I remember when I was a child that every Saturday was shopping day. My mum would take my brother and I to this huge shopping center where we would get what we needed and then go for lunch before heading home. This was the 1980′s, a time when there was no Internet and the only way you could buy what you wanted was to go out to the shops and get it yourself.

Fast forward 30 years and the situation has completely changed. Now the Internet is King and everyone is buying their items online, turning online shopping into a major industry in itself. Amazon rules in a lot of areas but there is still room for other heavy hitters such as supermarkets who offer home delivery for groceries, eBay for that hard to find item and Groupon for that last minute unbelievable deal. You can download a lot of stuff too – all that’s needed is a fast Internet connection, some patience and a credit card. The shopping experience has been turned upside down and it’s bricks and mortar stores that are suffering as a result.

Our infographic today comes courtesy of Grovo and it displays some staggering figures such as the total amount spent online in 2010 ($143 billion!), the rising influence of mobile phones in online shopping, who dominates which retail sector, and finally what kinds of stuff people tend to buy the most online.

Let us know what you think of it. How much of your stuff do you buy online? Do you ever go out to a “real shop” anymore or is everything bought on a computer with a credit card? How do you see online shopping progressing in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

A while ago, I wrote about a web app that helps you make some sense of the vast selection of smartphones currently available on the market. While Geekaphone was great, it was limited to smartphones only, and we all know that’s not the only thing that comes with a huge selection.

Recently, I had to purchase a laptop for a family member, who couldn’t even begin to find her way amongst all the possible options. Even for me, the selection was overwhelming. Where do you start? So imagine my joy when I found out that the makers of Geekaphone now offer a similar service for other items, such as tablets, cameras, TVs and even laptops. With Sortable, you can sort through different products according to the things you find most important, and find out what the best product is for your specific needs. You can also easily compare different items, and learn about similar items for you to consider.

Getting Started With Sortable

The first thing you have to do with Sortable, is decide what you want to buy. And this is probably the hardest decision you’re going to have to make in the whole process. On the main screen, you can also choose your maximum price, but you can always change that as you go along. Now all you have to do is click “Go”.

If you’re truly dumbfounded and have no idea what you’re looking for, Sortable offers a list of popular devices in each category. You can start by browsing these devices, and looking at the most popular comparisons other people have made. This should get you up to speed with the hottest trends on the market.

Finding The Right Device For You

Before you even start digging in, Sortable will recommend the best devices based only on your price range. The best device will appear on the left side of the screen, and more options will appear on the right.

As you go along, you’ll think of things that matter to you more than others, or things the device you choose must have. You can easily screen the results by almost any imaginable parameter. This includes everything from brand, network and form factor…

…to card format, display and ports. These change, of course, when searching for different products. Simply go over these criteria, choose your preferences and watch what happens to the results below.

When you find a device you’re interested in, you can get a comprehensive overview of the device’s specs, including photos, advantages, tradeoffs and reviews from Amazon.

You can also see how the device matches up to its competitors in various categories, and get an idea of what other similar devices are on the market, and what makes them better or worse than this device.

Comparing Items

If you’ve found two items you like, and would like to know which one is better for you, Sortable offers a comprehensive comparison between any two items, which includes any differences and similarities, a full specs comparison, and even a visual comparison.

To compare two items, either check the compare box when browsing items, or click the “compare” link at the top left.

Here, you can fill in any two devices. You don’t have to remember the full name, simply start typing the brand name, and Sortable will offer different models for you to choose from.

You will then get a short overview of reasons to consider each device. You can already see significant differences here which can help you choose.

If this is not enough, you can bore down into the more detailed differences, including a full specs comparison of every little aspect of the devices.

Editing Information

As you can see, there’s a huge amount of information in those specs. Naturally, some information is missing, and some information may be inaccurate. But there’s something you can do about it! When you’re viewing a item’s specs, and you find a missing piece of information or something you believe to be wrong, simply click the edit icon on the right and add or change that spec.

