maybe Chuck Norris can!) and we have to learn how to do something before we can be confident enough to do it flawlessly.

We have been learning since childhood and life will keep teaching us something for as long as we live. Ahem – but there is a problem – life doesn’t always teach things when we require them the most. The solution? Hail the mighty Internet and power of the crowds!

Want to learn to how to tie a tie? You will not only find ‘how to’ do it but which style do you require. Want to learn to use a multimeter? Sure why not? You name the task, most probably you will find a ‘how to’ for it on the Internet. There are some very good sites dedicated to such how to’s and present the information in text as well as in the form of how to videos.

Here we will have a look at some of the best cool “how to” videos sites (in random order):

Howcast

Howcast offers cool how to videos as well as how to wiki guides. Howcast combines user ideas with the expertise of professional studio video to give you what is nothing short of amazing how to videos. You don’t have to bother about blurry lenses or wrong camera angles. With howcast one thing is for sure – the quality of the videos will not disappoint you. Whether you learn something or not is a different issue (some of them are plain obvious), although the ideas are not bad either.

Video Jug

They call it the definitive online “Encyclopedia of Life” because that is pretty much what it is. VideoJug offers videos that are professionally made and thoroughly researched. There are “how to” videos and then there are “Ask the Expert” videos. The experts are carefully chosen and are no less than savants in their particular fields to address common questions and issues that people might have. You can also get involved and upload your own videos, take part in discussions and use your webcam to help other users out.

eHow

eHow is another website that teaches you “how to do just about everything”. From losing weight to negotiating a salary to kissing on a date, there is plenty of content to help you figure out just how to do something. The site offers how to’s in the form of professionally written articles and videos covering a wide range of topics. eHow also has a resources page for all your how to needs. As with other sites that are mentioned, you can also become a member of eHow and share your knowledge with the world.

WonderHowTo

If the video has the intent to instruct, you will most likely find it on Wonderhowto. The site asks users to submit how to videos. These could be from other video sites and then users will be able to see and rate them on Wonderhowto. So it is more of an aggregator than a creator (if I may say so). However, the concept is great and it turns out to be an excellent place to discover how to content from other sites all in one place.

SuTree

Formed by a combination of the Sanskrit word Sutra – symbolizing the collection of knowledge and Tree – symbolizing the growth and spread of knowledge, SuTree is another aggregator of how to videos from all around the web. Although not overflowing with content, the site is steadily gaining some rapport in the how to videos category. What remains to be seen is how it will distinguish itself from all other similar sites.

Instructables and other Mentions

While not specifically known for their how to videos, it is hard to imagine a video site without how to videos. Youtube, Metacafe and Instructables top the list. Why did I put Instructables with the “other mentions” ? Well because there are far too many instances when the screenshots won’t be perfect, the instructions would be missing a step or two or the video quality would be crappy. Leave that aside and consider the user base and the amount of content and it would give any site a run for their money. Definitely one to keep in your bookmarks and check out when you need a tip or too.

There is plenty of content out there if you need to whet your appetite and pick up on a skill. You just have to go and look for it. I find Howcast, eHow and VideoJug really good for such kinds of videos. A site like WonderHowTo is great for discovering content and sharing it with the world. All in all these are all great sites to discover some tutorials and there is so much content that watching videos seems a little too much work these days! If only we could learn things Matrix style!

Remember learning Kung Fu? Oh and BTW here is a How To for Kung Fu!

What do you think of these sites? Would you call them best how to videos sites? Do you visit some other site for your ‘how to’ needs? Tell us about it in the comments.

I love playing chess and collecting chessboards and like everything else, my enjoyment of the game has moved online. As well as playing installed software chess games, I also have some favourite chess websites where I like to meet other players from around the world for a game or two. After all, it gets boring eventually playing against a computer. Sometimes, it’s good to play against a real live human being.

So here are some of the places where I like to play chess online. Later, I will also discuss some of the places where I have learned some chess tactics.

But one place which I will not talk about is Yahoo Games (in case anyone starts getting worked up in the comments). I used to enjoy playing chess in Yahoo Games but the site is just not built for Firefox (Yahoo seems to be not inclined either to rewrite the site for Firefox) and so having to use Internet Explorer all the time just ruined it for me. So eventually I stopped using the site and moved on.

So here’s the three places I use for my chess fix :

ItsYourTurn

I wrote about ItsYourTurn back in September last year and it’s great for playing chess. Free IYT members get 40 game moves in 24 hours (paid members get unlimited moves) but the whole idea of ItsYourTurn is that you make a move, walk away from the game and come back to it later or the day after. So 40 moves a day is more than enough.

I personally have 10 games going on at one time – I make one move on each game every morning then I don’t go back to it until the next morning. But there are paid members who have dozens and dozens of games going at the same time. So if you’re looking for an opponent, you won’t find it hard.

If you feel like upgrading to a paid membership, it costs $29.95 per year. But I don’t see the point personally.

