We all listen to music. Some of us listen to our music on the go on our iPods or Windows Mobile devices. But when we are in front of a computer jamming out while working, what do you use?

I have used Windows Media Player (but I will show you some good iTunes visuals as well below) on my computers for years and years.

I have also found an invaluable resource for downloading Windows Media visuals that react to the music within Windows Media Player. They look a little something like this:

You can visit this site provided by Microsoft here. When you arrive you will see a list of Windows Media visuals to add to your collection. It looks like this:

Everything to download is free. The first one on the list that says featured visualization (WhiteCap) is a PC or Mac visualization application which is only a trial. The rest seem to be freebies.

I will run through how to use them. It is very simple – locate the download link next to the visualization you would like to have. This is what will play in the background of your Windows Media Player Console while a music file plays. This will also play if you do not have a video codec installed for a video file. Then it plays as a placeholder.

After downloading and installing the visualization you can activate it from within any version of Windows Media Player by clicking the arrow next to now playing like so:

Then choose visualizations and then continue on to choose a specific visualization as you can see in the image above. As you install more Windows Media visuals they will appear in this list. Some of the ones available for free download are:

1. Ice and Snow (Download Link)

2. Terminator III (Download Link)

3. Trilogy 1 (Download Link)

There are obviously other media players that people use on their desktops or laptops so here are some other links for visuals as well:

On iTunes the deal is pretty much the same – you can download this one called Circle that looks awesome. It can be downloaded from here.

and here is another one for iTunes called Snow from the same company as the one above (WOW Labs) that can be grabbed from here.

I can never get enough of these and I used to have an awesome screensaver on my Windows 98 machine that would allow it to rock out to any track or audio source playing through your system but it cost $20 and for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it! If you know of something similar for any platform let us know in the comments.

Since Media Player specific visuals leaves a lot of people out, we would love to know what you use to watch visuals with your tracks! We don’t care if you are tripping, smoking, drinking or banging your head against the table – we just want to know what you like to stare at while you do it!

While I keep my 5th generation iPod filled to capacity and use it solely as a music player in my car, I can’t stuff 20 gigs of audio files on my iPhone 3G. And having the same set of selected songs on my iPhone can get a little stale, especially when I don’t sync the device for several months.

So in order to rotate different music on my iPhone, I’ve started using the Autofill feature of iTunes, which is somewhat hidden in the iPhone and iPod Touch setup. It takes a few clicks to find the settings. But here’s how to get it done. (Note: this process is different for 1st or 2nd generation iPod shuffle users. Autofill for those devices are clearly evident.)

The purpose and benefit of Autofill is to have iTunes automatically add and/or replace songs on your portable Apple music playing device rather than you having to manually select playlists from your iTunes library. It also gives you the ability to determine how much memory you want devoted to songs on your device. This is crucial if your iTunes library is very large and all your songs can’t fit on your device. So you may decide that each time you sync your device with iTunes that you want to Autofill it with say 3-4 gigs of music.

First off, in order to use Autofill, you need to manually manage your music on your iPod (when I say iPod, I‘m also referring to the iPhone and iPod Touch.) So when you connect your iPod to iTunes ‘09 for syncing, you’ll want to select the device in iTunes and click the “Manually manage music and videos” box under Options.

Next, you want to select Music under Devices, which will show all your music in iTunes. From there, you have a few important decisions to make. First off, you need to decide if you want Autofill to choose music from your entire iTunes Music library or if you want it to select from a particular playlist of songs. Click on “Autofill From” at the bottom of the main iTunes window and make your selection.

Now click on the Settings button on the right side. This is where it gets somewhat tricky. Where it says, “Reserve space for disk use,” is a little confusing. You want to first decide how much memory space you want left (reserved) on your iPod after Autofill adds music to your device.

In other words, say you want about 311 megabytes of free space for new applications, videos, podcasts, etc, then you will want to set the “Reserve space disk use” slider to that amount. In my test, the numbers didn’t always match up, but they were fairly close. When I set the number to 311.3 MB, it filled my iPhone with 4.56 GB of songs, and left about 365.1 MB of free space for other stuff. That’s okay, because I don’t add as many apps and video files as I used to. I just want to make sure I have a good variety of songs from my all jazz playlist. If video files and podcasts are your primary media use for your device, then you might allot a gig or more of free space.

