Electronic waste, or e-waste as it is more commonly known, is a huge problem facing both the developed and undeveloped world. Many old computer parts contain materials that are hazardous to the environment and burying your old Dell in a landfill is not helping the situation.

Instead of throwing it out, why not donate your old computer? One person’s box of outdated silicon is another’s treasure chest, and there are plenty of individuals, charities and recycling schemes willing to take your old machine away for free.

Your Local Donation Or Recycling Scheme

This one might require a bit of a searching on your part, but a local resource means you don’t have to drive far and the charity or organisation might even pick up your old computer themselves.

There are all sorts of local schemes throughout the world, and the best way to find them is through local government. Your local council or authority should be familiar with local recycling schemes or charities that take old tech and be willing to point you in the direction of some worthy causes.

Examples local to me (Melbourne, Victoria) include the Byteback scheme and Computerbank (cheap $30 PCs running Linux), and when I lived in the UK there were plenty of local charities and community groups willing to take in components, boxes and laptops for refurbishment.

Freecycle

Devised and established as a way of redistributing items that are no longer wanted or required, Freecycle operates all over the globe. This means you can join your local chapter and simply advertise your freebies (any non-living, legally saleable item) before whoever wants them comes forward to claim.

Freecycle uses Yahoo Groups as its main engine, so you’ll need a Yahoo account to give things away (though you can sign in with both Facebook and Google these days). It’s up to you who gets the goods and the claimant is responsible for collection.

Freecycle is a very environmentally friendly way of re-using pretty much anything you can think of and I can’t think of a single reason not to use the service!

When signing up for a Freecycle group on Yahoo, unless you’re happy to be emailed hundreds of times a day choose “Special Notices Only” for your email preferences, otherwise each and every offer will make its way into your inbox.

North America: About.com Donation Resources & EPA Advice

MakeUseOf is an international website with readers all around the globe, so I’ve split these next few resources by locale. About.com’s Women in Business section has produced a list of ten top donation and recycling organizations that are relevant to US and Canadian residents.

Included is the excellent Earth911 which searches for local businesses and partners willing to recycle or accept old machines, TechSoup, the World Computer Exchange (which annoyingly only has US and Canadian chapters) and Computers for Schools amongst others.

The EPA Advice link contains a few other resources and another facility for finding local recycling projects. Regardless of who you donate to, the resources on both sites are more than worthy of your unwanted electronics.

UK: IT For Charities Resources & Computer Aid International

If you’re in the UK and looking to donate an old PC then you’re bound to find somewhere nearby on the IT For Charities list of links above. Included are links to companies, not-for-profit organizations and bonafide charities who will all take your unwanted computers away.

Computer Aid International are another charity who do especially good work with the donations they receive. The equipment is taken in, refurbished and shipped off to countries where computers and technology are not as accessible. Thus far the charity has sent nearly 200,000 computers around the world to help poorer nations get online.

There are also a lot of community workshop programs and local outreach centres in the UK that use old computers for all sorts of tasks, including basic IT training and charity work.

Australia: Recycling Near You & GiveNow Resources

Recycling Near You is an Australian website that will help you recycle virtually anything, including old computers, monitors and accessories. The website uses your location to deliver relevant results that are local to you, including both charities, companies and recycling schemes.

Whilst the aforementioned website is probably the quickest way of finding a local recycling centre, there are some very valuable resources on GiveNow.com.au. Each is separated by state and region, making it easy to find the right links.

Worldwide: Retailers & Manufacturers

This is by no means a golden rule that is upheld everywhere, but many manufacturers and even retailers will now take in unwanted electronic equipment. Computer manufacturers such as Apple and Dell both have recycling schemes where in certain countries they will accept any brand of waste and waive a fee (note you might still be charged for pick-up).

Retailers similarly offer recycling schemes, especially when new products are purchased. These sorts of schemes are popular with large items like refrigerators and ovens, but it might also be worth asking about computer recycling. A benefit to using a retailer like this is that they will often come to your house, remove the equipment for you and swallow any recycling costs that may apply.