You don’t even have to create an account to do this, but if you do, you can keep track of your edits and become a known contributor on the site. If you choose to claim your account (personalize it, as opposed to keeping it anonymous), you can sign in with either Facebook, Google or Yahoo.

On the front page, Sortable features all the top contributors for each category (even if they are anonymous), and you can view a detailed list of their edits.

More Products

Wish you could use Sortable to find more products? Well, it seems that they’re definitely planning on it. If you want to influence what those next products will be, click the Sortable icon on any page, and choose “Vote on what’s next!”

This will direct you to Sortable’s Facebook page, where you can vote on what new products you’d like to see on Sortable. Looks like cars are leading the pack!

Bottom Line

The only thing that’s apparently missing from Sortable is a price comparison feature between different stores. The site seems to be tightly integrated with Amazon, and all buy links direct to there. But price comparison engines are a dime a dozen, and once you manage to decide what you want to buy, finding the right price should be a piece of cake. In fact, ignoring the price makes the site much more usable internationally, since prices and stores vary depending on where you are. Specs usually don’t.

What do you think of Sortable? Know of other good comparison engines we should try? Share in the comments.

As Apple’s popularity grows, the company has been continuing to expand its retail presence across the globe. Usually this is accomplished by opening new stand-alone Apple stores. But while the company may take a walled-garden approach to their products, they’re sometimes a bit more open about running the business.

May 6th will see the opening of the first Apple mini-store inside a Target. It’s part of a larger store-in-a-store idea that Target is giving a whirl. The chain hopes that this concept will drive excitement among customers and give people who might not normally visit Target a reason to step inside.

However, other companies scheduled to enter Target are doing so on a rotating basis. The Apple centers should be permanent, at least so long as they prove capable of pushing Apple products.

Though Target has never participated in a program like this before, there is precedent for this idea. Many Best Buy locations host an Apple display where customers can try out not only the tablets (which are found at many retailers) but also MacBooks and sometimes iMacs. That partnership has been ongoing for several years, so there is reason to believe that Target’s endeavor will see some success.

Will we see any special deals on Apple products grow from the partnership? It’s too early to tell. Some retailers have discounted certain iPad versions lately, but even that is often restricted to only the most expensive versions. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m definitely not a fashion guru, for my wardrobe typically consists of halfway-open plaid flannel shirts and a pair of old Chuck Taylors, and on a good day, I’ll actually wear pants. However, I recently discovered a site called Wanelo (pronounced “wah-nee-lo,” for want, need, and love) that brings together a ton of rare and unique clothing options in one place. The catch is quite simply this – the clothing is primarily for women.

I took into consideration that quite a bit of the blouses, skirts, and shoes on this site look fairly similar to the stuff in my girlfriend’s closet, so I figured that it has to be good. As far as I know, she has taste, so ladies, this post is for you.

Find Rare Items And Accessories

I’d liken this site to being a fashion aggregator, utilizing a social networking type of system to bring its users together so that they can share links of clothing and accessories from all over the Internet. What I noticed was that quite a bit of the site includes either hand-made or not-very-well-known items (and yes, a great deal of mainstream products), so if you’re into appearing unique and different, then this site is for you. Granted, there isn’t only clothing on this site, but it’s safe to say that it’s the main selection.

What I did like about the site was the fact that it offered a system of collections in which users can find similar items. It was through the collections that I discovered that there were a few men’s items on the store as well as places to buy candy. In addition to this, there are collections of apartment furnishings, iPhone accessories, and even bridal adornments. Honestly, I think it’s pretty cool that you can find all this stuff online.

Build Up Your List Of Fav Selections

Since Wanelo is primarily user-generated, you can trust that it’s not just one solitary person or company throwing what they think looks good at you. Chances are that there are a few individuals on Wanelo who think like you do (albeit this concept of appearing unique), and one of the features of the site gives you the option to follow them and stay updated on their top picks. Furthermore, if you fancy a certain merchant’s products just as much as your friends’ selections, you can follow the stores themselves on the site.

