Gunslingers are quick on the draw with their favorite hand. We geeks are fast with keyboard shortcuts and mouse-clicks. When it comes to using the mouse, the right-click context menu is a powerhouse of productivity.

If tweaked right, it is definitely a shortcut to saving time. We have featured quite of lot of posts that help you modify and tweak your right-click context menu. You can drop down to the bottom of this article and take a look at those. But for now, let’s look at one productivity option you mistakenly might leave for the last.

Though, not if you are an image lover; quickly previewing your images with a right click is a good move if want to save a click or two. Previewing images is a time-saver from within dialog boxes too like the File Open box. Here are three image tools for your right-click context menu.

XnView Shell Extension

XnView Shell Extension v3.10 is a handy Windows Explorer enhancement if you want to add a few cool image tools to your right-click menu. We had taken a look at the full-featured XnView image viewer and converter before. The shell extension as a 963 KB download for Windows is a smaller sub-set of the image tools available on the XnView website.

The XnView Shell Extension adds a lot of viewing and image conversion options to the right click menu. What’s good is that it keeps its own group and does not clutter the menu.

Get image information: Includes data like resolution, image size, and depth with a right click along with the thumbnail preview.

Covert and Save: Quick convert and convert to a large number of image formats. You can also set the size of the converted image.

Edit IPTC meta-data: Agreed that The International Press Telecommunications Council’s set of standards for information interchange wouldn’t benefit the average user. But if you are a photo journalist or a photo blogger then this utility should be a must.

Upload to ImageShack: You can upload to the public server of photo hosting website with a single click.

Set Wallpaper: Something tells me that the average user would be using this option after previewing an image thumbnail.

You can go into the Options and switch off (or on) the choices you want displayed for the shell extension. For instance, you can set the size of the preview thumbnail and you can also associate an external image program.

FirmTools Shell Extension

This little freebie hasn’t been updated in a while but FirmTools Shell Extension still does the job that’s asked of it. At 511 KB the image previewer is smaller than XnView Shell extension. It lacks the meta-data editing features, but gives you the added print functionality.

Here are the salient features

Convert and Save: The FirmTools Converter quickly helps you to convert an image to any of the formats available in the dropdown.

Configure Thumbnail Preview: You can go into the settings and change the size of the thumbnail preview to predefined size or a custom one.

FastPreview

FastPreview is my personal choice because I am less of a meta-data guy and more of a viewer. FastPreview v.3.1 is the heftiest download at 3 MB. But importantly it gives you one feature that you want right after the thumbnail preview in the context menu.

Full Size Preview: FastPreview gives you the usual right-click thumbnail preview alright, but you can also click on the thumbnail to get a full-sized actual resolution look in an image viewer. No external program needs to be associated with FastPreview. Right-clicking on the image viewer again reveals a few more tools you can use.

Configure Thumbnail Preview: You can set the size of the thumbnails. As you can also see FastPreview supports 32 image formats.

Windows lacks a Mac like Quick Look feature for rapid fire image previews. Sometimes, the folder thumbnails don’t really help. These three context menu enhancements fill the gap. Which one would you pick and why?

There are other ways of course to take control of your work with the right-click context menu:

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/0_thme.jpg">Have you ever attempted to take a screenshot of a video? If you’ve ever wanted to show someone the quality of a video (without actually sending them the entire video) or create an Internet meme from a still image in a movie, screenshots can be useful. However, they can be quite difficult to take at times, as traditional methods tend to not always work. Sure, you can use a screenshot program to do the trick, or even VLC player’s built-in option, but if you’re looking to take multiple screenshots this can be tedious. Isn’t there a simpler way to automate the process?

Thumbnail Me offers a solution for those of us who would like to have the ability to automate making thumbnails from videos. With this application, you can create thumbnails of different frames within a video file quickly and easily.

What Is Thumbnail Me?

Thumbnail me is a free and open source thumbnail generator. It’s cross-platform (Windows XP/Vista/7 and Linux, but not Mac…sorry!) and it creates images of videos and provides the option to upload them to ImageShack. Thumbnail Me is coded in C++ and uses the Qt 4.7 library which is why it is capable of running on both Windows and Linux based operating systems.

