<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/search-everywhere.jpg" />It is always fun to discover new great tools people can use to search. We have shared quite a few of them already, including tools that let you quickly jump to other search engines after you search Google, plugins that support search suggestions and Firefox addons that let you search faster than Google Instant.

Today’s one is pretty much unique: I for one have never seen anything similar.

Search Everywhere is a great FireFox addon that allows you to search over the content linked from your web browser’s current page. In essence, it works as follows.

Imagine you land on a page that links to a number of related resources – and you want to search within these linked resources;

Click the tool icon in the status bar, type your search term and hit “Search”

The tool will extract the linked domains (or URLs depending on your settings);

Then the tool will create a custom Google search engine that will search for your keyword within the extracted domains / URLs.

Here’s a simple example from the developer to explain how it can turn really useful:

…suppose you are hanging out at the Dapper Rat website, and become interested in cages for pet rats. The Dapper Rat has a terrific page of nearly 300 links pointing to reliable pet rat information. You need a search engine that searches over this reliable information. That is exactly what the Search Everywhere toolbar does, using a Linked CSE.

That being said, the tool seems to be a great help when you want to find most relevant results from the websites listed on a links page or in a web directory.

Now that we are clear with how the tool works, let’s look over its options.

Search Everywhere Options

As I have already said, to trigger the search field, you need to click the icon in the status bar (sadly, there’s no keyboard shortcut for that):

Within the toolbar there are a few handy options:

SiteSearch: Run a simple SITE: search to narrow results to the current domain (instead of searching within linked content). To learn more about Google’s SITE: search operator, check out this post by Saikat Basu: 5 Ways To Do A Site-Specific Search Using Search Engines

New Tab: When checked, this prompts to display the search results in a new tab.

URL Extraction:

Exact: Use extracted URLs without modification, to create a very “narrow” search engine (this will restrict search results to exact URLs you see on the current page).

Paths: Use the host and path from an extracted URL, but omit any filenames (like the above one but allowing a bit broader search). For MUO, for example, it would mean searching within http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/ (which is our directory).

Hosts: Use only the domains from extracted URLs to create a “broad” search engine.

Extraction modifiers:

Filter: When checked, this option is supposed to filter out certain overly-dominant URL patterns (I am not sure I got this one to work; I wish we could set the filters manually)

Boost exact: This allows combination of host or path URL extraction, with an extra layer of exact URL extraction. Exact urls will be preferred in the search results.

Do you see where this tool may turn particularly useful? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/FacebookSearch01.png">Like no other social circle before, Facebook has managed to draw in the masses and keep people engaged. It’s almost a perversion that the one thing that makes users come back and convinces new ones to join, is the attention they give each other. It’s a genial system because it feeds its own growth, almost like a Perpetual Mobile.

Now, the sheer amount of people and data available on Facebook is something you can use to your advantage. You might be looking for a job or you are interested in trends. So how do you obtain the information you’re looking for and make the right connections? You (re)search.

This article will provide some ideas for searching Facebook and finding specific information.

1. Search Multiple Terms Simultaneously

You can search Facebook for two, three, four, or more things at once by adding the “|” sign (minus the quotation marks) between the terms. For example “MakeUseOf | Lifehacker” will give you the result pictured below. This way you can see results of terms you want to compare on a single page.

2. Specify Your Search

This may seem pretty obvious, but wait ’till I get there. You can display different types of results by clicking the categories listed to the left. OK, that was kind of obvious. Now note that the list also features an option to only search for posts by your friends or from everyone, i.e. all over Facebook.

And that’s where it gets interesting, as you can now filter the results by language and post types. This is perfect if you’re looking to hook up with people from a certain area or just find local information.

3. Facebook App: Advanced Search 2.2 Beta

Using Facebook apps you can fill a specific niche. The Advanced Search app improves your search options within Facebook. It adds several new categories and search options. For example you can search for applications and have the results sorted by ‘most fans’ or ‘relevance’.

4. Website: FacePinch

FacePinch is a real-time Facebook search engine. So if you’re wondering what is being said right now about say Justin Bieber, this is where you would find out. The site also keeps an eye on trending topics and popular searches.

