Have you ever been in a situation where you suspect someone has been using your computer, but you just aren’t certain who is doing it and what they’re actually doing when they’re logged in? This situation comes up more often than you might suspect – whether it’s a shared computer in a dorm room, a home, or an office. The computer use may be completely innocent, or the person may actually be trying to poke around your personal files to discover private information about you. You really don’t know.

There are lots of solutions for PC usage monitoring and logging, and we’ve covered a lot of them here at MUO. We’ve even offered a giveaway of the Elite Keylogger before, and I’ve written a few articles on ways that you can monitor how your employees or your family members are using your computers. They are still good solutions, but after coming across iSpy, thanks to Matt’s awesome review of the free webcam surveillance software, I realized that there’s an even better solution than anything I’ve ever covered before.

Use iSpy to Track What Others Do On Your Computer

Why is iSpy the best solution? Well, if you’ve followed how most of the webcam surveillance systems that we’ve reviewed work, they typically watch the camera area for movement, and whenever any activity takes place, the system jumps into action in whatever manner you’ve told it to. This can include recording the video, sending an email, or even launching an application.

The iSpy Camera Security Software does all of that – just as Matt described. However, there is something else that it does that I’m very excited about – it provides a powerful feature where you can set up a remote view of a computer desktop, just like you’d remotely view a webcam, and capture all movement on that screen.

To do that, once you install iSpy, just click the “Add” button and select the “VLC Camera Source” option.

You’ll need to choose from a variety of camera sources. The magic one is the “Desktop” tab on this screen. Choose the display that you want to monitor, the frame interval and what view size you want to resize the desktop to when you view it remotely. To set this up on remote PCs that you want to monitor, you’ll need to install the iSpy Server software, rather than the full-blown version of iSpy.

So, here I’ve installed the desktop camera to monitor all activity that takes place on the other monitor that I have set up. Here’s that monitor displayed in my “webcam” view inside the iSpy software. As you can see the live screen is marked at the upper right with the current date and time.

You could simply watch the screen remotely if you want to see what the person is doing there, but obviously that would take a lot of time and patience. And, if you’re more interested in seeing what’s going on at your PC when you’re gone, then you’re going to want to set up iSpy on a different PC to monitor your computer when you’re not around.

When you add the desktop webcam, you have to go through a few steps to set up that automatic “motion sensor” monitoring feature. The first tab is the camera tab where you’ll set up the recording frame rate. If you don’t have a lot of space to save recordings, just cut back on the “when recording” framerate. If you want to hear what’s going on as well, then yes, you can even activate the microphone (using the add button) and then “pair it” on this tab.

The Motion Detection tab is where you set up the sensitivity of motion when you want to start recording what’s going on at the screen. Also, if you want to monitor the motion over just a smaller portion of the screen, you can create a “detection zone” by drawing a box around that area.

The “Alerts” tab is where you’re going to configure the behavior of how the application monitors motion. Change mode to “movement” and then select how many seconds of movement there should be before recording begins.

That screen is also where you can select a program to execute in the “Execute file” field.

Then, on the “Recording” tab, you set up exactly how the app records. This is where you set how many seconds inactivity will last before recording stops.

The coolest part of this application is its ability to automatically FTP the files to any FTP account you have set up. This makes it easy for you to monitor the activity from anywhere at all. The software will FTP the files and you can access them from anywhere.

If you don’t want to focus on the motion feature, but instead want to see what people are doing on your PC during certain times of the day, you can enable the “scheduling” feature of iSpy on the “Scheduling” tab. Just set the days and the times you want to record, and let iSpy go to work recording all activity on that PC for you.

The videos are all stored in mp4 format. Here’s a 10 minute video I captured of someone using my computer to search YouTube for “crazy stunts”. Those silly kids…

As you can see, iSpy goes well beyond your typical keylogging or screenshot applications that most people use to monitor computer usage. iSpy actually lets you record a screencast of every movement and every action that the user makes on that PC.

Give the screen recording feature of iSpy a shot and see what kind of interesting things you capture on your computers. Did you catch anyone trying to do anything they shouldn’t be doing on your computer? Share your thoughts and insights in the comments section below.