Thumbnail me also works with a wide range of video types, including AVI, MKV, TS, M2TS, MPEG, MPG, Mp4, VOB, WMV, OGG, 3GP, MOV, FLV, and SWF.

How Do I Use Thumbnail Me?

If you’re ready to get started with Thumbnail Me, the first thing you’re going to want to do is head over to the website and download the application.

Once you install and run the app, you can begin by selecting a source, output folder, etc. Then enter a title and any other information you would like to be included with your file(s).

You can also select an image format for your thumbnail generation. Available formats include JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF. Optionally, you can log in with your ImageShack account for uploading the generated thumbnail images to the service as well.

Thumbnail Me also gives you the option to preview the potential thumbnail image before generating it. When you’re ready to proceed, just click the Launch button. Your video screens will be created instantly.

Conclusion

When taking screenshots of videos the most common use that comes to mind (at least as far as I’m concerned) is torrents. When seeking out a torrent of a video or movie (one that’s being shared legally of course!), it helps to be able to view screen captures of the footage before committing to download it, as these types of files tend to be rather large and can take a long time to download. It’s also a good way to tell if you are downloading the right file, especially if you’re having difficulty remembering the title.

Thumbnail Me is a pretty versatile application that supports a number of different parameters. If you are ever in need of a video screenshot application, Thumbnail Me is a tool that is more than capable in suiting your needs.

Let us know in the comments what you think of it. Or maybe you know of a better alternative?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/wordpress-logo-300x300.png">Featured Images were introduced into WordPress in version 2.9, and it enables you to easily display an image that’s associated with your blog post in various parts of your theme.

For an obvious example, check out the MakeUseOf homepage, where the featured image is used to make an otherwise dull list really pop out. Not only does this obviously improve the aesthetics of your blog, it also makes it more likely that readers will pay attention to the content. Visual cues are always better.

Today I’d like to show you how to use featured images in your WordPress blog. I’ll show you how to add and assign the image to your post as well as the code you’ll need to integrate them into your theme.

Setting Featured Images

If your theme supports it, you should see a Featured Image option on your post edit screen.

Click that to open the usual file upload pop-up, but instead of clicking Insert into Post, select Use As Featured Image instead.

Close the pop-up and you should now see your featured image added to the sidebar to indicate you were successful.

Don’t worry about the size for now, we can adjust that later through the WordPress options.

No Featured Image Button?

If you don’t see the link in your sidebar, it’s quite likely your theme doesn’t support them. No worries, we can fix that. You’ll need to log into FTP – or use the built-in WordPress file manager if your folder permissions allows you to – and locate your theme folder. This will be in the wp-content/themes/yourtheme, where yourtheme is the name of the theme you are using. Open that up and take a look at the files in there.

Look for the file called functions.php and open it up in your favourite text editor. Scroll to the end of the file, and just before the closing ?>, add the following line:

  add_theme_support('post-thumbnails');

Remember, make sure you do this just before or on the line before the closing PHP tag. So the end of your file should now look something like:

  add_theme_support('post-thumbnails');?>

Refresh the post edit screen and you should be able to now set a featured image.

What About All My Previous Posts? Do I Have To Edit Them All Again?

No. There’s a handy plugin called Generate Thumbnails that can handle the tedium of setting featured thumbnails on old posts really easily. After you’ve installed, just find the new link on your Tools menu and click the button to set the images. Obviously, if you don’t have images on your posts in the first place, you can’t automatically set any.

Add The Thumbnail To Your Theme:

I’ll be using my newest blog Self Sufficiency Guide to demonstrate, so head on over there to see the results – using a theme called Nature_wdl which you can download here. By default it doesn’t support any kind of post thumbnails, so I’ve had to first edit the functions.php to include that line. The basic design of the homepage is fine, but I’d like it to show just a list of articles with a featured thumbnail next to them, instead of the entire post content.