Whilst many international and national laws state that these products must be recycled responsibly, don’t forget that this isn’t quite the same as donating to charity.

Conclusion

There are plenty of charities, organizations and companies who will accept your old computers to prevent them ending up in a landfill somewhere, so the next time you get rid of a PC or monitor don’t forget to look up both local and national schemes. By recycling or donating to a good cause you can feel great about helping someone out and even better about the fact that your old kit isn’t sitting in a landfill.

How are you going to get rid of your next PC? Any other resources we should know about to donate old computers? Have you recycled a PC before? Let us know in the comments.

It’s a scary world out there, and the best way to go through it is by wearing clothes. Sure, there are a few exceptions to this statement, but we’ll leave those alone… However, you may be looking for some places to pick up some free t-shirts or something a little on the higher end of things.

Today, I’ve got five websites that you can find some free clothes on, and the best part is that each of them are totally free of charge (I know, I know – you’re on the edge of your seat).

Freecycle

We’ve talked a little bit about Freecycle on MakeUseOf before, so I just wanted to get it out of the way since you might have already heard about it. The site was developed as a way for people to get rid of their unneeded items in a much more environmentally-friendly way than dumping them in a landfill. However, along with recycling used computer gadgets and such, you can actually grab free clothes from Freecycle.

Essentially, Freecycle is all about giving away what you don’t need and getting stuff that you do – for free. About the only thing that somewhat frustrated me with this site was the lack of a legitimate search function, but after a few clicks, I found a few dress shirts near my town that were being given away free of charge! Furthermore, you can post “Wanted” ads for clothing that you may need.

Freegle

So you may have noticed that Freecycle is starting to have footprints across the world. Well, there’s more good news for my UK friends. Freegle is a site that is… well… it’s just like Freecycle. I could actually copy and paste the above two paragraphs here, replace each mention of Freecycle with the word “Freegle”, and it would be a perfect description. Unfortunately, my editor Mark wouldn’t appreciate this very much.

From what I understand, Freegle actually used to be a part of Freecycle, but something went down and the UK crew split. However, both sites are wonderful (but as a note, Freegle’s web design is much cleaner and more user-friendly).

Craigslist

Oh hey, Craigslist! How did you get on this MUO article, too? Yes, we’ve covered the list of Craig quite a few times here on MUO, but there’s one item you should take note of on Craigslist’s front page. Right under the “For Sale” section of the site, you’ll see a link that simply says “free”.

Well… I bet you’re wondering where that’s going to lead you, right? This section of the site is full of free stuff just ready for you to take. After a quick search in my area, I found shoes, baby clothes, and even adult-sized clothes. One pretty nice item was an advertisement by a thrift store that was giving away a ton of free clothes for one day only. Make sure you take a look at the ads in your location.

Free Stuff Channel

The site mentioned here is a whole lot like a site called Hey, It’s Free! that I reviewed a few weeks ago. Basically, the creators of the site go around the Internet in search for magical items such as free promotional products and special offers coupons. Pretty cool.

However, if there’s anything that businesses like to make, it’s t-shirts, right? (We even have a few on MUO.) It also seems as if companies love giving away their t-shirts. Fortunately, in addition to everything else the site has to offer, the Free Stuff Channel goes around looking for promo items such as these. The site is updated daily, so you could have quite a large wardrobe before the year is over.

Cool Freebie Links

Cool Freebies Links looks like a site from the nineties and it also uses my least favorite font – Comic Sans – but it has quite a bit of free stuff that is collected in the same fashion as the Free Stuff Channel. It’s a lot of text to read, but each bit of it is very valuable.

I’m not entirely sure how often the site updates, but they had quite a collection of promo clothing for you to grab if you’re lucky. Look through their listings, and you may even find other sites for other free materials.

Conclusion

Well that’s that, my thread-mooching friends. If you’re low on cash, you definitely have quite a few options to choose from for free clothes. Sure, with some of these you may have to put up with a company logo but that’s better than running around naked, right?