One of the cool options that Wanelo has to offer is its toolbar button, and this is used in the same exact way that you would use StumbleUpon. If you find something, just click the toolbar button, and voilà – you have successfully contributed to the community clothing melting pot. Alternatively, you can just punch in the URL on Wanelo itself, but really, what fun is that?

Share Your Finds

Based on what I found on the site, Wanelo is also used as a means to share your style with your friends. What does that mean? Well, as they say, this means no more ugly Christmas sweaters as gifts (bet you wish I had written this sooner). Furthermore, you can find out what your friends like, so when a proper time to give gifts comes around, you can get what they want with no awkward questions asked.

Conclusion

I’m not going to veer away from my standard flannel shirts, but chances are you might find something pretty nice on here (and yes, that goes for the men, too). However, all in all, this site is very well made, and it does exactly what it is designed to do. That’s the best thing that a site really can do – just keep it simple.

What kinds of things have you found using Wanelo? Do you know of any other sites like Wanelo?

While online retailers such as Amazon go from strength to strength, a damning new report in the UK has stated the high street is facing a crisis – in towns and cities, 1 in 7 high street locations lie empty.

Is the report justified? Are online retailers like Amazon responsible for this, and why? What can revitalise the high-street?

Is it that bad?

First off, referring to it as a ‘crisis’ is perhaps a little dramatic and mostly just a headline grabber. Even Amazon admits that it needs brick and mortar stores to drive sales for devices like it’s new Kindle Fire. Though many will be sold online, the majority of consumers will heading out to the shops to get a little hands-on time when deciding on a tablet purchase this Christmas – and that’s where Amazon needs to reel them in.

Though we don’t have the new Fire in the UK yet, the Kindle line has a strong presence even in supermarket retailers such as Tesco – alongside the iPad – while other tablet devices remain noticeably absent.

We also need to bear in mind that a large proportion of the population is still very far from what most of us would define as “tech savvy”, and many remain distrustful of online retailers in general. There is simply too large of a “digital divide” for the high street to be in that much trouble in the foreseeable future.

If my own purchasing habits can be considered a good indicator though, I can tell you now that I’ve placed an average of three orders a month with Amazon, whilst only visiting the high street only once a month. My spend on Amazon is 100 times what I’ve spent on the high street. So why is Amazon winning out – for me at least?

Cost

It’s fair to say that in the majority of cases Amazon has a product for cheaper. The Amazon app makes it ridiculously easy to do a price check while looking at a physical product, allowing you to quickly compare and add it straight to your online basket. They’ve even gone so far as to undercut high street retailers by offering a discount if you walk into a high street store and scan an item, then purchase through Amazon instead. While most of us will agree this is pretty despicable business practice, I’m sure we secretly all appreciate the savings – especially at this time of year.

Service

I hate to say it England, but I’m sick of the level of service – is this really the best you can do? The typical attitude of retail staff seems to be “for god’s sake, why are you buying this? Just hurry up and bugger off so I can get back to sitting here”. If you want to know how to do good service, go to Japan. They even bow to you. And yes, I have worked in retail before – over the Christmas period no less – so don’t think I don’t know how crappy it can be.

Excuse me if I don’t feel the need to put myself through that. Amazon has always been polite to me, and even makes suggestions for other things I might like. Service – as one of the few things physical retail stores should be able to one-up an internet site – is miserably pathetic for the most part.

Convenience

Parking charges, crowds, queuing – it all adds up to an inconvenient day out. If I can buy the same item online – saving money and time – that’s more time I can spend at home, with my family, enjoying the rest of my life.

The Solution?

