Sony's PlayStation 4 announcement has come and gone. Most of our lives have gone back to normal, and gamers have returned to blissfully enjoying the latest awesome games on their current generation consoles, content to hang out and wait for the holiday season when the next round of consoles will make their way onto store shelves (and promptly sell out due to inevitable supply issues). Sony has finally announced the PlayStation 4, ushering in the end of the longest console generation in recent memory. Sony showed plenty of exciting games at the press conference, such as Bungie's Destiny, a new Infamous, and even Diablo III. However, there are some franchises that used to be synonymous with Sony platforms that are sitting idly and watching a new generation of gamers get into the hobby with no knowledge of their greatness.

I used to play most of my games on the computer. All of that changed when the next (that is, current) generation of consoles came out. For one, these devices had a considerable assortment of games and great graphics. Another consideration - perhaps most vital in putting me over the edge towards console gaming - was the price-quality. In terms of hardware, consoles function as an opposite of gaming PCs.

After months of speculation Sony recently entered the eighth generation of video games hardware, joining Nintendo, which kicked it all off by releasing the Wii U at the end of 2012. The not-very-imaginatively-titled PlayStation 4 will be released before the year is out, with PlayStation fans able to look forward to the 2013 holiday season with gusto. Sony chose to reveal its next-gen plans during a huge conference titled PlayStation Meeting 2013.

Sony has confirmed the existence of the PlayStation 4 (or PS4, as they generally spoke of it). The new console, which Sony describes as a "supercharged" PC, will feature an x86-based CPU and an "enhanced" GPU. It will also come with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

I recently wrote an article about the biggest rip offs in the history of video games. In it, I was quick to point out that Microsoft charges $60 a year for a service that simply grants players the ability to play games online and a few other little perks. Sony, on the other hand, has an incredible service called PlayStation Plus that costs $50 a year, and gives users some cool extras, while playing games online remains free.

Since its initial release, things have slowed down a great deal for the PlayStation Vita. The system is just not getting enough games to create a compelling argument to drop the money on one. The PS2 is officially dead, with Sony ceasing production of the last-gen console on December 31, 2012. In Japan at least, when the existing stock of hardware runs out, Sony will not be offering any more consoles to retailers. Not that the PS2 has done badly, with a lifespan of 12 years, six as Sony's flagship console, six as the budget machine playing second fiddle to its successor, the PS3. The PS2 hardware may be dead, but the games are not.

The PS3 has a deserved reputation for the quality and quantity of its exclusives, with the Xbox 360 lagging behind. With the exception of the Halo and Gears Of War series I doubt Sony would swap any of their exclusives for Microsoft's exclusives. This generation of games consoles is coming to an end, with the Wii U already having arrived to usher in the next-generation, and successors to both the PS3 and Xbox 360 expected in 2013. It's difficult to remember a time when games consoles didn't connect to the Internet. I'm now so used to online features being an integral part of the gaming experience, that it's easy to forget that this wasn't the case just a decade ago. A decade is how long Xbox Live has been with us, with Microsoft launching the service in 2002. At that stage in time PC gamers had been playing online for many years, and the Xbox wasn't even the first console to feature Internet connectivity.

YouTube is finally bringing an official application to the PlayStation 3. The new application is available to download now, from the PlayStation Store. As you would expect, it is free, and offers much of the important functionality users expect from YouTube. The PlayStation 3 has a browser, so it has always been possible to watch videos on YouTube, but this app is poised to take that viewing experience to the next level.

Recently, the buzz around the MakeUseOf gaming office has been all about the PlayStation Vita. I have just finished a lengthy review on the device, and so far, I could not be happier. While the Vita does all kinds of cool stuff with the integration of a web browser and apps, its primary purpose in life is to be a gaming system, and to be a good gaming system, you need good games.