What other sites do you use to find free clothing? Did you find anything pretty cool on the ones shown here?

When you’ve spent quite a few bucks on your MP3 player or smartphone, the last thing you need is an overpriced accessory that you can easily make yourself. Plenty of individuals on the Internet have showcased a multitude of creative uses for common household items that can quickly prop your device. Some of these DIY items can take more time than others, so we’ve collected popular stand ideas from around the web that won’t require a lot of your time.

That’s right, any stand ideas that require superglue, drilling, etc, are off this list because we wanted easy projects that can be readily repeated in the future if needed. Many of the ones we did stick with for this list will include items that you most likely already have. You might even find some of these items in your room, left gathering dust in a corner. Find out how to make good use of and recycle old household objects.

MiniDV Tape Case (Can Carry Earbuds, Too!)

If you have a MiniDV tape case lying around, simply remove the cardboard lining the case, and flip it over. This is perhaps one of the simpler docks you can get for almost free.

Observant readers might notice that the case dimensions might not fit the smartphone or MP3 player in landscape mode. Fear not, as a wise YouTube user has shown how relatively easy it is to adjust the case.

Paper Clip Stand

Take a regular paper clip (if you have a plastic-coated one, even better), straighten it out, and bend it so it’ll look like this.

The full instructions are on this short video.

Business Card Stand

This design requires you to maneuver some scissors around a lined business card. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

The hack author has provided careful instructions up on Instructables so be sure to check out that page for more information.

Plastic Membership/Old Credit Card Stand

Finally, you’ll be able to recycle all those membership cards you’ve accumulated over the years. A few bends will make a simple plastic card an excellent stand for your device.

If you’ve got expired credit cards, you can also do this after completely marking or scratching off your information. For more instructions, go to this Instructables post.

Freebie Plastic Card Stand

You know those fake and less rigid plastic cards mailed by credit card companies that you usually toss without thinking twice? Next time you get one, don’t throw it out as you might be able to construct a simple stand for your iPod.

The trick is to cut the plastic card in 3 equal parts, make incisions as detailed by the instructional video and interlock them together. It’s quite a good way to recycle things, if you ask me.

Binder Clip Stand

Using two binder clips, you can make a nice and easy stand that will be just as portable as most other designs on this list.

Lego Block Stand (Allows You To Plug Earbuds)

The classic toy can make a lot of structures, including a good stand for your iPod. If you want to follow a specific design, this one might be a good start as it provides a way for you to plug your earbuds.

There are plenty more models on the web. Here’s an interesting one that allows you to prop your iPod in many angles and in both landscape and portrait modes securely.

Here’s another model that was designed by a clever kid.

For full instructions, be sure to check out the original video.

Fancy Paper Stand

Here’s one that might look better than other DIY solutions. If you have special resume paper or any kind of thicker paper, even cardboard, you can try this template provided by French designer Dessine moi un objet’s blog.

This is perhaps one of the more elegant DIY stands that doesn’t look too DIY so the few minutes cutting out the paper will be well worth it. Check out the instructional video here.

Now that you’ve seen a few imaginative designs, tell us about what you use. Have you come up with some creative, environmentally-friendly stands for your iPod/iPhone/smartphone? Let us know in the comments!

The section features more than 20 DIY projects by gardening experts. Find out how to grow your own herb garden and start seedlings indoors.

Favorite projects: iPlanter, an upside down planter made from the old plastic bag, and Fern Nursery, a green way to recycle a tennis ball container into an in-house garden on your windowsill.

The best thing about the site is that each project has a detailed step-by-step guide on how to implement each idea.

Favorite project: Build a bug box (or bee hotel) and have fun watching bees come to live there (quite an unexpected project for gardeners as they usually get annoyed by bugs, but what a neat idea!)

