Although it is not an actual movie tie-in, Dredd vs Zombies was released for several gaming platforms in 2012 and has recently become available for Windows Phone. While there are similarities between the game and the movie (the single-word reference to the character’s name, the “clean-up” of enemies and the persistent progress through locations), this isn’t a tie-in. It’s something else entirely!

Those pesky zombies – even when they’re not described as such, have become the de facto earthbound opponent in many video games, and that’s the case in Extraction: Project Outbreak for Windows Phone in which a bunch of "bio-engineered weapons" have gone rogue and escaped. The result is that you take charge of a military contractor who drops in to exterminate the zombies, in a sort of action/strategy game combo.

I’m a huge supporter of games that focus more on skill and coordination than luck and grinding. That’s not to say I haven’t played my fair share of games like Everquest and World of Warcraft, but there’s just something rewarding about hitting a headshot and knowing that it wasn’t due to anything but your own talent. TeeWorlds is one of those games.

Smokin' Guns isn't like the usual military-style shooting games like Call of Duty or Metal of Honor. It also isn't like the surreal, monster-filled Doom-esque games that fill the gamestore shelves. No - this game is all about a gunfighter and his gun. Just trying to survive in a crazy, wild place where everyone else also has a gun with a bullet that has your name on it.

First-person shooters (or FPS) have long been a genre that is based around competition. Ever since the invention of multiplayer gaming, it only made sense to have shooters as a key genre. I once wrote an article about the best multiplayer shooters here on MakeUseOf, and while I stand by my choices, I think some shooters get lost in the shuffle. Not all first person shooters are about connecting to the Internet and shooting people with your friends.

While the list of games from Windows Phone continues to be rather modest, some great titles have been available since the platform launched. One of these is Rocket Riot, an energetic omni-directional shooter taking place in a two-dimensional, 8-bit style gaming world, brought to life with modern graphics and just the tiniest hint of three dimensional depth. Sure, it looks good, but it also plays well, and the soundtrack should also be experienced.

Sometimes, it seems as if Activision purposely releases a franchise until gamers hate it. Every year they pumped out a new Tony Hawk until everyone was sick of it. They did the same with Guitar Hero. All these years later, they seem to be doing the same with Call of Duty. I was feeling it with Modern Warfare 3. In fact, I played less of it than any Call of Duty game in the history of the franchise.

Sometimes the arenas in which your multiplayer battles are fought are as memorable as the games themselves. The mere mention of certain titles first reminds me not of the single player campaign or arsenal of guns but my favourite multiplayer map, as that’s where I tended to spend most of my time. Dying, repeatedly. Today we’ll be taking a short trip down memory lane and remembering some of the finest arenas in first person shooter history.

UberStrike is a fast-paced cross-platform MMOFPS (or 'online shooter' in short), with over five million registered users, and one million active players per month. It reminds at the same time of Counter Strike and of Quake, which is no easy feat.

Let's face it, shooting games are really fun. Kids love them! I wouldn't say that kids like them so much necessarily because of the violence. I think it's more about the whole "tag-you're-it" mentality. From when kids are very small, they start playing tag. Once kids get into playing online games, "tag-you're-it" turns into "bang-you're-dead". Morbid, I know, but still...follow along with my logic here.

One of the most undervalued genres on the iPhone is the dual joystick shooter. Twin stick shooters are a genre that has been around for as long as video game consoles have had two joysticks, but they were really popularized by the release of Geometry Wars on the Xbox 360. Since then, lots of developers have tried to get a piece of the dual joystick pie on every platform.

There aren't many quality 2D games around anymore. People seem to think that because the 3D technology is available to us, that it's the only design platform we should use.