Not too long ago, I outlined a couple of steps in this article on how to protect yourself from a virus should you decide not to run any antivirus software on your system.

However, let’s say that you did follow all those steps like a good person and you still ended up getting infected, as you probably noticed once an antivirus tool you never installed suddenly tells you your computer is about to self-destruct. Well, that’s just great. So how do you remove such a virus from your computer?

There’s hope and solutions on offer. So, read on.

Use Microsoft Safety Scanner

Microsoft offers a tool that can remove certain kinds of malicious software. That tool used to be the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, but recently Microsoft is offering the Microsoft Safety Scanner. This scanner is supposed to check your computer for any viruses, spyware, and other bad stuff and remove it.

There are plenty of other similar online scanners, but some may lead you to actually downloading more malware on your system rather than removing it. By using Microsoft’s tool, you can be sure that it genuinely wants to remove any malware from your system.

Install Antivirus Software

Although you probably should’ve had it installed before to make use of its real-time protection, it might be helpful to install an antivirus tool now to help remove the malware that is currently wreaking havoc on your system. An antivirus tool can also scan for any other files that have dormant viruses in them, waiting for you to activate them. There are plenty of free ones that are very effective, such as AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Avast, just to name a few. These tools will hopefully be able to remove that pesky virus before it does too much harm.

Search the Internet For Possible Solutions

While it’s not recommended to use the internet when you know you’re infected with a virus (as the virus could potentially start sending out any information it’s finding on your system), you can use a clean system to go online and search for the virus that you may have (based on the symptoms your computer is experiencing) and how you can possibly remove it. With some luck, you might find a solution that has been tested and proven to work.

Reinstall Windows

Last but not least, if all else fails, reinstall Windows or move to any other operating system such as Linux. If the virus is really that pesky, it’s best to just help Windows destroy itself so that you can rebuild on the ashes. Before you begin with your reinstallation, don’t forget to backup your data. Please, scan all the files that you’re backing up so that you don’t accidentally save the virus you’re trying to get rid of and then reinfect yourself later. It’s a long and hard process and is therefore the ultimate last resort, but at least this method works every time.

Don’t Buy A New Computer!

I’ve come across enough people who think that if their computer gets infected with a virus, the world is going to end and they’ll need to dump the infected computer and buy a brand new one. This is absolutely not true, as the hardware is still perfectly in tact. Reinstalling Windows is like resetting the system, and gets rid of the virus in the process. There’s no need to go out and spend $400+ for a decent new computer just because you got infected with a virus.

Conclusion

Getting rid of a virus is sometimes easy and sometimes very tricky. Your level of success will vary depending on the bug you managed to catch. However, there is always one way or another to get rid of a virus. We just hope that it doesn’t have to be very destructive to your own data. Just remember, when it comes to viruses and protection, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What’s the worst virus you’ve managed to catch? What other tips would you add to this article? Let us know in the comments!

In an ideal world, we’d all be able to keep our computers secure from unauthorized access. That’s not the world we live in however. Roommates snoop, significant others get curious, and family members decide to check up on each other – without permission.

If you suspect this is occurring, you can monitor your computer to see how it is being used when you’re away. Let’s look at some tools that will do just that.

Revealer Keylogger & AllInOne Keylogger

The easiest way to tell what someone is doing on your computer is to use a keylogger. As you likely already know, this is a piece of software that logs keystrokes, which can then be retrieved later. You will be able to obtain information about what keystrokes we activated, thus providing an activity history.

If you’d like to stick with free solutions, Revealer Keylogger is a good choice. This utility logs keystrokes accurately and also records the process in which the keystrokes were logged as well as the time. The software can also be hidden from the user. It’s basic, but it works. Note that anti-malware software may quarantine this tool upon download, so you’ll need to remove the quarantine before you can install it.

Want more features and options? Then you’re going to have to go paid. One of the better options is AllInOne Keylogger, which captures keystrokes like any other, but has advanced log filtering options and the ability to send logs to specified email addresses, FTP servers or networked computers automatically. In addition, this software can take screenshots and record sounds via microphone. You can use this option free for seven days, but it’s $69.95 afterwards.