To use either Facepinch or the following website, Openbook, you do not need to own a Facebook account. They are open to the public.

5. Website: Openbook

At Openbook you can basically do the same as on FacePinch, with one little difference. You can discriminate between updates from guys, girls, or all genders. So if you were interested in female opinion only, that would be the place to check it out.

The idea behind Openbook was to make people aware of what they put online and that there are consequences. Their tagline is “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life. Whether you want to or not.” Next to it is a button that says “Learn why this is bad!” If this made you think, be sure to check out our security-related Facebook articles listed below.

Craigslist.org is an online wanted ads site that’s been around for a bit. It’s a great tool if you are looking to buy something second hand. As mentioned in other MakeUseOf articles, its design leaves something to be desired but there is no doubt to its usefulness. There are some irritations such as the absence of pictures in the Craigslist search results (check out David Pierce’s list of 5 Tools To Make Craigslist Even More Useful for “ByeByeList”) and they could do a bit better with local search options like having the ability to set a search radius (check out Craiglook).

I also noticed that Craigslist does not offer the ability (out-of-the-box at least) email yourself new Craigslist search results. These basically include latest advertisements you care about. Do you ever get tired of constantly running the same search over and over, hoping the item you’re looking for will show up? Well, since Craigslist search makes use of RSS feeds (Track A Craigslist Category In a Feed Reader), searching for the same item multiple times is a complete waste of time. Let me show you how to take a search term, find the RSS feed for that search term, and have the feed updates emailed to you!

Let’s start with Craigslist, the search, and the feed.

First find your local Craigslist page. Head to Craigslist.org, and look to the lists off to the right to find your local country, state or city (or nearest).

Once you find the closest location you can find, search for what you are looking for. Just type something in the search box. NOTE: you may find better, more narrowed search results by navigating to a category and then running the search, but it’s all up to you.

One thing that Craigslist does do right is it adds RSS feeds… everywhere! For instance, they have feeds set up for categories, subcategories and even search terms! In each case, just check out the bottom right corner of the page for the RSS icon.

Now all there is to do is have the FEED updates emailed to you.

There is a tool called FeedMyInbox (for more information on the tool, check out MakeUseOf’s overview). Basically this site offers you the ability to enter a feed and your email address, and have the updates sent directly to your inbox. You can do this without even signing up for an account! Please note that email updates will only be sent once every 24 hours with all updates from that time frame.

So, head back to Craigslist to copy the feed for your Craigslist search. The easiest way to do this is to right-click on the RSS icon and click COPY (or COPY LINK LOCATION – may depend on your browser of choice).

Now head over to FeedMyInbox and paste the feed address into the website URL field. Then, obviously, enter your email address into the email address field.

Next, you will have a verification email sent to you to make sure it was really you who signed up to receive the updates.

Just click the confirmation link knowing that you always have the option to cancel the updates anytime you want.

And that’s how to save the time of repeating a Craigslist search over and over on Craigslist by have the results sent directly to your email inbox! Did you find this helpful? I am sure there are tons of other ways to email yourself Craigslist search results. Do you have another method? We’d love to hear it in the comments.

Life’s primary vocation is search”¦ for happiness, for love or for that vital piece of information on the web. Search and search engines are the glue that binds the WWW together. Search engines bring us to the doorstep of the right information resources. But very frequently, we need to dig deeper into a single site to harvest its information. That is why most well designed websites/blogs/directories have internal site-specific search engines.

But in our quest for the right data, how many times have we come across a website which lacks a search engine of its own? There have been sites which I could have loved more but alas for a search box of its own. Then there are sites which do have a search box but you aren’t quite getting what you want. So it’s worth a second try with some deep digging of your own.

So for such crunch times, here are some workarounds to do an internal search on a specific website or blog.

Google Site Search Query

The ol’ favorite reminds us the value of memorizing advanced Google search operators. Google indexes most sites on the web and so the “˜site:‘ search query helps to limit your search within a website. For instance, the query antivirus site:makeuseof.com will return results for the keyword antivirus but only from MakeUseof.com. (Their shouldn’t be a space between the colon and the domain name).

The site: operator can also be used to restrict searches within one top domain. For instance, keyword site:net or keyword site:edu. This works on Yahoo and Bing too.