The one thing that online retailers cannot offer is an experience, yet most high street retailers are failing miserably there too. One example of a technology retailer that got this spot on is Apple – whose retail stores continue to outshine any others in terms of revenue per square meter. Why is that? Well, not only are the Apple stores a thing of physical beauty – awe inspiring architectural structures – but they also play host to the genius bar, as well as tutorial sessions and events focused around the creative ethos. In short, they create an experience – not just a sale.

Personally, I think the solution is not to try simply try and restore the status quo of the traditional high street filled with retailers, but instead to turn the high street into a more social gathering. That’s something which online retailers simply cannot offer.

As an example from the 8 years I spent living in Kyoto, the biggest thing that drew me into town was not the shopping, but the entertainment centers. A popular high street destination there is called Round One, and for want of a better word – it’s a play center for adults open 24 hours a day. Paying by the hour – the multi-storey building are filled with arcade amusements, billiards, karaoke, bowling, even outdoor sports on the roof – all free play once you’ve paid your entrance fee.

These places make the center of town… a destination rather than a simple shopping trip. Markets and places of historical or cultural interest could do the same job, yet we continue to see the high street as primarily a retail location.

In conclusion, Amazon have played some pretty underhanded tactics to deliberately undercut high street stores, but in these times of cutbacks more than ever I appreciate any savings. I doubt retail shops will ever completely die out, just as books won’t be replaced by eBooks either – yet is certainly a disturbing trend. More high street retailers are disappearing, and online spending continues to grow – that part is no lie. As the next generation of consumers grow up in a world where online transactions are no longer feared – the digital divide will be broken down further. One thing is for certain – the high street in 10 years time will look quite different to how it is today.

How about you? Do you do most of your shopping online? What do you think the high street can offer that Amazon doesn’t? Are US high streets facing the same ‘crisis’ as the UK? Let us know in the comments!

I sure hope you’ve finished your Christmas shopping, wrapped your gifts and can sit back and enjoy the festive period- but what about those last minute purchases? This year, instead of rushing out and panic-buying socks why not finish off your lists with an app or two? Apple’s App Store allows you to gift an app to a friend via the app description on iTunes or your own iPhone or iPad.

Don’t forget to make your purchases on the evening of December 24th to ensure a proper surprise on Christmas morning (you might also need to remind the recipient to check their inbox, of course).

Garage Band ($5)

It really doesn’t matter if you’re buying for a male, female, child, teen or adult because they’re guaranteed hours of enjoyment from Garage Band and will be literally singing your praises all day for gracing their device with such an essential piece of software.

No, really – if you know someone with an iPhone or iPad who doesn’t have Garage Band then you owe it to them to spend the $5 on making their device better. Making music is as fun, simple or complex as you want it to be and… I could go on, but we’ll have an article all about it up soon.

Also consider: iMaschine ($5) – This groove sketchpad from the mighty Native Instruments is ideal for anyone with an interest in electronic music or creating interesting beats. It comes with a ton of samples to get you started and was recently updated with bug fixes, making it more stable than ever. Read our full review.

djay – iPad ($19.99) / iPhone & iPod Touch ($9.99)

Probably the most “serious” DJ app for the iOS platform, djay comes in both iPhone and iPad flavours. At the time of writing there are massive reductions (up to 90%) on both apps so if you’re lucky you might score a cheap but powerful gift.

djay allows complete access to your iTunes library and makes mixing it all together easy and fun. Considering this is the best app of it’s kind on the platform it’s no surprise to see features like BPM matching, realistic scratching and visual waveforms included in the price.

Also consider: Loopy (iPhone, $2.99) / Loopy HD (iPad, $7.99) – As the name would suggest Loopy is designed to build loops by layering up samples. The app is very simple to learn but will also please the more experienced out there with a rich set of features.

Golfscape GPS Rangefinder ($19.99)

Dad likes golf? Don’t fancy buying him yet more boring golfing accessories? Good – cheer him up this year with augmented reality! That’s exactly what Golfscape GPS Rangefinder utilises in order to improve your game.