SurveliStar Activity Monitor

Keylogging can pick up a lot of information, but sorting through it to make sense of web activity can be a pain. SurveliStar Activity Monitor provides a easier and more comprehensive way to track web activity.

Once activated, SurveliStar can pick up on a number of online activities including web browsing, file transfers, and emails. These are then logged for later review. The log are very detailed particularly where web browsing is concerned. Everything is picked up including web use through extensions, plugins, etc.

Surprisingly, this software is free. You only need to pay for enterprise use of the software, which starts at $69.95.

iSpy – Automatic Webcam Recording

Let’s say that unauthorized computer use is just the beginning of your problems. What if you’re also concerned about what’s going on around your computer? A keylogger or activity monitor can’t help you there.

That’s where iSpy comes in. This free, open source software has the ability to automatically record video with your webcam while you’re away. It has motion tracking and scheduling features that allow you to record only when you need to, and it also has the ability to automatically upload recorded video to the web, including YouTube. That’s handy because it allows for remote storage of video immediately, keeping it safe from any attempt to delete it.

Heck, you can even access your webcam remotely via the Internet while it’s recording and catch your roommate eating ice cream in your bed red-handed.

Conclusion

The tools above provide a complete pack for monitoring your PC. You can find out what was typed, what websites were visited, what files were downloaded, and what emails were sent. You can even see what’s going on in front of your computer remotely via your webcam.

Still, there may be an element here that I’ve missed, or software that readers prefer. If you have some advice on how to monitor activity on your PC, be sure to post in the comments.

Before I get started writing this article, I’m just going to say that Apple does a good job protecting its customers from malware, viruses, and various other mythical beasts on the internet. However, a lot of monitoring software still exists for Mac, and you should know about it, right?

I’m going to be honest with you in that I didn’t download any of these at all, and this was done for two reasons – they aren’t free, and I don’t trust them.

Just know that the first purpose of this article is to let you know that this enemy actually exists, and the second purpose is to help you know your enemy by name.

Spector Pro [Snow Leopard]

As a product of SpectorSoft, Spector Pro markets itself as a way to check in on the kids or make sure that your employees are staying on task. It even prides itself with its ability to block websites and specific contacts on instant messaging. However, we all know that this doesn’t mean people wouldn’t use it for malicious reasons. (As a note, the website also has some sketchy user testimonials anyway.)

Besides its basic run-of-the-mill keylogging methods, Spector Pro forwards all emails, transferred files, and screenshots to its primary operator (read: stalker). Also, like most keyloggers, the software will likely run in stealth mode if it is being used on you, so just keep that in mind. However, at the price of $99, the perpetrator would likely use it only if they had serious intentions.

SniperSpy [Snow Leopard]

SniperSpy is one of three spy-related pieces of software produced by Retina-X Studios. Once again, we have the typical explanation of “Watch your children!” and “Watch your employees!”. However, in addition to its basic functions of screenshot capturing, location mapping (based on the current IP) and keylogging, SniperSpy allows its operator to view everything that you are doing totally live in a VNC-like fashion.

Basically, as you are typing out your romantic messages to your hypothetical forbidden lover, your spouse could be watching you as it happens. Another feature allows for operators to send the computer user an onscreen message – perhaps something classic like, “All your base are belong to us.”

Aobo Keylogger [Snow Leopard & Lion]

Aobo claims that you can use the software to “spy and discover the truth” and “get back a stolen Mac”. This is perfectly fine and seemingly honest, but there is always the chance someone might have ulterior motives while using it. The website for this software is a little iffy, so just keep in mind its users could be equally so.

The software comes in two varieties – standard and pro – and both of them collect the standard information that any keylogger would. However, the professional version is noted for its ability to record passwords that are typed in-browser, and it claims to have been the first keylogger for Mac to do so. All logs (including screenshots, keystrokes, and websites) can be sent to the operator’s email or FTP.

Amac KeyLogger [Snow Leopard & Lion]

Much like the other monitoring programs mentioned in this article, Amac Keylogger requires the operator to install the software on the actual computer itself. Granted, this could always possibly be done remotely by a well-versed operator, but in the meantime, just reconsider who regularly plugs flash drives into your computer.