Lastly, you need to decide if Autofill will do the following:

• Replace all items when Autofilling (It will mainly replace all songs, not other stuff.)

• Choose items randomly.

• Choose higher rated items more often.

I chose all three. Simple. If you don’t select “Choose items randomly“, you will not be able to select “Choose higher rated items more often.”

After making selections, click OK and go back to the start page of your device and click Sync. Autofill will do its thing.

If the changes you make don’t come out as you wish, don’t worry; you can always revert back to the previous setup of selected playlists.

So how do you prefer to update your iPod? Manually with selected playlists or automatically Autofilled?

If you’re [...]

When it comes to combining the iPhone and Internet radio, it can be a daunting task, considering how many apps there are to choose from. We’ve put together a list for you, that might make the choice a bit easier, depending on what kind of listener you are.

iPhone and Internet Radio – Want Variety?

If you’re looking for a big variety of radio stations to choose from, then CBS Radio will meet your needs. Almost identical to the Yahoo! Music App, the CBS Radio app features the widest variety of genres and radio stations, from both AOL Radio, Yahoo! Music as well as local stations from almost 30 cities across the US.

The CBS Radio app allows you to add stations to favourites as you are listening to them, by clicking on the star icon. When a song is playing, the title, singer, and album artwork are displayed. You can skip up to 6 songs per hour while listening to any given radio station.

Other features include sharing the radio station you are listening to by sending your friends form emails with a link to the radio station, or buying the currently playing song on iTunes.

Your listening is interrupted every now and then by several audio adverts in a row.

Want To Discover New Music?

If you want to discover new music based on your taste, or listen to user-generated playlists, you should download FineTune.

The app requires registration on FineTune’s website, but that certainly has its advantages. You can create your own playlists on the FineTune website, clunky as it may be, and then easily access them from your iPhone.

You can also use FineTune to discover new music by listening to Artist Radio stations. Choose one specific singer or band, and FineTune will play similar music for you. You can add artists to your favourites on the FineTune website but that feature is lacking on the iPhone app. The variety of pre-set radio stations on FineTune is limited to the standard genres, but they are listed under some pretty cheesy names.

If you’re not sure what to listen to, FineTune has a list of Featured Artists, from mainstream to obscure, from the 50s to present day, along with a list of the popular artists on FineTune.

The Now Playing window displays the names of the song and singer, the album title and album artwork. While listening to any given radio station you can skip up to 5 songs per hour.

Want A Specific Station?

Do you have a specific radio station that you want to listen to? Then use FStream.

As long as you have the URL used to access the online radio station using an external desktop app like Winamp or iTunes, FStream can play that station for you on your iPhone. Adding radio stations can be done directly through the app, but is easier done using their web management tool.

No registration is required, as the app makes use of your iPhone’s IP address. Web management can be accessed by clicking on the ‘More’ tab, where FStream will give you the the link to go to for managing your favourite stations, and the choice to use password protection.

When adding a station to your favourites, there is a space to fill in the format and bitrate, but it is not necessary to fill that information in. The now playing tab displays the song title and singer.

A unique feature that sets FStream apart from the rest is the ability to record the audio in either WAV or AIFF format. You can play recordings on your iPhone or download them through your FStream web management page.

Want Podcasts?

Want to listen to podcasts on the fly? Use Stitcher Radio.

Stitcher allows you to tune into the latest podcasts from around the web, from news and business to science and technology, as well as live public radio stations from around the US. You can add podcast episodes to your favourites or bookmark podcast episodes while they are playing.

The latter seems to be a little bit redundant taking into consideration the favourites feature. Using the favourites feature is more beneficial, as you can receive email alerts once a new episode has been added.

Each category consists of a playlist of the latest episodes from various popular podcasts. Once a podcast episode has finished, Stitcher will automatically start playing the next episode on the list, which means, for example, you can listen to the latest news podcasts from NPR, CNN, Fox, and Slate, to name a few, all in one playlist.

You can also pause podcasts or skip to the next episode in the playlist, as well as rewind and fast forward within a podcast, but you have to use the seeker, so it’s not entirely accurate. If you close Stitcher while listening to a podcast, opening it up again will take you back to the exact spot where you left off in the episode.