The app comes ready-to-go on around 37,000 golf courses worldwide and uses GPS in order to help players plan their shots by detecting distance to the hole. Simply point your phone at the hole you’re playing and you’ll get distance information to the front, centre and back of the green as well notices about hazards.

Also consider: Golfshot GPS ($29.99) – Everything you see above but with aerial shots of the golf course you’re playing and “TouchPoint” technology. This essentially allows you to plan a route to the hole by touching a point on the map and displaying the distance between that point and the green. Serious golf stuff.

Infinity Blade 2 ($7.49)

The sequel to one of the prettiest smartphone games of all time, Infinity Blade II is a feast for eyes and thumbs alike. Featuring tweaked, slightly sharper graphics than its last outing and the same swordplay that convinced so many first time round, Infinity Blade II continues the story and refines the formula further.

Also consider: Batman Arkham City Lockdown ($6.49) – Hot off the heels of the recent console release, the latest handheld Batman game will have you touring Arkham City, taking out bad guys and encountering a slew of classic Batman characters and villains along the way.

Chrono Trigger ($9.99)

The SNES classic has finally made it onto the App Store, complete with original 16-bit graphics and an overhauled touch interface. Whilst original graphics might seem “lazy” to some, I’m of the opinion that this is how the game should be enjoyed.

Ideal for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the RPG genre, Chrono Trigger is a classic story-driven adventure that has aged surprisingly well.

Also consider: Final Fantasy ($8.99) – If JRPGs are the order of the day then the original Final Fantasy iOS conversion should probably see a mention. The story might be nearly 25 years old, but this reinvented iOS version is perfect for those who missed the original.

Scribblenauts Remix ($2.99)

Scribblenauts was originally a Nintendo DS game where puzzles had to be solved by introducing items, people and anything you can think of into the scene by simply typing it in. The updated iOS version not only contains new levels, but has another trick up its sleeve for 4S owners: Siri.

That means instead of having to type you can now bark instructions at your phone instead. Scribblenauts offers multiple ways to play, features tons of levels and of course comes with a Sandbox mode which is perfect for making God fight Cthulu during an earthquake or anything else you can think of.

Also consider: Minecraft – Pocket Edition ($7.49) – If creating worlds is the order of the day then it doesn’t come much more painstaking than Minecraft. This pocket edition features 36 different blocks and local multiplayer play as well as the usual single player fun.

Conclusion

That’s all for holiday app ideas this year folks. If you’ve got any apps of your own, any you’re hoping to receive or any that you’re thinking of buying for others then do share them in the comments below. Together we can get through Christmas shopping hell!

The Grand Central store will not be enclosed in glass like many of Apple’s other flagship stores, but it will be very spacious, allowing customers to leisurely explore products and software and receive lots of friendly sales assistance.

I happen to be an incredibly impulsive net-shopping addict. I'm like a kid in a toy shop on Amazon - “People who purchased this also purchased these:” is like poetry to my ears. So if you're like me and have firmly decided to do all your Christmas online this year - then congratulations, you're already going to be paying far less than physical retail stores will charge - but let me show you some of the other tactics I employ to save money.

It’s about that time of year when you might have already started thinking about what to give family and friends for Christmas. Personally, I can’t abide shopping in high stores – the crowds of people packed in tighter than a factory farmed chicken; the hideous odors of over-applied deodorants and all manner of perfumery; not to mention the terrible service of shop assistants who wish all their customers would just go away.

On the other hand, I happen to be an incredibly impulsive net-shopping addict. I’m like a kid in a toy shop on Amazon – “People who purchased this also purchased these:” is like poetry to my ears. So if you’re like me and have firmly decided to do all your Christmas shopping online this year – then congratulations, you’re already going to be paying far less than physical retail stores will charge – but let me show you some of the other tactics I employ to save money.

