Although most of us use Google on a daily basis only few people really know about various useful search operators that Google offers. There is a lot more to this tiny search field than you might think.

I assume you already know that Google can be also used as calculator, currency converter and even measurement unit converter. But what about using Google to search for nearby pizzerias or checking movie showtimes in local cinemas.

Collaboration and good communication is the key when it comes to getting the job done in time and the way you want it. Seamless communication can be difficult to achieve when you are working in a group. There are quite a few collaboration tools available on the web these days to increase collaboration and work on projects easier over the wire. When it comes to communicating your great idea in a meeting or simply putting your point across to the group or conducting a quick poll, check out notifu.
Over the last 6 months we have run several polls asking you to vote on your favorite software for different tasks. You guys have done a great job, with an average of 700-900 votes, each of our polls was a success. Thank you!
So without further ado, here are the best software and shortcuts according to MakeUseOf readers. (I listed top choices for each poll, for more options go to the poll page.)

Everyone has an email address these days. Most of us spend more time dealing with emails then on any other website. So the poll question for today is How Do You Check Your Email? Do you check it online or do you use a desktop client such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird?
Since most MakeUseOf readers are likely to have tried different email programs and desktop clients the resuts should be rather interesting. So make sure to vote!
Do You Check Your Email Online or Use a Desktop Client ?

Why do you prefer checking your email online or on the desktop ? Let us know in the comments.
Time for another MakeUseOf Poll, and this time we want to know how do you backup important files and folders on your computer.
Are you using default Windows Backup Utility? Maybe some other desktop backup program to automatically backup selected files and folders to external hardrive or USB thumbdrive? Or do you prefer to have a fresh copy of important folders online? Whatever it is, share it with us below.

Now back to today’s poll. The poll question for today is what photo sharing website do you use?
Are you a Flickr fan? Google Picasa user? Or do use something less popular like recently mentioned Photie (which unlike the popular services offers unlimited stoage space). Tell us about it.

I am sure most of you have already heard about and even tried Google Chrome. Everyone was talking about it.
Last week Tina wrote an excellent article highlighting key features of this new web browser. If you haven’t read it yet, make sure to check it out.
When compared to the browser of choice, Chrome does offer a few new features like in-built browser task manager, tab processes, incognito browsing, different tab positioning, faster JavaScript engine and so on. On the other hand there is no community behind it and absolutely NO EXTENSIONS.
Time for another MakeUseOf Poll, so get ready to vote. The goal of this poll is to discover those little known yet very useful web apps from Big Brother Google you didn’t know about. So make sure to vote on your Top 5.
We deliberately left out the popular ones including Youtube, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Reader, Orkut, Blogger and obviously Google Search.

Here goes another MakeUseOf Poll. This time we are voting on image and photo editing tools.
Since everyone has different needs when it comes to working with photos, the idea behind today’s poll is not to get the best tool but rather see which image editing app is more popular among tech-savvy MakeUseOf users.
As usual, in case you’re aware of any good tools that were not included in the poll then please tell us about them in comments.
Please Vote!

Last week we did a poll on Top 5 Firefox shortcuts. It turned out great, after 550 + votes we had our top 5 shortcuts.
The cool part about running such a poll was that it especially helped those users who had never used shorcuts before. Instead of randomly jumping at the long list of shotcuts ,they could see what are the top recommended ones and start with them instead.
Today we are extending the top shortcuts idea to Windows. This time, tell us about your favorite Windows shortcuts. So please vote on your top Windows shortcuts below.
It’s time for another MakeUseOf Poll. This time instead of voting on the best program for the job we are asking you to tell us about your favorite shortcuts.
Like any other widely used piece of software Firefox has its own set of keyboard shortcuts. Some of them are quite popular while some are ones you may never have heard about. If you have been using Firefox for some time now I am sure you have your own must-use list. Tell us about them.
As you have probably guessed this poll is about browser toolbars. Do you have any browser toolbar installed ? Which one? Why do you use it? Share it with MakeUseof readers.

Note that we have listed only the popular ones here. I am pretty sure there are other great little-known toolbars we don’t know about. We are here to find them out. So if you aware of any good toolbar that might be helpful to others please post it in comments.
You can select up to 2 options!

It’s time for another poll. Today we want to ask you about disk defrag tools. What program do you use to defragment your hard drive?
Anyone who’s owned a Windows PC for a long time will probably agree that eventually you have to defrag the hard drive. As you move files around and keep installing new programs your disk gets fragmented. Fragmented files take longer to run and results in slower performance. So if you want to keep the hard drive at its peak performance, make sure to defragment your computer once in a while.
Everyone has a music player, it’s one of those programs that most of us use on a daily basis. I am sure you must have tried several music players over the years and now found your favorite. So like we did in the past, we are asking you to vote on it. Help us find the best music player out there (at least among MakeUseOf readers).
I tried to include all popular music players, but I am pretty sure I must have missed a few. If your favorite media player is not listed then please let us know about it in comments. Thanks!
It’s time for another Poll. You guys did an excellent job on every previous poll, both in terms of votes and comments. Thank You! Now help us make MakeUseOf a better place by sharing your thoughts about list-style articles.
Here on MakeUseOf we have a thing towards lists. Most of us like them. Unlike other websites we tend to keep our lists short and actually review the ‘best of’. Plus we always profile only FREE stuff. So if our article says top 3 sources to get free document templates OR the best places to watch documentary movies online, those are the best sources. Nevertheless we want to find out what you, our readers, think about it. Lets us know below, all it takes is one vote.
It’s time for another MUO Poll. Every poll we had so far was a smashing success. You guys did a great job. Thanks to you, we had a clear winner in every case.
This time we want to ask you about instant messaging programs. What is your IM client of choice ? Do you use a multi-protocol client that supports multiple accounts (i.e Pidgin) or prefer to stick with a single-network chat client like MSN, Gtalk, Yahoo Messenger etc. Let us know below. You can select up to 2 clients.

Last time we asked for your favorite Antivirus software. About 40% (nearly 300 votes) of voters have choosen AVG FREE Antivirus. Another great finding was that 3 out of top 4 choices were free ones.
Today we want to run a similar poll and find out what’s your favorite firewall software. Or whether you have one at all.

Similar to Antivirus, Firewall has an essential role in keeping your PC secure from online threats. Unfortunately not many people realize that. So the purpose of this poll is to find out what is the most popular firewall software used by MUO users. Again, please vote !
It’s time for another poll. Today we are asking you to vote on your favorite antivirus program. Actually the goal is to find out what is the most popular free antivirus program among MUO users. So please vote !
If you don’t have a favorite antivirus program and you’re using the one that came with your PC then you can see what others have to say about it. If you decide to give something a try then check the antivirus download links right below the poll.
So here you go …

Our first poll was a blast. Over 1200 votes! We figured out that Internet Explorer is even less popular then we thought. Which suggests that you would rather see a story about Apple’s Safari or Opera rather than IE.
It’s time for another poll. The question of the day is “Do you Download TV shows ?” Since most of us are major TV show addicts, this one should be even more interesting. We all use different ways to go about it, some folks go with subscription-based services, more tech-aware users use torrents, others stream stuff online etc. So how do you do it ?
Do you download TV shows ? If so how do you do it ?

Welcome to the first Make Use Of Poll. From now on once every 2-3 days we plan to run a quick poll asking you about your favorite web apps and software.
Not only will this help some of the readers discover a cool website or software they didn’t know about, but it may also provide us with some article ideas. For instance, if at one point 70% of readers say they don’t use a feed reader (for example), this would signal to us to run an introductory post on feedreaders and why people should use them.