DIY Gadgets / Gardening

Try a lightweight, beautiful Linux distro that works on very old hardware. Bodhi Linux can run on processors with only 300 mhz so imagine how well it will work on your machine. With the Enlightenment desktop environment, Bodhi looks great and runs light. With the Ubuntu repositories, Bodhi has access to a plethora of quality free software. With a little work, it can become your perfect desktop.

You’ll need to install your favorite software of course, and you might want to spend some time tweaking things. In many ways Bodhi reminds me of time spent tweaking early versions of Ubuntu to make everything work just right. We’ve shown you visually pleasing Linux distributions that use Enlightenment, and those are worth checking out. Bodhi Linux is different because it’s up to date, completely free to use and compatible with the Ubuntu repositories.

Choose Your Look

Bodhi, it seems, is committed to choice above all. The distribution boots quickly, and the first thing it presents you with is a decision. With various desktop modes to choose from and a few themes to check out as well, you’ll be wanting to explore a little:

Pick a profile based on your needs and you’ll quickly see the main desktop for Bodhi. Here’s how it looked based on my decisions:

This familiar (read: Windows-like) layout is unique in the world of Enlightenment-based distros, but don’t worry, you can customize the desktop quite a bit if this isn’t your style.

Use Your Desktop

So how does one use this thing? You’ll be wanting to pull up the menu to launch applications. You can do this by clicking anywhere on the desktop or by clicking the button.

Yep, it’s a start button. The menu, to begin with, is sparse, but you can explore the distribution by customizing the look and feel. Much of the fun of older Linux distributions was experimenting with the look and feel in order to get everything set up exactly the way you wanted it. Bodhi recaptured this spirit for me; you should explore it yourself.

Installing Software

Like I said earlier: there’s not a lot of software installed by default. That’s intentional, and is related to the previously mentioned commitment to choice. To quote Bodhi’s about page:

At Bodhi Linux, we believe in User Choice, so we don’t give you three pre-installed mail clients to choose from. It does not mean that there is every browser possible at the click of a button. What it does mean is that we have our own repositories and these are accessible via the apt-get command line, GUI package manager or better still our online software store ( see “Add Software” in menu above!). Out of the box we give you the tools to access the resources you need to be able to build your system.

So choice means the freedom to install whatever software you like, and there is quite a bit of freedom there to be sure. A handy website gives you quick access to many familiar programs:

The site makes use of aptURL to provide single-click installs, but offline installation packs are also available if you prefer.

Want more control than a website with download links can give you? Don’t worry, all the standard Ubuntu package management tools are here for you to use. Synaptic, for example:

You’ll find apt-get works from the command line as well, so there’s another choice for you.

Conclusion

What really impressive about this distribution is how fast it runs. This is Ubuntu stripped down without any sacrifice in terms of look and feel. Here are the minimal hardware specs:

300mhz i386 Processor.

128MB of RAM.

1.5GB HD space

If a computer is still running today it almost certainly meets those criteria, so there’s no harm in giving Bodhi a chance. Download it now.

What do you think of Bodhi? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, along with any Enlightenment tweaks you can offer.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/oldandroidthumb.jpg">If anyone were to craft a Toy Story homage based on smartphones, it would be a depressing tale. Smartphones are bought, loved, and then discarded – often all within two or three years. While these older smartphones can sometimes be sold or traded, they’re usually left to be forgotten in a bottom drawer or the bottom of a trash can.

These out of date smartphones aren’t useless, however. They can often be adapted to other purposes, makes it possible to squeeze a little extra value from them.

Portable Audio Player

Even the oldest smartphones have sufficient power to play portable audio, and the small size and excellent battery life makes discarded devices the perfect candidates for an audio player.

If you’re interested in using your Android in this manner, I suggest downloading a mobile player such as Winamp to manage your mobile library. Put your chosen player’s widget on the primary screen and then par down the number of screens to just one.

However, you don’t have to stop there. While you may not have data service, you can still connect to WiFi, which means your Android can access online radio services like Pandora and can use podcast management software like BeyondPod.