Flash Chess III

This requires Adobe Flash to play but it has a nice interface and the website plays a good game against you with three levels of difficulty. You use your mouse to move your pieces around the board and there’s a time limit.

Email Chess

One that I have only recently started using. You set up the game, enter your email address and the email address of your opponent.

You make your first move, and then the game and your first move are emailed to your opponent. Their move is then emailed back to you and so the match begins!

Soundkeepers has a 10 day maximum for moves, after which it automatically resigns the player who has taken more than 10 days.

Online Sources To Learn Chess

So, playing chess at these three places is good enough but you’ve got to learn how to play and you’ve got to improve your game. So where you do find advice on chess tactics?

About.com Chess: The old dependable About.com which everyone can rely on. You can learn everything on this site ranging from the history of the game, the rules, beginner’s tips, tactics to improve, books and equipment to buy and much more.

Chess Problems – the best way to improve is to be given a chess problem to solve. ”Chess Problems” gives you problems to solve ranging from “novice” to “fiendish”

Chess Openings – the most important moves in chess are always the first ones. That’s why you need to always practice your opening moves until they are perfect. “Chess Openings” is “an interactive series of +8,000 unique board positions, from first moves through to full development of pieces, covering all major openings, defences and variations.”

Predator At The Chessboard – I just love the name of this site. This has lots of advice on each chess piece, its value and various tactics. My only complaint is that it is lots of text and no graphics which makes it hard to follow.

Free Internet Chess Server – many chess games document your every move (and your opponent’s move). If you save those moves, you can submit your games to the Free Internet Chess Server and more experienced chess players can analyze them for you. They will then spot possible areas where you are weak and suggest improvements.

So that is basically where I play chess and how I improve my game. What about you? Where online do you play and what online sources do you use to improve your game?

For my MakeUseOf articles I’m constantly resizing images so that they will fit into our page template. As a result, I go through a lot of repetitive actions with GIMP, the free image editing program. After a quick Google search, I found a powerful tool to help me save a ton of time by batch image resizing.

GIMP doesn’t have a built-in batch editing feature because one of the ideas behind the software is that users will create their own scripts and add-ons to enhance it as they need it. This can be a bit frustrating for newer users because they cannot readily code their own features and they must hunt down the things they need online. This add-on is definitely worth the inconvenience and you’ll probably use it for some time to come.

First of all, batch images editing is the process of applying identical alterations to a large number of images. In this example I will be talking about creating multiple sizes of multiple images and renaming them for categorization. There are many other things you can do with batch editing though. For instance you can:

Turn

Rotate

Color

Crop

Sharpen

Rename

Resize

The first step in any batch edit is downloading and installing the required add-on (if you’ve never done it before). Head on over to the home page for David’s Batch Processor (DBP). If you are a Linux user, the instructions are listed fairly clearly on the “Where Do I Get It?” section of the page. If you’re a Windows user, download the zip archive in that same section and unzip them to somewhere easily accessible (the desktop is fine).

Unzip that file (simply called “dbp”) and place it in the folder at this location on your computer “C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins.” This is the default location of course, you may have named the program folder something other than “GIMP-2.0″ if you made modifications to the installer.

Once you have the plug-in installed, you can open GIMP right up and start playing around with it. The menu is located conveniently in the Xtns part of the menu under “Batch process…”. From there you will be brought up to a tabbed menu that shows you all of your options.

The first of these options is the “Input” tab, which will allow you to add images to your batch. Be careful with this one, as the “add files” pop-up covers up the tabbed interface and does not actually indicate that it is adding the files when you select them. You’ll have to look at the input tab again to confirm that your files were added (just one of the eccentricities of homemade software).

Next, you’ll want to indicate how you wish to resize the image. Click the “Resize” tab and select “Enable.” If you want to maintain the ratio of height to width, select “Relative” (the most common). If you want to make exact changes to the height and width, which will distort pictures but may be good for editing objects that are of a uniform pattern, select “Absolute.”

I’m going to scale them using the Relative setting and bring them down by 65 percent. As you can see above, the scale starts out at 1.00 (representing 100 percent size) and moves up and down by decimal points. You could click “Start” now, but you want to do one more thing.

Tab over to the “Rename” pane and look at your options. First of all, you can choose where the files come from and where they end up. The default is “same as source. Personally, I like to add on a modifier to each file’s name so that I end up with the size clearly labeled on each version of an image. As you can see, I’ve put a postfix of “_65″ into the form so it will append that to the new filenames. It even provides a sample.

Now you can hit “Start” and generate all the files you’ve set up. I ran this for two different sizes and got three sizes in total for my trouble: Original, 75%, and 65% (see image at the top of the page). Now if I were to write an article I’d have different sized images for whatever my page layout required. It should be noted that if you want your final files to match the file type of your originals, you’ll need to use the “Output” tab to choose the file type.

This is an incredibly handy tool for any blogger, especially if you do software or game reviews and have to play around with bulky screenshots from time to time. Definitely put in the small amount of effort it takes to install this plug-in and you’ll realize it’s worth its weight in digital gold.
