When it’s time to lay out a network, whether it’s on a large scale at a corporation or on a small scale at your house, wouldn’t it be nice to lay out all of your network devices, their IP settings, and then simulate whether or not your network will work as expected? That’s exactly what you can do with the open source network simulator called NetEmul.

We love making models here at MUO. But one problem with tweaking a model design in the real world is that to test it, you have to rebuild a rocket with new parameters, do a test launch, and then head back to the drawing board to further improve your design. What if you could use a computer to simulate a model rocket launch, with the ability to modify and test all of the possible alterations you can make to your rocket design?

As a kid, I’ve always loved to play with flight simulators. I still do today, except the ones we get to enjoy today are way more advanced than what I got to play with about 13 years ago (although the same applies to all games). While today’s flight simulators are much more advanced, they also carry a price tag which not everyone may want to pay. So what’s the best free flight simulator known to man? FlightGear of course!

Windows 8 is fast approaching, expected to arrive sometime in 2012. Not everyone is going to want to download the developer preview version of Windows 8 currently being hawked by Microsoft. Or the Windows 8 beta due to be made available shortly. Thankfully you don’t have to do so in order to get a basic feel for how the latest – and if you believe the hype, greatest – OS from Microsoft will shape up.

These days it can be hard to find a decent space sim, whether you’re into combat, exploration or the die-hard simulation experience. The genre is regarded as “dead” by many, with projects like Elite 4 never having seen the light of day. One game genre that’s unfortunately withered is the city simulator. This type of game was never a huge success compared to action-packed shooters and real-time strategy games, but it’s always had a place in the hearts of some PC gamers. While the vaunted SimCity series has ended (for now), there are a few games that carry on the legacy.