Handheld Gaming System

Chances are your newer Android smartphone can play more games than your older one, or play them more smoothly. So why turn your old device into a game system?

Battery life is one reason. Games require the display to be one and often place a heavy load on the hardware, which can tear through a battery in three or four hours. If you use your phone constantly, having an alternative device that can be used solely for games can take a load off your primary phone’s battery.

This can also be a great toy to hand off to a young child. He or she will be able to play games, and you don’t have to worry if the device is smashed – it may cause some heartache, but at least you won’t be out some cash.

WiFi Phone

Your old smartphone may not have data service, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make calls. By using Skype, it’s possible to make calls via a WiFi connection, which will continue to work. Google Voice is also an option.

Whatever you choose to use, your old phone can be used just like a normal one as long as it’s on your WiFi network and the VoIP app you are using is active. The WiFi phone can be used as a backup and/or used as a landline replacement.

Portable Hard Drive

Android phones connect to PCs for data transfer quite easily, which makes them candidates for use as mobile storage devices. My current Thunderbolt, for example, has almost 40GB of storage space available. Although older phones may not have quite that much, they likely can support at least 16GB with a SD card upgrade.

Old phones are not the most ideal portable storage solutions, as they’re larger than USB drives. However, because a smartphone has a display it’s possible to browse the files currently on the device, something no USB drive or portable hard drive can do.

Alarm Clock

If all else fails, you may want to throw your old smartphone on your night stand – and leave it there.

Using a smartphone as an alarm clock is nothing new. However, dedicating an old smartphone to use as an alarm clock has its advantages. Your phone no longer has to be beside you at night, which means you can eliminate the annoyance of 4am texts from not-so-sober friends.

If you want to dedicate yourself to this use, you can even buy a dock for your old Android phone. This will keep your device charged, and some docks offer speakers as well, turning your device into a bedside audio player as well.

Conclusion

These five uses are great ways to utilize an old Android phone, but they’re surely not the only ones. If you have an idea that you think is excellent, please let us know in the comments!

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/62003488_2eb0557816.jpg">Don’t chuck out your old computer, just yet. Though it may not seem like it, there are still some jobs it can serve. It’s not obsolete just yet, whatever the tech companies would rather have you believe. In the fast-moving world of technology, a year may seem like a decade. Gadgets are thrown out every year, sometimes with little consideration for whether they are still useful or not.

That 5-year old computer may seem like a snail, but even a snail can get to the other side.

1. Turn It Into A Web Server

Many of us here probably own a website. Well, if you’re up to the challenge, you can set up your own server to serve your websites from. Having your own server gives you the advantage of controlling what software to use, as well as the freedom to upgrade flexibly. Running out of server space? Just add another hard drive! Are the pages loading too slowly? Just add more RAM!

Dave has previously detailed how to build a Linux web server in two parts.

2. Experiment With Viruses

If you can’t turn it into a web server, you can use it as your torture machine. Abuse it anyway you want, install anything and everything. If you ever saw some free app you like the look of, but aren’t sure whether it’s a virus or not, you now have a sandbox to test it in. This is a real sandbox, not those fancy software sandbox techniques that are so common nowadays.

It doesn’t even have to be a virus. If you’re experimenting with dangerous software, you can do all your damage here. Just make sure to keep a Windows install disc handy.

3. Modify It

The next thing to try is to turn it into art. At least you can appreciate the supple curves of your computer as it sits there collecting dust. There are many mods on the Internet, such as these ones here. Some mods also serve a purpose. For example, you can turn the computer into a photo frame. If it’s new enough to have a built-in WiFi card, you can also connect it to your Flickr feed, or something similar.

4. Destroy It

Failing any useful task that the computer can handle, you can enjoy watching it die. Why just throw it away? How about destroying it?

If you haven’t got a new computer yet, your old computer may help you raise the cost of the new one. It may not be worth the new one, but the amusement of blowing it up certainly is, as this YouTube user has proven.