According to a little poll we had some while back, it is the third most liked Google operator.

Search Engines and Advanced Search Options

Most search engines have this feature as an option but you just have to go into the advanced search page. Here’s where you get it in these two popular (one upcoming) search engines.

For Google

For Yahoo

For Bing

Use a Firefox Add-on

Search Site is an experimental Firefox add-on which makes site-specific searches very easy. The local search can be done either by selecting a word on a webpage and using the right-click context menu (Search site for selection).

Or by clicking the Search Site green icon on the search bar. You can use the search engine of your choice to do the site-specific search.

Also check out the use of Firefox smart keywords mentioned by Ann in her post on 8 Tips to Make Firefox Search Friendly.

Use a web service

Though the interface is plain, the Newtechusa.com search interface does the job intended using the Google search engine. Specify the domain URL in the first field and then use the second step to query the specific domain.

Create your own site searcher using Rollyo

Rollyo lets you roll on with your search by providing an easy non-geeky way to create a customized search engines for sites you want ““ rather than the whole worldwide web. Pick the sites you want to search, and Rollyo creates a custom search engine for it.

You can create a search engine for one specific site or a max of 25 sites. You can also browse, use, modify and share Searchrolls (the created search engines) created by the community of users on Rollyo. Any Rollyo Searchroll can be added to Firefox for one click access. For a quick single site setup, you can use the Rollyo Bookmarklet which not only lets you do a local search but also you can add sites to your Searchrolls on the fly.

Kaly’s post on creating your own search engines with Rollyo looks into in with more detail.

Sometimes we miss the trees because of the forest. A single site in itself instead of the whole wide web could be the source of all our information needs. So, it helps to dig deep into its coffers with specific searches.

What do you do if you come across a site which lacks a search box? Do you browse merrily away or you fall back on a utility like Google for advanced searching?

The Google Toolbar is a great way to extend your browser. It includes a lot of useful buttons, and the button gallery has even more if the default buttons don’t meet your needs. But what if the button gallery does not have something you’re looking for? Fortunately, creating a custom search button for the Google Toolbar is quick and easy!

The other day, I created a search button for Google Reader, because surprisingly enough it doesn’t come with one and the button gallery doesn’t have one either. Mark O’Neill has already put together a search button for MakeUseOf, and I’ve made use of it myself quite a bit. For demonstration purposes, let’s pretend he didn’t make one and you’d really like to have one. Here’s what you would do to create a custom search button for MakeUseOf:

Navigate to the MakeUseOf homepage

Right-click inside of the search field.

Left-click on the menu item that says “Generate custom search”¦”

You’ll see the “Google Toolbar Custom Button Generator” automatically load in the page title, icon (if the site has one), and display the URL as the description. The description is what is displayed in the tooltip when you move your mouse over the button, so you might want to change it to something more descriptive like Search MakeUseOf.

Click Add and you’re done!

The new button will appear on the toolbar with a yellow box around it to highlight the new button.

The search button that Mark created also includes the MakeUseOf RSS feed as well. You can learn how to add an RSS feed in the Google Toolbar API documentation. The API docs contains additional information on how to create more advanced buttons.

Do you use the Google Toolbar in your browser? Have you created any custom buttons you found were lacking?

FleeQ offers an easy to use aggregated search engine and also allows website and blog owners the ability to monetize their sites and receive targeted traffic. FleeQ delivers search results from all the major search engines. You can also quickly integrate FleeQ into your Firefox browser search bar.

As you begin to type your search terms into the FleeQ search bar, suggested topics will appear below it. You can choose to click on one of the suggested search topics or continue with your own and press enter.

When viewing your search results, you’ll notice a web page in the background and a search results widget in the forefront. The background page is actually how FleeQ displays their ads and also how you can make money. These full page ads are what they call their “revolutionary patent pending ad type called the Ancillary Ads, which delivers full page traffic directly to your website.”