If you followed my WordPress tutorial last week, I showed you how the basic theme structure works. Since there’s neither a home.php nor front-page.php for this theme, the front page will be handled by index.php, so let’s open it up and take a look:

<div class="post" id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>">
                <div class="post-top">
                    <div class="post-title">
                        <h2><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php if ( function_exists('the_title_attribute')) the_title_attribute(); else the_title(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h2>

                </div>
			</div>

Luckily, this theme is really well coded, so adjusting it should be no problem. Before adding the thumbnail, I want to make sure only a small excerpt of the post is being shown, instead of the entire post content. Find the line that says:

<?php the_content('Read the rest of this entry &raquo;'); ?>

On a different theme, it may just say the_content(). Simply replace it with:

<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

Now if you reload, you’ll see that only a short paragraph snippet is shown, rather than the entire content.

Next, to add the thumbnail, let’s just see what happens if we just add in a single line directly above, like so:

<?php the_post_thumbnail();?>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

It’s a little ugly, but straight away with just one line of code we’ve added the associated image to the homepage! Fantastic! To make it a little more attractive, let’s try floating the image to the left, and cutting it down to the default thumbnail size like this:

<?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail',array('style'=>'float:left;'));?>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

The syntax is a little complicated in there, but you should be able to see where you can insert your own CSS if you wish. For instance, to add a right margin:

<?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail',array('style'=>'float:left;margin-right:10px;'));?>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

I’d say that’s pretty impressive for 30 minutes work!

Adjusting the Thumbnail Size:

You may find the default size of 150×150 is a little too big for your site. To adjust this, enter your WordPress admin and find Settings -> Media on the left hand side. Here you can change the size of your thumbnails. A word of warning though: this will only change future uploads, not your existing images, so don’t be surprised when nothing happens. There is however a helpful plugin called Regenerate Thumbnails which can automatically run through all your existing images and size them up right.

I hope this shows you just how incredibly flexible the WordPress system is and how you can easily adjust a theme code without any experience of PHP programming. In times past, adding this kind of functionality could have taken days. The best way to learn is to experiment though, so be sure to read up on the codex and stay tuned, as next time I’ll show you how to make your own widget for the sidebar that highlights a random post using its featured image. Stay tuned!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/preview-thumbnails.jpg/>Browsing image search engines has been the major source of inspiration to me. It is amazing how much creative work is stored and searched online.

This post will hopefully make your web image searching and browsing even more fun: the three addons listed will let you easily zoom the image thumbnails in to quicker choose one from search results.

Let’s see how we can quickly preview thumbnails in search results, download any image in its original size and preview your contacts’ Facebook photos right from your dashboard:

Thumbnail Zoom

Thumbnail Zoom is a fun addon that lets preview thumbnail pictures on Facebook, Twitter, Google Picasa, DeviantART, PhotoBucket, Flickr, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, YouTube, Google Images and a few other popular services Any supported site can be enabled or disabled using the toolbar menu and the addon settings dialog.

The addon also adds an extra context right-click menu item that allows to download the enlarged image without ever opening it.

The options panel lets you disable any of the supported services as well as set the delay before displaying the image and its opacity:

Cool Previews

CoolPreviews is the multi-feature FireFox addon that lets you preview any linked content including images. The image preview panel enables you to:

Zoom the image in or out;

Open the linked image in the separate tab;

Email the current link;

Play all the images on the page in the slideshow (works especially well for popular image search services like Flickr, Google Images, etc)

You can also turn previews on/off on specific sites anytime by clicking the icon on the status bar (or for those who have no status bar in FireFox 4, the same settings can be accessed in Tools -> Addons). CoolPreviews will memorize your settings.

The “Settings” dialog lets you customize your image previewing experience in many ways:

Set when you want the preview panel to appear: on mouse-over, on clicking the CoolPreviews icon, on mouse-over + CTRL key;

Set the location of the preview panel (relative to the cursor or the link);

Control the speed (how fast you want the preview panel to appear)

Set the theme (dark or ice);

Additional fun features:

Temporarily bookmark images to the right column with  “stacks” feature;

Scroll Google Image search results on an “infinite 3D Wall” (Cooliris addon required).