You can also sync your mobile listening with your desktop experience, listening to podcasts both on the go, or at your computer on their website. Stitcher also features social integration, where you can share the name and link to the podcast episode you are listening to on Twitter, Facebook or by email, and users don’t need to be registered members to tune in.

A good way to familiarise yourself with the many features that Stitcher has to offer is to listen to their very own Tips podcast, which can be found under the Featured Podcasts.

Stitcher requires registration, and has unobtrusive ads at the bottom of the screen.

Want To Multi-Task?

Want to multitask on your phone while listening to the radio? Download iRadioSuite

iRadioSuite has many features you wouldn’t expect to find in a free app. The list of genres consists of 80s music, Alternative, Rock, Country, Christmas tunes, Soft Rock and office friendly music, and Top 40 songs.

While a song is playing, iRadioSuite allows you to pause the music, and rewind up to 10 minutes on any station. While a song is playing, you can add the station to your favourites, visit the station’s website in an integrated browser, and buy the song on iTunes, tag it, or send the track info by email. Emailing track information opens up the mail app, with the singer and song title filled into the body of the email.

The Now Playing window displays the song title, singer, and the station’s logo.

What makes iRadioSuite an exceptional app is its ability to play radio stations in the background. While listening to a station, click on the button marked ‘background play,’ and when prompted it will open a window in Safari. The music will fade out, and back in again, and once you’ve hit the home button, you can multitask on your iphone, while the music plays, to your hearts content.

If you want to stop the music, simply open up the app again.

For all of its features, iRadioSuite is surprisingly and blissfully ad-free.

Want To Create A Playlist?

Want to listen to a specific song on the go? Download Boombox.

Boombox’s interface is designed like, well a boombox, and is built on the framework of social music website, Blip.fm. Using the free version of Boombox allows you to search for and listen to songs on your iPhone, as well as, create playlists, unlike FineTune which only allows you to create playlists at your computer. You can create local playlists to listen to on your iPhone, but if you want direct integration with your Blip.fm account, you will have to purchase the paid app.

Searching for a song gives you the option to buy it on iTunes, add it to your playlist, or listen to it immediately. You can only create one playlist at a time. The playlist can be edited by clicking on the list icon in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Do you have a favourite iPhone radio app? If so, let us know about it in the comments.

So you totally forgot to get a birthday present for a good friend or send a Christmas card to a close relative? The time for a punctual delivery has passed and you’re in a mess. What can you do?

Well, let’s hope they have internet access because that could save your rear end. You can still prepare a lovely surprise and send it to them in time. After all, a virtual delivery is instant.

Best of all, the following last minute gift ideas are all free, at least for the moment. Gifts don’t have to be expensive, it’s the thought that counts.

1. Greeting Card

The most obvious last minute gift idea would be to send an electronic greeting card. There are many sites out there that offer free templates. Hallmark and Yahoo! Greetings now charge for eCards. Free eCards can be sent with sites such as 123Greetings & eGreetings.

Care2

The mission of Care2 is to support people living a healthy and green lifestyle. Their free eCards are of a very high quality with unique designs and animations. You can personalize your card, have it sent on a specific date, and receive a notification when it was picked up.

As a member of Care2, you will collect butterfly credits for each greeting card and you can redeem the credits for meaningful gifts, such as safe drinking water or carbon offsets. What a great way to salve your conscience.

YouTube Holiday Cards

If you’re not a shy person and up for fun, why not produce a little video and surprise someone? Saikat wrote an article on how to Send Video Greeting Cards with YouTube.

2. Virtual Flowers

Greeting cards are all the same. Flowers, however, express a different message, even if they are only virtual. Virtual Florist and eFlowerGrams provide a wonderful selection.

flowers2mail

By far the most original virtual flowers can be sent with flowers2mail. You can arrange an individual bouquet, select a vase, and fill in a little greeting card. Et voilà, your flowers are ready to be mailed, up to 15 days in advance.

3. Calendar

It’s not difficult to make a calendar. All you need is a free online tool, some unique motifs, and Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and print your calendar.

strong>My Calendar Maker

To create a free personalized calendar, you have to register with the site. You can choose between different calendar layouts (full-size, half-size, tear-off), pick the start month/year and end month/year, upload your images, add captions of up to 100 characters, add or remove special occasions, for example birthdays and anniversaries, add a cover and a title, and finally save and print your calendar. Quick and very easy.

