BlackBerry announced on Monday at its 2013 BlackBerry Live keynote address that it will finally be releasing it Blackberry Messenger (BBM) for iPhone and Android over the summer. Up until now, the popular BBM service has been exclusively available only on BlackBerry-branded phones. The existing app allows users to bypass calling, text-message and data charges by communicating using text, photos, videos, and voice on WiFi, similar to other popular apps such as iMessage and WhatsApp.

MS messages have become one of the most common forms of communication. They can also be extremely flexible, with scheduling and delivery reports. While delivery reports are usually included in stock SMS apps, scheduling is not. It would be great to have that ability, so you can easily send regular reminders to friends and coworkers, wish someone a happy birthday right at midnight, or otherwise pre-type a message that you want to send later because you know that you will be busy. There are plenty of apps available for Android which can take care of this for you.

It's a little more "instant" than e-mail but not as intrusive as a phone call. It's convenient, but it's not annoying if managed right. And most of all, it's one of the most highly addictive forms of communication in the world. It's for all of these reasons that I went out in search of a way to continue sending text messages with my phone even when my phone is nowhere near me, and that's when I stumbled across the MightyText extension for Chrome.

A moment of introspection, please: What do you do more often - call people using your phone, or text them? I would bet it's the latter. For many people, texting is more convenient than calling. It's discrete, so you can do it on the bus (unless you happen to be the driver); it's asynchronous, so the other person doesn't have to be immediately available, and more.

Apple's built-in messaging app is good. It has most of the features that any avid text messenger needs. It looks nice, and even offers a little bit of customization. The best way to sum up Apple's SMS app is to say it is fully functional. Is fully functional enough for you? Personally, I want more from texting. I don't want an app that just does the normal things. I want an app that does everything I could ever want and then some.

Use Google Voice from your Windows desktop without leaving your browser open. With its chat-like interface and instant notifications, GVNotifier is the best way to send free SMS messages in Windows – assuming, of course, you live in the USA. You can do this from your web browser, or using the Google Voice extension for Chrome, but there is no official desktop app for Google Voice at this time.

Get information while on the go, even if your phone isn't all that smart. All you need to do is send a text to Google. Look up the phone numbers of local businesses, check the status of any flight, translate any word, convert currencies or see scores for recent game. All this and more is a single SMS message away, regardless of what kind of phone you use. Google's SMS Search is little-known, and doesn't work as well as it used to, but it's a great way to look up information.

Use Google Voice's SMS functionality like it's a chat program on your Mac. VoiceMac is a free Mac desktop client for Google's free, USA-only phone service, and it offers you the SMS interface you've been looking for. There's an official Google Voice app for iPhone and another for Android, but so far Google hasn't released an official desktop app for Mac, Windows or Linux computers.