Amac Keylogger functions just as you would expect it would – it watches you do whatever you do, sending information of your activities to the mystery man behind another screen. Although it displays itself as employee monitoring software, it is easily exploitable. If you download it once, it monitors all user accounts on the Mac in question, and it always will open up in stealth mode on the user’s computer. Also, much like Aobo, the professional version of this software can record passwords.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that Apple does subtly protect its users from these Internet demons anyway, but if you want a basic method to combat keyloggers yourself, you should take a look at this MUO article – 4 Ways To Protect Yourself Against Keyloggers. Besides this, remember to always update your OS to prevent unintentional installation, and don’t be surprised that some people do not. Take this example – a close friend of mine who works primarily with Macs once knew someone who hadn’t done so since the day that they bought it!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/600-firefox-logo-shadow-300x300.jpg">If you should receive an email asking you to update to the latest version of Firefox with a handy link, please do not click it.

This is a scam attempted by some people who are targeting the most gullible of users (which is none of our readers are of course) into installing a backdoor Trojan that will log your passwords and possibly do unscrupulous things with them. Keep your passwords safe, and disregard this email should you receive it.

Users should always be aware that clicking links from unknown senders is not a good idea, and will generally lead to a negative result. Still it is worth warning about this one particular. Please remember that Firefox will update itself automatically, so if you ever receive an email or link telling you that your version of Firefox needs to be updated, please ignore it.

This email made the rounds this past weekend, and will probably continue to do so, so please be aware and delete it if you get one.

This is clearly one of the weaker attempts to get passwords, but there are people out there who will fall for such trickery. If you ever have a question about the validity of an email like this always refer to the official website. If you actually need to update to the latest version of Firefox do so here. (I promise, that is not a virus).

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/monitoringsoftware1.jpg">For most computer users, the word “spyware” is a bad word. The last thing most computer users want when they are surfing the web or doing their banking is someone “spying” on them. However, there are times when spyware can be a good thing. Technically, most companies today use what many people would call “spyware” to monitor employee Internet usage and overall productivity.

Parents of young children and teens often look for ways to ensure that their kids don’t get into trouble on the Internet, and many of those products are technically “spyware” as well. Sometimes the ability to monitor computer usage provides peace of mind and security that no level of antivirus software can offer. I’ve dealt with countless parents that come to me complaining that their teen did something to the computer that completely destroyed it. They have no idea what their own child did.

Using ExtraSpy to Monitor Your Home Computers

Here at MUO, we’ve covered a lot of ways to block spyware, such as MalwareBytes, Spyware Terminator, and other tools. However, finding free spyware apps that you actually want to install is a whole other story.

It isn’t easy to find remote monitoring software for free these days. Most companies use highly technical network monitoring software that not only has the ability to track and log how employees use the computer systems, but also include port scanning and other network analysis tools that go far beyond the needs of the home or small business user.

For your home network, you many only want to “spy” on a few computers to make sure that your kids aren’t getting themselves into trouble. One of the few, full-featured, free applications available that can do this is called ExtraSpy Employee Monitor.

When you install and run this software, just click on “settings” and you’ll see how fast and easy it is to set it up to connect to your clients automatically, or to constantly scan for newly installed clients.

The software comes with two simple executables – no installation required. To run the server, launch the server EXE file. To install a client, copy the client EXE to the client PC and run it.

In less than a minute, you’ll see the following window, which tells you that the client is running, and the IP address you can use to connect to it from the server app.

Go back to the server and click on the “Add Client” button. If it doesn’t show up automatically, just type the IP address into the right pane.

If the server is able to locate and connect to the client, it’ll show up on the main server window. It’ll also show the network name of the computer, as well as the IP and the connection status. If you’re having problems getting a good connection, make sure to check the firewall and antivirus software on the client PC to make sure that you’ve enabled an exception for the client software that’s running on that PC. To test if the antivirus is the problem, temporarily disable it to see if you get a connection.

Once you have a connection to your client PCs, there’s a whole lot of really cool stuff you can do. First, if you look at the bottom of the main window when you’ve selected a client PC, you’ll see all of the applications that the current user has open. This information also includes when the app was launched and whether the window is active.

If you want to see the user’s computer screen, just click on the screenshot icon, and a pop-up window will appear with a real-time snapshot of the client window.