The creators also offer My Free Calendar Maker, which creates non-personalized calendars. With the Yearly Calendar Maker, you can create a personalized yearly calendar. The advantage of both tools is that you don’t have to sign up.

4. Gift Certificate

Using a gift certificate you can give one of the most precious gifts of all: time.

Invite your friend for a home cooked dinner and spend an entire evening with them; offer your grandma to stock up her supplies, so that she doesn’t need to go shopping as often or carry heavy items; volunteer to mow the lawn of your parents’ house once a month; or help your friends with babysitting the kids and/or pets, so they can spend some time alone.

To make your job easier, you can use ready-made templates and fill them in with your details.

Ivy’s Gift Certificate Maker

The beauty of this gift certificate maker is that it provides you with a list of ideas of what you can possibly give. So simply tick an option in one of the gift giving categories (kids to parents, parents to kids, friends to friends etc.), add the recipient’s and your name, and preview the result.

This tool also suggests to make a coupon book, i.e. printing multiple certificates and stapling them together. This can make a lovely gift.

Regiftable Personalized Gift Certificate

Need it custom and chic, but very simple and most of all fast? On this site you can choose from five seasonal templates and create up to three certificates at once. They will look like the example below. Quick and easy.

You can either print each certificate or save and mail them.

5. Music Playlist

If you want to make a very personal and instant gift, think of the music that connects you and your friend or relative. Every life, friendship, and relationship has its own soundtrack. Or maybe you know someone who loves to discover new music.

You can sit down and record a CD or tape. There are some simpler options though. You can create an online playlist on several different sites.

Actionext

This site provides a simple way to produce playlists without having to sign in. Simply search for songs, from the results list click the plus next to a song to add it and continue to search. Once down click Save and share the URL.

I reviewed this tool in my article Create Online Music Playlists with Actionext.

MixTape.me

To create and share a permanent playlist with MixTape.me you have to get an account and sign in. But once you have passed that point you’re set to create something awesome. You could make several playlists with different purposes. For example one to cheer up a friend, another to let your family drown in happy memories, and a third to show everyone which music you love best.

David has written a thorough review on how to Build The Perfect Music Playlist With MixTapeMe.

Have you completed your gift shopping yet? What are some last minute gifts you still need to pick up? Did you come up with a great last minute gift idea that would fit in this list? Please share!

I recently wrote an article about how to make Lala.com your music player of choice. Since the article received lots of views, I thought I would share additional tips about the useful features of the site after you sign-up for its free membership.

Note – this music sharing site is US-only, but perhaps as membership builds, the site’s reach will expand.

The LaLa Music Player Menu & Recommendations

First off, learn and take advantage of the blue player menu bar at the top of the Lala member page. This feature allows you to play music while also browsing through the site. So you can play, change, and stop songs no matter what page you’re visiting on the site.

You’ll also notice, as you’re browsing, that you can add songs to a queue. All you have to do is click the hotlink word “Queue“ under the play button, and the song will be added to the queue list. And remember, you can listen to an entire song once for free on Lala, and then after the first listen, you can play it again for 30 seconds. I sample about three or four albums per week for free this way.

This is somewhat obvious, but be sure to notice that you can star/rate currently selected music. This is a great way to build playlists of favorite songs.

Finally, in terms of the player menu, notice also that you can share/recommend and post titles of songs to your Twitter and Facebook accounts and to other Lala members.

Song recommendations are one of Lala’s most useful attractions. Since I rarely listen to music radio stations anymore, recommendations from other Lala members are the way I learn about music I haven’t heard. So after you sign up and start hanging around Lala, you will want build a good contact list. Search for members who share your musical tastes, and you’ll be rewarded with some great recommendations. Also, of course, be sure to share your own recommendations.

View Recently Explored

Right under the player menu there’s another set of menu features. Clicking the little clock icon will reveal a pop-up window of the songs and albums that you have recently listened to and explored. This feature is really useful because when you’re browsing the site, you can revisit your browsing history. However, it would be useful if Lala made a way for members to create a wish list of songs on their account.