Save For Later – And Think On It

This a well-known paper-based approach to tackle impulse purchases, but online sites that save your basket can be used just as effectively. It’s simple really – instead of purchasing that item immediately, just add it to your basket, then shut the site down and promise yourself you can buy it if you still want it in a month. Amazon even has a specific “Save for Later” button.

Next time you log in to Amazon (or whatever site you’re using), take a serious look through whatever’s still saved in your basket, and most of the time that impulse purchase moment would have passed. Do you really think your dad will appreciate that electric pepper mill with toothpick attachment? Your sister doesn’t actually want that neon cat-scratcher, does she?

Of course, this relies on the site actually saving your basket for you. If not though – no problem. Just try to remember what it is you added – and if you can’t remember, then obviously it wasn’t that important!

You might also want to try this with your children – let them cut out and pin up, say, 3 items they want, onto a noticeboard. They have to stay there for a full month before you agree to buy them – so it forces them to really consider it. If they something else comes along in the meantime then they have to replace something already pinned up and restart the waiting time.

Save Your Basket – And Get a Coupon!

This is the same method but with a different result in mind. While implementing the “save your basket and think on it” tactic, I noticed that a lot of stores will automatically send out emails saying along the lines of “Hi, we noticed you added some items to your basket the other day/registered with us, but didn’t complete the order – perhaps this 10% coupon would help you?”.

If they don’t directly offer a coupon, they usually ask if there’s anything they can do to help – I suggest replying back with:

“Thanks, but I was trying to find a coupon you mailed me last year. I think I’ve deleted the email though – any chance you could hook me up?”

Half the time they’ll be more than happy to get you something in return for a sale. The key is in asking.

Searching For Coupons

This sounds a little obvious, but there must be so many people who just buy from internet sites without even searching for a coupon first, which is literally just throwing money away considering the amount of effort it takes. It used to be that coupon collection and thrift was a hobby for some – but now you’re just seconds away from coupons with the power of internet searching.

Sadly, the rise in popularity of coupon sites has also left a mountain of spammy clone sites that offer no more than simple affiliate links. So where do I personally go to find coupons?

RetaiMeNot.com (US) and sister site VoucherCodes.co.uk (UK): RetailMeNot has been around as long as I can remember and was one of the original coupon sites, so you know they’re legit.

FatWallet.com (US only): I use this for the latest GoDaddy coupons since I’m based in the UK.

MoneySavingExpert.com (UK): It’s nice to find UK specific site, and this one is an absolute treasure trove- not just for coupons but also freebies, a lively and helpful community forum, and general money saving advice. I have very few favorite sites on the internet – this is one of them – and I honestly can’t give much higher praise than that.

We’ve also covered quite a few coupons and deals-based sites before, so be sure to check those out when doing your Christmas shopping online.

Or… Don’t Give Into Consumerism

In all seriousness, the pressure each year to buy ever more expensive gifts for your loved ones is just disgusting. Christmas – or the winter solstice as some of us know it – is about spending quality time with family, eating and drinking well, staying cosy over the winter in front of a warm fire, and preparing yourself mentally for the year ahead. Spend time taking stock of things, reviewing your progress and goals for next year.

Whatever you do – don’t work yourself into debt for the latest gadget. But what about presents – are you supposed to just not give anything? Of course not. This year, I’ve been making homemade wines and biscuits for my family and friends, and I know they’ll be more appreciated than something shop bought. Put your time and effort into making something now, and the reward will be all that greater.

How about you? Do you have your eye on the latest iPad this Christmas, or will you be a non-consumer advocate too?

Do you have any favorite thrift loving sites you’ll be trawling for ideas this Christmas? Let us know in the comments, please!

Do you have an Android tablet? Do you feel you’re lacking in ways to buy stuff? Well, if that’s the case then Google is bringing a new app to your device that will provide you with access to 125 brands with which you can indulge in wanton consumerism.