If you want to watch action on the screen, you can get frequent screen updates by clicking on “Refresh Periodically” and enabling timed updates of the screenshot.

If you right click on the client in the list, you’ll see that you can also do some remote administration on these computers. These tools include remotely restarting, resetting or turning off each system.

The nice thing about the software is that you don’t have to sit there and monitor all of your clients manually. You can configure “Tasks” that send you activity reports via email at whatever interval you like.

The reports are fairly high quality reports that break down application usage by group, such as Internet browsers, instant messengers, productivity apps and more. You’ll also see a list of all of these groups and the associated time the user spent using each one.

One cool feature of the software is that you can send off messages to the client. This comes in handy for parents that want to impress on their kids that just because you’re not standing in the room, you’re still keeping an eye on computer use.

In past articles, when I’ve suggested that parents should monitor their kids’ Internet usage, a few readers took issue with the idea of the invasion of privacy. I think this can be true in some cases, and it’s important to use tools like this just do a quick spot check every now and then to ensure that kids are doing the right thing, for their own online safety. Privacy is important, but protecting your kids as well as your computer systems are important issues too. Checking in every now and then is perfectly okay.

So take the free ExtraSpy Employee Monitor software for a test drive and experience how easy it can be to monitor and manage all of your home client machines. Let us know what you like and don’t like about the software in the comments section below.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/phonesecuritythumb.png">Snooping on computers has been a problem for decades. The so-called Trojan Horse, malware that gives a hacker access to a PC without the owner’s permission, has been around since the 80′s. Keyloggers are another area of concern, and have been given some attention in the popular media from time to time. But whatever you call it, snooping on a PC is an accepted risk, and one users often look out for.

But what about your smartphone? Modern devices are essentially tiny PCs that also make phone calls, and the potential negative effects of Smartphone snooping could be much worse. Smartphones transmit location data and store lists of everyone you know, along with their phone numbers. Obviously, this information shouldn’t be in the wrong hands, but what can you do to prevent Smartphone snooping?

Monitor Permissions Carefully (Android)

If you’re using an Android smartphone you’ll be presented with a list of permissions every time you install a new app (iPhone users can move on to the next section). The permissions lists, in detail, the functions the app is looking to access on your phone. They range from fairly innocuous things such as SD card read/write access to more ominous features like the ability to read and edit your contacts.

I’d like to have a fast-and-easy rule for permissions, but there isn’t one. My best advice is to make sure the permissions make sense for the app. An app that enhances your contacts will obviously need access to contact data. That makes sense. But it might not make sense for the app to have access to your precise GPS location, unless there is some feature that requires it. If you’re hesitant, but you really want the app, try checking out the developer’s website or contacting the developer directly. Many will provide you with the reasons why their app needs various permissions.

Don’t assume that an app is on the level just because it is popular. Pandora, for example, was recently accused of acquiring data about users (including location, birthday and sex) via its app and then sending that data to ad servers.

Use A Data Monitor

One of the most obvious indications that something may be seriously wrong with your smartphone’s security is a sudden increase in data usage. Theoretically, malware and other Smartphone snooping software can do all sorts of things with your device without your knowledge. One recent proof of concept suggests that smartphone botnets could be just around the corner.

A data monitor can help you keep tabs on your data usage. There are too many such apps to do an in-depth review of them here. Personally, I like the RadioOpt Traffic Monitor for Android, but your mileage may vary.

It’s also wise to occasionally check your data usage through your carrier. Although a traffic monitor should discover any problems, it always possible that a threat could find a way to disguise itself. You should also consider an SMS text message monitor, if one is available for your mobile OS.

Install A Remote Phone Tracker & Data Nuker

As I’ve mentioned when discussing laptop security, physical theft of a mobile device can be a real security issue. Smartphones are even worse, because they’re easy to lose track of, and most users don’t even protect their device with a passphrase. It would be trivial for someone to access data on a phone once they have the physical phone.

However, smartphones do have an advantage over laptops. Virtually all of them have GPS, which means that it is easy to obtain the precise location of the device if it goes missing but remains turned on. In addition, smartphones have data connections that are always on unless specifically turned off, which means it is easy to send a remote wipe command.