Preview multiple thumbnails simultaneously without (mouse over subsequent images on a page while the preview window is open or pinned).

Obviously, there’s no point in using the above two addons simultaneously, so you should pick one.

Facebook PhotoZoom

Facebook PhotoZoom only works for Facebook, but I am sure most of the readers frequent the site, so they’ll find the addon very useful. The tool works as a magnifier for Facebook thumbnails (both profile pictures and album photos): when you hover over a thumbnail, a tooltip will appear with the bigger image in it.

They have a few reported issues (some people experience problems making it work on Windows), but I’ve had no such issues.

Do you have any more tips for better thumbnail preview in FireFox? Are you aware of any similar tools for other browsers?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/ScreenCapture07.png" />When you work on or with the web, you often have to take screenshots or videos of what you’re doing. You may need to make a copy of a website for your documents, capture a process for a presentation, or simply prepare images for an article you’re writing. Rather than installing yet another nifty tool, you can handle all your screenshot and screen recorder needs online.

Here are 3 different online screen capture services — 2 for still images and one for recording your screen.

1. Capture Full Page

The motto of the site is Take Screenshot on the Fly. There is no registration required.

The application allows you to select the dimension, size, and format after it captured the website for you. Since a full size screenshot is taken before you can downsize, the process takes a little longer. Once it’s done you will see the screenshot on the left and a menu on the right. The options for dimensions are top screen or full screen, the size can be anything from full to extra small, and the available output formats are JPEG (smaller file size) and PNG (better quality). Clicking > View will give you a preview in your browser and by selecting > Download you receive the file.

2. Super Screenshot

Super Screenshot is much faster than Capture Full Page, although it essentially works the same, minus the fancy layout.

After the screen was captured, you can select dimensions, size, and format. Before you view the screenshot you can also refresh it.

3. ScreenToaster

ScreenToaster is a free online screen recorder that allows you to capture videos of what’s happening on your monitor, independent of your operating system. Quite obviously, this tool is perfect for pre-recorded screencasts or tutorials. To use it you have to register. You also need to enable Java for whichever browser you’re going to use.

Once you’re logged in, click the > Start Recording button and the application will launch. You can then select which portion of the screen you want to capture and whether sound and webcam should be recorded as well. When you decide to make a screencast of only a small section of your screen, yo ucan drag a black rectangular to the desired location. Hit > Record to start. The key combination > [ALT] + [S] will both start and pause recording. This is useful when the website is in the background as you need to bring it to the foreground to stop the recording.

Here is an excellent YouTube review of ScreenToaster by iComputerHacker:

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/stw3.png" />Human beings are very visual creatures by nature. If you had to choose between a pile of plain text or some text and images, it goes without saying that you would choose the latter option anytime.

The same applies to the links on your website.

Here at MakeUseOf, we use an online service called ShrinkTheWeb. It’s a website screenshot thumbnail service that allows us to easily add a thumbnail to for any website. You can see it in action in our daily Cool Websites and Tools series.

So say you have written a website review or you have inserted a link to a site on your blog. Wouldn’t it look much better with a small thumbnail image of that site next to the link? Of course it would. It can be especially handy for list style articles, just like MakeUseOf’s Cool Websites and Tools.

Add ShrinkTheWeb Website Thumbnails To WordPress

To automate things and make our life easier, we use their WordPress plugin. The plugin is specifically helpful for those who plan to use the ShrinkTheWeb thumbnails on a regular basis.

As you can see from the above screenshot apart from generating thumbnails it can also add small mouse-over popup previews to external links on your website.

If you don’t want to bother with the plugin, you can easily and quickly generate multiple sizes of a website screenshot, simply by inserting the URL on the front page of ShrinkTheWeb.

To make an image of a website page, just look at the bottom of the STW website and you’ll see a box entitled “Generate a Screenshot“. Simply enter the URL and hit the green arrow button. As an example, we will use the MakeUseOf site.