5. Recycle it

For the more environmentally-conscious, there’s always the option to recycle it. First, make sure all the useful and surviving parts are out. This could be used later. You never know, your new computer’s RAM may fail and 2GB of working RAM is better than 8GB of non-working RAM. Before you attempt that though, make sure your new computer can take your older one’s RAM. Also make sure that any personal sensitive information has been securely wiped from the hard drive.

There are many computer recycling programs around. You can go to a manufacturer or to your region’s local recycling program. Here’s Apple’s recycling page, which also holds a list for some US states. Saikat wrote a great post last year detailing 10 websites that help you recycle or reuse old stuff.

So do you know of any other possible uses for an old computer that we haven’t listed here? Or have you tried one of the above? If so, how did it go?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intro8.jpg" /><img class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intro8.jpg?323f2c"alt="uses for a smartphone"/>These days we change our mobiles, laptops, cars and decor more than ever. If you’re on a rolling 12 month mobile contract, chances are you’ll get a brand spanking new smartphone each and every year.

This results in a drawer full of disused cellular devices, none of which are as good as your current iPhone, Android or Windows Phone 7 device. However, many of these old bits of tech can still be put to good use in some way or another.

Let’s be honest, the first iPhone, early Android devices and the Symbian platform are pretty long in the tooth by now. Here are 5 options to explore the next time you find an old mobile phone.

Skype Phone

There are a few good mobile versions of the popular Skype VoIP and messaging platform and there are also dedicated Skype phones. If you have an old Wi-Fi compatible smartphone (3G would work too, but you’ll need a SIM and credit) then why not turn it into a dedicated Skype device for your home?

You can text, call other Skype users for free or even buy some well-priced Skype Out credit and call landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world.

I recently used an old Symbian device for this purpose whilst my girlfriend was overseas. I was able to make calls on a real phone (which is a bit more personal than staring at a screen, distracted by your email) at a fraction of the price of calling from a mobile or landline contract.

Remote Control

An old smartphone can also function as a handy remote control for your media centre or computer. There are plenty of free applications available on both Apple’s App Store and the Android Marketplace. If you’re interested check out the fantastic Gmote for Android or our list of iPhone remote control apps.

XBMC users will be pleased to know there are apps available for both Android and iPhone, and Boxee users can control their TV with the iPhone App.

Older Symbian phones can be used as remotes with ControlFreak, though there seems to be little for newer 5th generation S60 handsets (though there’s always the Ovi Store).

Portable Audio

Many old smartphones either come with a lot of storage or have expandable memory card slots. If said device supports high capacity MicroSD cards then you can pack some serious storage for a decent price.

You can put this storage to good use with plenty of music and podcasts and choose a good app with which to listen to them. Set your phone’s profile to flight mode, disable Bluetooth, dim the backlight and battery life should be tolerable.

Not a fantastic permanent solution, but great if your iPod’s out of order or maybe as a Bluetooth-ready audio player for the car.

USB Storage & Mass Transfer

Most smartphones will mount in a USB mass storage mode for transfer of data to a PC. For an interesting twist on the small portable hard-drive or potentially large USB stick an old smartphone may suffice.

It’s especially handy if you ever need to review information on-the-go, with support for images, text documents, PDFs and so on commonplace on a lot of devices (even old ones). What’s more if your PC supports Bluetooth after pairing the two you’ll be able to transfer wirelessly, with a couple of clicks.

Video & Audio

It might sound a bit obvious, but the camera on that old smartphone can be useful too. Even if it doesn’t take crystal-clear video, your old device could be used with something like Qik to stream video live to the Internet.

If you simply want to use your phone as a webcam then you’ll need an app like IP Webcam for Android or SmartCam. You’ll then have a handy wireless webcam to mount or run around with as you see fit.

Even the basic dictaphone function on most smartphones (and the plenty of apps available that do the same job) can be useful, and quicker than typing out a note too.