There are multiple Android apps that offer this functionality – we recently looked at one example, called Mobile Defense. Apple’s iPhone offers similar functionality through the Find My iPhone feature.

Consider An Antivirus App

The antivirus field for mobile devices is still immature. Apple doesn’t even allow antivirus software on the iPhone, while Android’s antivirus market is saturated with lots of apps, many of which have frankly questionable credentials.

Even so, a quality antivirus app could have some use. At the very least, it should be able to point out phone settings that could compromise your security, and many antivirus apps bundle phone trackers as well. Antivirus should also be very effective, at least theoretically, because the app market used on mobile devices serves as a gateway to software. This makes it harder for malware to reintroduce itself into the app ecosystem once it is discovered.

The problem is that no one seems to know how to test these mobile antivirus apps yet. There’s no definitive, objective source providing data on mobile antivirus effectiveness. Also, mobile devices – Android in particular – are ripe for fakeware attacks. Fakeware is a so-called antivirus program that actually is spyware or malware, but fools users by providing fake reports claiming the app has found and addressed security threats. I suggest doing a lot of research on any antivirus app before installing it.

Conclusion

Smartphone security is a topic that has just recently become an issue. As smartphones become more powerful and popular the malware targeting them will certainly increase. That’s just the way of security – if something is worth stealing, someone will probably try to steal it.

Don’t take this as scaremongering, however. The steps above will help protect you, and with vigilance, you should be able to side-step any problems.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0-jottiq-intro.png">How much “stuff” do you really download on the Internet? Whether you’re downloading movies (we know you do!), new music, software, or participating in some other activity that may or may not violate the Digital Media Copyright Act, you are potentially exposing your computer to corrupt files, malware, and viruses. Even if you only use your computer once a month and you only visit a single website you still face this risk.

There are a lot of different ways to scan the files you download to see if they are clean, but none quite like JottiQ. JottiQ takes advantage of Jotti’s online malware scanner, which uses multiple popular antivirus programs to scan your files, without having to download or install any of them.

What Is JottiQ?

As I stated above, JottiQ is a tool that makes it more convenient to use Jotti’s malware scan, which is an online service optimized for one-by-one scanning of files you do not trust. If you’re wary of a file you downloaded because you have a strange feeling about the site it came from or you’re just curious, JottiQ is a good way to relieve that stress.

So is JottiQ a virus scanner? No, not really.

JottiQ is merely the go-between that relays the files you wish to have scanned to the online Jotti’s malware scan service. JottiQ should be considered to be an investigative tool and as such will not offer any options to delete or otherwise affect the files you scan.

JottiQ will scan the heck out of your files though, utilizing popular anti-virus apps like Avast, AVG, AntiVir, and over a dozen other programs. If your recently downloaded files are infected with something, you’ll know about it.

The application allows you to build a queue of files needing scanning. It also uses Jotti’s internal cache to speed up scans, lists scanners with detections at the top of the list in red, allows you to open scan results in your browser, and is integrated with right-click functionality so you can just click a file and scan it immediately.

How To Start Using JottiQ

To start using JottiQ, head over to this page and download the JottiQ v1.0.3 installer. Run the installer and you’ll be able to install the core components of the app. If you’re missing any applications required to run JottiQ, like I was, you will be notified and JottiQ can download and install them for you.

The installation process doesn’t take very long at all and is very easy to go through. Once you’re all done, you can start dragging files into JottiQ’s main window to queue them up for the multiple antivirus scanners. Or you can just right-click a file to scan it, if you installed context menu support (default setting).

JottiQ will give you an initial scan result to let you know if it thinks your file is safe or not, even before you get the actual results from the various programs scanning the file.

Off to the right of the app, you’ll see the list of all the anti-virus programs being used to run the scans, as well as what the individual results were for each program. If your file does happen to get a hit on one or more of the programs listed, you should be able to install that specific application for removal.

That’s all there is to it. JottiQ offers a light-weight, simple way to check your files without installing a lot of programs to figure out what will remove a potential threat. While I’d recommend you install an anti-virus program to begin with, JottiQ should help you out in case one of your downloads has you worrying.

What do you think of JottiQ?