Seconds later, you’ll have quite a few sizes (there are six default sizes). There are no advertisements or watermarks on the thumbnails.

Then it’s just a case of right-clicking on the size you want and saving the image to your hard drive.

But if you have a WordPress blog, it gets even easier. Just install their plugin and everytime you want to insert a thumbnail of a website, just enter in the HTML tab of your post,

[thumb]enter the domain name here[/thumb]

The thumbnail image will then be automatically generated when you save the post.

There are also plugins for Drupal, vBulletin and Django.

There are many reasons why you might want to use ShrinkTheWeb:

Having thumbnail images means your readers can see where weblinks lead to and they can decide instantly whether they want to go there or not. This is good for NSFW (not safe for work) links.

It makes your webpage much nicer to look at. Who wants to look at a bunch of boring plain text when you can have pictures instead?

Remember the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Well, if you’re struggling to convey the point of a website, show your readers a picture instead. Problem solved.

Increase the chances of someone clicking on your links. I am more likely to click on a link if I see a picture next to it. Pictures pique my curiosity.

The service is free but they do offer an optional paid pro service as well. Check out this page to see what you get with the pro option. Personally I think most people will be perfectly happy with the free offerings.

Do you use ShrinkTheWeb? If so, what do you think about it? Or maybe you use a super-duper alternative service that you would like to tell us about? Lets us know in the comments.

Text is boring. A thumbnail standing in for a line of text helps to visualize what the information is all about. In the age of visual search engines and visual computing, thumbnails (or thumbshots) are all over the place.

Thumbnails as “˜Tom Thumbs’ of the real thing allow us to pack in more within the screen real estate. The ideal size of a thumbnail differs with use and the setting. Ideally, a scaled down but recognizable version of the real thing can be called as a thumbnail. For instance, Flickr generally uses 240 pixel-wide images.

There’s no end to the utility of thumbnails. From illustrations to photo galleries, they are thumbed for the bigger picture.

How do we go about creating thumbnails? Well, it’s easy as cherry pie (eating it”¦ not baking!) with all the options on our thumb, err hands. I’ll be showing you the mechanical approach, as well as 4 free thumbnail generators in both Software and Online format. You have the freedom to choose which method you wish to use!

The Mechanical Path

Not the easiest but definitely the cheapest as we can work without spending a penny, using what we already have ““ the PrtSc (Print Screen) key and MS Paint.

Open the document/webpage/object you want to take a thumbnail of. Resize it by dragging the edges to set the area for the image.

Press the PrtSc key ““ the image is in the clipboard now. Alternatively, pressing Alt-PrtSc takes a snapshot of the active document or object only.

Open MS Paint (All Programs ““ Accessories ““ Paint). Click on Edit ““ Paste to paste the image from the clipboard as a new Paint document.

On the Menu, click on Image – Stretch/Skew Image.

Choose a percentage figure to resize the image ““ for the same proportions, enter equal percentage for horizontal and vertical stretch.

With the desired size, click on File ““ Save As. Save the file in a format of choice.

MS Paint can be substituted with the better image editors with enhanced image resizing controls (Example: Using Actions in Photoshop). For more demanding needs, we need to turn to the various free thumbnail generators that are available.

The Software Path

Easy Thumbnails

This 1MB software lives up to its name. The graphical interface is simple and it makes creating scaled down graphics a user-friendly task. The best thing about this free thumbnail generator is the batch processing feature.

Select an individual image file or an entire folder. Setting the rotation, brightness, contrast and size of your images is easy through helpful sliders. A unique feature for such a freeware is the range of compression settings provided which lets you reduce the file sizes; vital for a large number of web images. And the image window lets you preview (in real time) the thumbnail’s final look.

Easy Thumbnails runs on XP / XP64 / Vista / Vista64 / Windows 7 or on Mac OS / Linux in conjunction with Wine.

RightThumb

RightThumb is a tiny (398KB) context menu application which lets you create optimized thumbnails with a right click. Creating a thumbnail from any graphic file needs just a right click and choosing the option to ‘Create Thumbnail’. The program does not need to be installed which makes it ideal as a portable app too. To handle multiple images, just select all the images and right click.