Finally

Don’t forget that if you really don’t think you’re going to be using your old smartphone then you an always sell or recycle it. Depending on the condition of your phone it may still be saleable on an auction site like eBay. Even if you can’t sell it you can still get some money from recycling, or choose to donate it to charity.

Do you have any old smartphones lying about? Thought up any genius uses for them? Let us know in the comments.

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Earth-recycling.jpg">As a website we run off a server probably kept in a large databank somewhere. Servers do have a hefty carbon footprint, so it’s a bit strange for us to be preaching about eco-consciousness. But hey, we have to get the word out.

And the word is that although the web is contributing something to global warming, it’s also the loudest bugle playing in support of it. Even Greenpeace has a website after all. But this post is not about demerits of technology, but the meritorious ways it can be put to use for the environment. One way is to promote recycling or reusing stuff like electronic gizmos instead of making them fodder for landfills or a rag pickers livelihood.

If your eco-conscience starts to prick, then head out to any of these ten web resources. They can lend a green hand to help you recycle or reuse old stuff and protect our environment.

Story of Stuff

Let’s start by puncturing our consumerist grandstanding by some scenes for thought. For instance, The Story of Electronics is a voice against the electronics industry’s “˜design for the dump’ mentality and advocates product take backs to spur companies to make less toxic, more easily recyclable and longer lasting products. The educational clip asks the community to petition companies for responsible recycling.

eCycler

If you give away stuff, then this site can be of help because it connects you with others who may be willing to take them. So, you can extend any stuff’s appointed date with the landfill by listing all your items and giving them away to others in your local area. You can also participate by picking up stuff and selling them to recycling plants for cash. Going green takes on a different meaning! (See our directory mention).

Freecycle

Freecycle is a large mailing list with 7,603,875 members around the world. The not-for-profit group aims to connect givers with receivers via local groups. You can join one in your area and see the items that are being given away. You can mail across your own stuff.

Recycle Bank

Recycle Bank follows the principle of 3 R’s ““ Recycle, Redeem, and Reward. It rewards households for recycling stuff by gifting RecycleBank Points that can be used to shop at over 1,500 local and national businesses. Points are earned according to the material that gets recycled. Recycle Bank collaborates with the local municipalities on one hand and retailers on the other. According to Wikipedia, Recycle Bank is in 125,000 households in the United States in over 35 municipalities (the UK has a separate login site).

Call 2 Recycle

Cell phones and batteries get dumped by the dozen every day. They not only consume landfills but the compounds used in their manufacture are a long term source of toxicity. Call2Recycle tries to lessen the impact as the only free rechargeable battery and cell phone collection program in North America. The program is run by a non-profit. The program covers 30,000 collection sites in the U.S. and Canada where you can drop off any cell phone with or without batteries.

Recycle Now

This is a UK based website that seeks to promote recycling through information and promotion. You can educate yourself by watching videos on how some household stuff is recycled. Find out if certain products can be recycled easily; and where. Then a small section promotes learning about recycling at school.

Gigoit

The name stands for “˜Garbage In, Garbage Out’. The site covers the US, Canada, and UK in its reuse and recycling efforts. There’s a small search box which is locates reusable stuff people may be willing to give away. You can specify the distance and the search for the stuff. Similarly you can list your own stuff and save it from reaching the landfills. Gigoit distributes all sorts of reusable items.

Selling Bin

You can tap into a network of recyclers and sell your old stuff via a buyback offer by these retailers. Electronics to things like books, movies, and even jewelry are covered. The idea is simple – instead of one recycler, you have many who email you a buyback offer after you send in an email with the product details. The reply lets you know the offer and shipping information.

Take My Mac

An Apple gizmo is a lifestyle device and it’s safe to say that when the latest version comes out, you wouldn’t be caught with one that’s a couple of generations old. Takemymac.com takes back your old Apple device in any condition and even pays you for it. If it is of no use, then the service recycles it for you for free. They even offer to wipe the data securely from your device. The site also has a rewards program if you refer others. This service is for the US only.