The app is called Google Catalogs, and as the name implies, it seeks to bring a traditional catalog experience to your tablet and combine it with the instant gratification of online shopping.

Instead of having to call a number or drive to a store, items in the app’s catalogs can be purchased by tapping them, which directs the user to the brand’s online store.

Over 400 individual catalog issues are currently available from brands such as Nike and Nordstrom. Features of the app include notification of new issues, zoom (to examine product photos more closely) and the ability to create product collages for fun or to create a sort of wishlist.

Strangely, this app already debuted in August on the iPad, and only just now is coming to Android tablets. It is limited to Android versions 3.1 and above. Google also recommends an active Wi-Fi connection when using the app. It is, of course, free to download and browse.

Just what do you gift a geek? He may not have everything but he is certainly isn’t the guy who will appreciate a toaster when all he wants is to go hands on with the latest Kindle. When it comes to gifting a geek something for the season, be ultra-careful because these guys can be totally finicky.

How you select a gift for the geek in your life of course shows how much you care for him (or her). You can go trawling across the shops in your neibourhood or sit back in your armchair and let these (and many more) online shopping and recommendation sites help you out.

Presented below are five sites that offer a mixed bag of ways to search for the perfect geeky gift. From a Q&A site to a ‘crazy gifts’ one.

gdgt

gdgt takes the question-answer route to help you get to the best reviewed products out there. Gdgt uses crowd-wisdom to give you the inside dope from people who actually own and use the gadget you are searching for. The site follows the Wikipedia principle – that is, all products are reviewed and rated by its community. On gdgt, you can make lists where you can organize all the gadgets you have, want, used to have, or just want to keep an eye on. You can use gdgt lists as a starting point for asking question and triggering discussions. Gdgt has more than 8000 gadgets in its database. (Directory mention)

Uncrate

It’s a mix of geeky, cool, and offbeat…a digital magazine for guys who love stuff. Uncrate posts five “awesome” things each day and you can use them as hints to buy things. Expect to get stuff like the $13 ‘Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale’ (listed under Vices) to the $75,000 Orvis Timeless Airstream trailer for the guy who likes to hit the road. Uncrate is styled as a blog, and it’s a fun read if you are shopping for really offbeat ideas.

Giftmeister

If you are searching for technology gifts Giftmeister is a must-use tool. The search tool gives you two ways to search for the perfect tech gift – select age, gender, lifestyle, and budget; alternatively, search by keyword—brand, product number or type of device. Try out the turns on the lifestyle wheel – you get all sorts of options like the ‘Game Nut’, ‘Techno-Geek’, ‘Fotog’ etc. Giftmeister showcases featured gifts as well as deals for the day. The Price Drop Notification alert is really useful especially when discounts and deals start going out around the holiday season.

ReviewGist

ReviewGist touts itself as a comprehensive gadget review website. It helps you avoid going to multiple gadget sites in search of the best products as it scans the best review sources like (CNET, PC World etc.) across the internet and aggregates them together under the ReviewGist Score and ReviewGist Ranking. ReviewGist also helps you decide the best by giving you a face-off comparison tool to look at two products and their features. The ‘Find The Best’ lists are straight shortcuts to look at the best from the rest if you are running short of time. (Directory mention)

Genie Gadgets

Well, I just had to include this U.K. website because it features some of the crazy stuff geeks just might love. If the Appblaster iPhone gun is your idea of a gift or the clock that goes backwards, do give this site a browse. I could do with something more useful like the USB cup warmer or the Find It Keyfinder. You can use the Gift Genie to filter gifts for ‘Him’ or ‘Her’ according to budget and lifestyle. Then there’s the ‘Who Are You Shopping For’ gift selector tool to get just the right gift for the kid bro or the super mum.

Then again, you can leave these five sites alone and go through the gadget and gift ideas we have regularly posted at MakeUseOf.com. Here’s a selection which starts with the