With RightThumb, a thumbnail can be created as a Bitmap, JPEG, GIF or PNG graphic file or can be copied to clipboard, ready to paste. The only feature lacking are the image editing settings.

RightThumb runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista.

If you are looking for a free desktop variant for the Mac then take a look at Paparazzi! which takes screenshots with the option of thumbnails.

But what if you are on a public computer without these software on the PC? Then, we must look towards the internet.

The Online Path

Quick Thumbnail

It’s as simple as uploading an image (or providing a URL), choosing the resize options and downloading the thumbnail image. As added security, uploaded files are kept on the Quick Thumbnail server for only 10 minutes.

Use a slider to resize by percentage or choose absolute measures in figures. Fixed size choices range from 32 pixels to 750 pixels. Images can also be scaled by using a drop-down list of standard dimensions like 100×75 for avatars and 150×112 for thumbnails. Added options include basic filter settings and watermark inclusion.

Resizr

Resizr, like most image manipulation web apps has been designed keeping the unsophisticated designer in mind. Image resizing is free, requires no registration and also comes with some added options. The screenshot shows the options available. The slider easily lets you set the optimum size between small and big. Resized files can be saved as JPEG, GIF or PNG. The final image can be downloaded, forwarded to < a href=”http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/”>Facebook or MySpace, sent to a cell via MMS (US only) or simply emailed.

There are other web apps of such ilk which make the thumbnail creation and image manipulation a snap. At MakeUseof, we have covered some of them over the course of a few posts such as WebSnapr: Free Website Thumbnail Screenshots and Thumbalizr: Website Screenshots.

Also read an earlier post by Kaly which started out by reviewing Resizr but soon jumped into other exciting apps.

Thumbnail creation by itself is something that any good image manipulation program can handle. It is about paying attention to the proportions and the quality. Which is your web app/software of choice? Do you use a dedicated application or an all purpose image viewer/graphics program? Share your experiences with us in the comments.

Have you ever opened one too many tabs in your Firefox browser before? I’ll be the first to say that I do this all the time. So if you’re anything like me you’re probably tired of having to shuffle through your tabs like a deck of cards trying to find the right one you’re searching for.

Annoyed and overwhelmed by tabs one can say that it would be easier to have some sort of “mediator” between you and your Firefox tabs so that you don’t go mad and close them altogether. How about the addont to preview Firefox tabs as thumbnails. This is where Firefox Showcase steps in, an application I came across which helps you do just that.

Managing your Tabs

This new Firefox tab preview addon compatible with all Firefox versions 1.5-3.2a1 pre allows you to quickly summon a window that shows you your tabs in thumbnail sizes so that you’re able to scroll through the tabs you need. This way you won’t need to second guess on a tab before opening it. You’ll just need to take one look at the tab thumbnail and know exactly which one you need. This saves you both browsing time and hair, as you won’t have to tear it out due to Firefox frustrations.

How it all Works

1. First you’ll need to download Firefox Showcase.

2. Once you’ve downloaded, installed, and restarted your browser you can click on the tools scroll down menu in your browser window, find add-ons, and select the options button in Firefox Showcase.

3. Now you’re ready to customize the way your tab manager works and views. You can tell the browser that you want the single showcase window to display your tabs in 200 pixel thumbnails or even smaller/larger sizes. You can also choose where you want your showcase window to display and how you’d like it to show you your tabs. These are just a few of the options and features that Firefox Showcase offers.

4. As soon as you’ve configured your new add-on you can find the button in the top right side of your browser window with the arrow pointing down, click on this button and instantly view all of your tabs in thumbnails.

Larger thumbnails:

Quick Overview

Once you’ve installed Firefox Showcase all you have to do is click on the thumbnail of the tab you want, and it’ll open up automatically. You can also right click on thumbnails to perform other tasks such as bookmark a page or send a page as a link.