The unique search results widget that they use is patent pending and is displayed using sponsor skins and WordSpots, which are pretty much like AdWords. The search results widgets shows you search results from four difference sources and gives the option to make another search right from the widget.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering how does this allow you to make money using your own site? Well, much like the Google AdSense for Search, FleeQ supplies you with a search widget that you can add to your website or blog. First, you’ll need to create a FleeQ account. Once you log in, it’s as easy as following the prompts to copy and paste the code to your site.

FleeQ does require that you run the search on your site for a small period of time, so that they can collect the analytics needed so that you can start receiving targeted traffic. Don’t worry though because in the meantime, you will be earning free traffic from their unique traffic exchange.

One great thing about using FleeQ on your site is that you can choose whether or not you want to receive more traffic or more revenue. Your FleeQ dashboard is also set up a lot like Google Analytics, providing you with very in-depth website statistics.

There are two ways to earn with FleeQ:

CPC ““ You will be paid by CPC (cost per click) for WordSpot shown on your Search Results Widget.

CPM ““ You will be paid by CPM (cost per impression) for qualifying campaigns showing Ancillary Ads, Sponsored Search Skins, and/or WordSpots on your Search Results Widgets.

So as you can see, FleeQ is not only a great search engine but it’s also a great way to earn a little extra money with one (or more) of your websites and/or blogs. FleeQ definitely brings a lot of unique features to the table.

I’m very eager to hear about how this works for you. If you do decide to try it out or have already, please feel free to share your experience in the comments.

What do you think of FleeQ? Is this something that you would use or is it just another attempt at trying to be the next Google Adsense? Please share your opinions in the comments.

In the second part of my “Back To Basics” series, and following on from Wendy’s article on adding a search function to your Blogger blog, I would like to talk today about adding a search engine to your website or blog. This is one of the most asked questions in my email inbox – which search engine should be added to a website and which ones should be avoided.

Most webmasters and bloggers naturally follow the money trail and add a Google Adsense search engine but if you don’t want to do that, there are some decent free alternatives out there.

The Google Adsense option

Let’s first look at the Adsense option since that’s the most popular route that people take. I have an Adsense search engine on my own blog so I am very familiar with it.

I am very happy with the Adsense engine as it pulls in some decent money on a monthly basis. Nothing to get hyper-excited about but it funds my tea and chocolate chip cookie addiction! Basically, whenever someone uses your Adsense search engine to make search queries on your website, you get a small payment from Google. If you get enough regular visitors to your site using your search engine, that can add up to quite a nice payment at the end of the month, especially if they are using the other aspects of Adsense as well such as clicking on the adverts (but no money gets paid out until you reach a minimum $100).

After being approved by Google for an Adsense account, just click on “Adsense Setup” then “Adsense For Search” :

You’ll then be asked to fill in details such as your site URL, your site language, site location and you can customize the look and feel of the search engine. You can also customize the search results page such as being able to put your logo on the page. Then you will receive the HTML code to put the search engine on your webpage. This is what mine looks like:

The free options

But what if you don’t want Adsense on your site? What if making money from search is not your thing? Well it would make you a unique and remarkable person to turn down cash but OK, there are free and decent alternatives out there. Let’s take a look at four of them:

Google Custom Search

As well as Adsense, Google also offers a free Custom Search engine that is really easy to set up. The free version requires you to accept adverts on the search results page though.

Yahoo Search

This is a basic search box but it does its job and searches your website and you can also choose to search Yahoo Search as well.

Windows Live Search

Again a basic search box which you can either configure to search your site or search the web. I don’t think you can have a search box that does both. Pesky Steve Ballmer!

Freefind

Freefind has been around for years and I used it on my many websites before I moved onto Google Adsense. It was (and still is to my knowledge) absolutely great. Here are some of the things I liked about it :

Daily re-indexing

Emailed search reports with the search terms your visitors put into your search engine.

Schedule when you want the search indexes spidered – as often or as little as you want.

Adobe PDF file indexing – the spiders don’t ignore them!

Specify exactly what pages you want the spiders to ignore and they get ignored.

Other formats such as Word and Powerpoint are recognised and indexed.

A sitemap is automatically generated for you.

So these are just four alternative options for adding search engine to your website if Adsense is not something you want to get involved in, but at the same time, you would like to have some kind of search function on your website.

Do you have any other preferred search engine for your website? If so, let us know in the comments!