Greener One

The product information web service helps out by providing a green index for lots of products on its roster. As a user you can also contribute to the knowledge bank. The green index looks at factors like – are the materials used harmful to the environment? What kind and how much waste is created in making the product? Can the product be recycled? Does the manufacturer have a recycling program? Is the product bio-degradable?, etc. Consumers can make informed decisions and decide on reuse or recycling or not even buy an environmentally sensitive product in the first place.

The sheer numbers of web resources that talk about recycling, reusing, and environmental safety prove that the green movement is well and truly on. Eco apps like these and many more that you will find in our directory are setting the pace. We have to give it just a push more. Would you agree on the virtues of recycling to protect our environment?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/shutterstock_26572237.jpg" />I must admit, I have an old iMac G3 computer that has been sitting unused in my son’s bedroom for about five years. Though he’s tinkered with it a few times, I have not once considered finding a new home for it.

What would you do with old computers? Tina wrote about some cool uses for old computers and laptops. Tim Lenahan showed you 3 things you can do with old monitors.

If you’re like me and you have an old desktop or laptop computer in your garage, or one that is taking up space like an antique clock in your office, you should consider donating that old computer to one of the recycling programs describe below.

Best Buy

Perhaps the most accessible place for recycling your computer is through Best Buy”˜s e-cycle program. Best Buy accepts all old/unwanted consumer electronics, including desktop and laptop computers, for free. However, it does charge $10 for computers with a monitor of 32″ and under. Best Buy says that consumers will “instantly receive a $10 Best Buy gift card in exchange for the recycling fee.”

Best Buy delivers the recycled items to one of its third-party logistics, which in turn determines if donated items can be re-purposed or recycled.

Before you take your computer the store, the contents (all files and personal data) of the hard drive must be erased. You can pay a Best Buy Geek Squad agent to do this for you, or you can do it yourself. Check out this Geek Squad tutorial video about disposing of your hard drive, and also this MUO article on “How to Completely & Securely Erase Your Hard Drive [Windows]”

Best Buy also partners with other recycling programs for other e-waste and electronic equipment, including TVs, CDs/DVDs, appliances, inkjet cartridges, and rechargeable batteries.

National Cristina Foundation

If you want to make sure that the computer(s) you denote finds a new home for reuse, check out the non-profit National Cristina Foundation, which “directs donations of used computer equipment to registered non-profit organizations, schools, and public agencies throughout the United States,” for purposes of job training, at risk students, people with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged people.

This Foundation does not charge for accepting donations, but it does have some specific requirements for what it will accept. It particularly wants Penitum III and Higher CPUs, and complete hardware systems for PCs and Mac Desktops. Specific requirements are listed here.

Silicon Valley Recycling Used Technology

The Silicon Valley Recycling Used Technology program accepts desktop and laptop computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, hardware components and other related items, which it repairs and in turn provides to K-16 schools for use and learning purposes.

You can drop off your computer at their center or make arrangements by calling 510-979-7479.

Dell Reconnect

Dell Reconnect “accepts any brand of computer equipment in any condition from consumers and recycles it for free.” More information about what it accepts can be found here.

Similar to Best Buy, Dell Reconnect has over 2,000 donation locations in the U.S. for which you can drop off your equipment. Dell Reconnect insures that donated, environmentally sensitive material is not hauled off to landfills. It works with Goodwill, which provides reusable computer equipment to its “job training, employment placement services and other community-basd programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges.”

World Computer Exchange

If you, your company, university, library, or organization has a significant amount of computer equipment to donate, World Computer Exchange works to get such equipment to “570 of Partner organizations in 71 developing countries.”

How you can help, and the specific computers World Computer Exchange is looking for are listed here. It currently has 25 chapters throughout the U.S, which can be contacted to accept your donations.

The above programs and organizations are making it easy for us to not simply haul off our unused, idle computers to landfills or even to our basements or closets. If you know of other programs that accept donations of computers and related equipment, let us know about it.