You’re also able to select multiple thumbnails by left clicking and holding down the Control key [Ctrl]. The scroll ball on your mouse can be used to scroll through thumbnails. Use Control-F in Showcase to use the find bar and quickly search through thumbnails with keywords.

If you have any comments or suggestions regarding this feature please feel free to comment below! Any other great Firefox tab preview addons? Please share them in comments!

Image hosting sites such as Flickr or Photobucket are still far and away a couple of the most popular of their kind on the web. However, as much traffic as they receive, the most popular way of searching the web quickly for a particular photo or graphic, is Google Image Search.

However, Google’s implementation of their product, although usable, feels very clunky and can be extremely cumbersome, combing through hundreds of thousands of images. Fortunately it seems like there is always another way with technology.

A strangely titled website called ‘Dear Computer’, takes the incredibly large index of Google Images and simply displays images only, nothing else. They have titled it ‘Google Image Ripper‘, and what it does is it removes the long drawn out process of individually clicking images through Google’s annoying search, and displays the file in its entirety.

Here is a comparison look:

Google’s Default Image Search of MakeUseOf:

Dear Computer’s Google Image Rip of MakeUseOf:

As you can see after submitting a search, you get many more images and a much easier interface, than you ever would with Google’s version. Once the images are displayed, you then have the ability to simply right-click on the file right from the screen, for easy saving and storage.

Along with the quick search and save feature, you also have some additional options to choose from while searching. You still have the option of choosing between sizes (small, medium, large and extra large) but also an additional ‘icon’ option as well.

Now let’s take a look at the search box. Here is where you can select your image size, safe content option or even look for ‘faces only’.

Along with the website, I have incorporated Firefox’s built-in keyword searching as well. If you bookmark this link- Google Image Ripper – you can simply type ‘im insert image name here‘ and you’ll quickly see Image Ripper’s display of images.

There isn’t much else to this web app, but I find myself using it on almost a daily basis, particularly for icons and smaller images. It also comes in handy when you would like screen shots of a particular application for a blog posting or software review. You may not find a use for it yourself, but just try it out anyway. It’s incredibly fast and of course free to use.

Do you know of any similar online products?

I was helping a buddy of mine create his artist portfolio on the inter-webs. His digital pictures of his work were very large and would all need to be resized to thumbnails and medium sized images. So today’s article is going to be a two for one. For this article we are working with Windows Only tools. Two great free tools to help us get the job done quickly and efficiently. Ready?

Our artist thought he was going to have to do all the sizing and resizing manually because they needed to be various different sizes, depending on their dimensions.

He was used to using that little check box in PhotoShop that says “Constrain Proportions”.

This magic box allows you to approximately resize an image allowing it to retain its original shape.

My artist friend was under the impression that Photoshop had some uber magic that does this and it couldn’t be done any other way. Instead of going into Photoshop Actions, I downloaded for him a tiny itty bitty application called FotoSizer. I am going to show you how we can quickly resize a whole bunch of images for the web.

But first I downloaded a second FREE application to create our thumbnails. (Yes all of this can be done in Photoshop but with A LOT more work – and these apps are FREE. Did I mention that they are free??)

I grabbed Easy Thumbs from here and fired her up:

I pointed it at my source folder and quickly checked my settings:

I hit the “Make All” button at the bottom and my thumbnails went into production. What an awesome feeling; like you have thousands of little people inside your computer churning out your images!

Now I opened up FotoSizer and pointed it at the correct folder containing my original HUGE images. The original images were in the area 2600×2200 but there were images in that folder that were already sized, I didn’t want these images touched.

I decided I wanted the re-sized images to be close to 1024×768, maintaining aspect ratio (constrain proportions), and the option to not enlarge if smaller.

I chose my output folder and left the file name mask untouched. I hit the Start button and away we go!

In under 10 minutes I had all my images sized properly for the site. And now I could properly spend my time helping him design his site and get it online.

Not only did I get the job done quickly, I showed him two awesome free applications and now he can create the images for his site on his own!

Now all I need to do is show him how to use DreamWeaver…

Wish me luck! Do you have a favorite tool that does both of these jobs quickly? Let us know in the comments!