Collections

You don’t have to purchase a single song to be a member of Lala.com. You can actually upload existing songs on your computer to your Lala account for free. All your songs get added to your Collections. When you do purchase websongs and MP3s on the site, they too get added to your collections. You can easily click the My Collection button to get a linear view of your library, but I personally recommend using the album view of your collection. You do this by linking to your profile page and clicking on Collections. This album view will reveal only songs you’ve uploaded or purchased, not that the ones you have recently sampled.

Build Playlists

As you browse and listen to songs, you have several options for building playlists. This feature makes the online Lala music player almost like iTunes. Clicking on the Playlist button, you get a drop down menu where you can click, “Add to new playlist.”

When you use Lala‘s Music Mover to copy songs on your computer to your Lala account, it will automatically create a playlist of those copied songs. You can also click on the My Collection>Add Songs button in the menu bar, and create new playlists, as well as add and remove songs to and from lists, as you do in iTunes. Though you can’t create smart albums like in iTunes, your Collections does include a few smart playlists of your recent adds and uploads.

Videos & Blurbs

Like other advanced websites, Lala.com includes a multimedia feature. Songs you listen to may include a related video, typically coming from YouTube.

Blurb Feature

Lala also features a Blurbs section, similar to Facebook. This is where you and your contacts can post messages to one another, and you also get to see the listening activity of your contacts. You can of course select to make your activity private by linking to the Privacy Settings of your account. The one option missing from this feature is that you can’t star favorite blurbs and link comments to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Nevertheless, the Blurbs feature makes Lala.com more than a simple music listening site. It’s great way to share and talk about music.

Lala.com doesn’t fit the needs of many music listeners, but if your computer is your main music player, Lala.com is a great option.

Let me know, if you’re a Lala.com listener, how you like the site.

As I’ve mentioned before here on MakeUseOf, I have incredible music tastes. Well, I suppose everyone thinks their music tastes are awesome, but that’s beside the point. I love discovering new music, love sharing my music with others, and love listening to music in general.

With Mixtapeme, an awesome new site, I can do all of those things. Mixtapeme lets you make, share, and listen to playlists from a vast library of music on the Web. And that’s really just the beginning of the features.

The key draw to Mixtapeme is sharing. As the site says, “The internet makes it easy to share anything with anyone across the globe in a heartbeat; it’s about time music joined the party.” To that end, Mixtapeme has made sharing individual songs or playlists easy and fun – but we’ll get to that.

The easiest way to get started with MixtapeMe is by creating a quick playlist. Search at the top of the page for artists, albums or songs, and when you find the one you want (based on an internal library, plus songs from Seeqpod, a huge music engine), drag and drop the song into the box on the bottom left of the page that says “Quick Playlist.” Rinse, and repeat. When you’re done adding songs, click on the Quick Playlist box, and up comes your playlist. Play one song or all of them, and enjoy!

If you don’t want to create your own playlist, feel free to listen to others’. There’s a list of Popular Playlists on the front page of Mixtapeme, as well as a list of Recent Playlists. Pick something that sounds interesting, and you might discover some awesome new music.

Once you’ve created a playlist (or found one you like), you can comment on it, share a URL to the playlist, or send it by email. You can also embed the playlist into a website, which I’ve done here with a playlist of my current favorite songs:

Beyond just making playlists, Mixtapeme offers a ton of great features. For every song or artist you find, there’s a lot of cool information to be found. In the song’s right-most column, you’ll see a bunch of icons. These let you buy the song, find more information, delete from your playlist, and more.

The “i” is my favorite, though – it brings up a submenu that lets you see artist information, song lyrics, relevant YouTube videos, and playlists that contain that particular song (really good for finding new music you’ll actually like). Mixtapeme is way more than just a music player, and does a great job of giving you all the music information you could want.

That’s about all you can do (which is, frankly, a ton) without creating a free account. Once you do create an account, more and more features are open to you. You can listen to the Seeqpod results, making your search results larger; you can create a library of saved tracks, saved playlists, and saved listening data.

You can make friends with other Mixtapeme users (I’m davidpierce, if you want to find me), and share playlists with each other, as well as track what other people are listening to.

Mixtapeme is still new (only a couple of weeks old), but is already making some noise in the music world. It’s making songs and playlists easy to create, listen to and share. Features are growing rapidly, and it’s already becoming one of my homes for online music listening.

Where do you listen to music online? What do you think of Mixtapeme?

After the revolutionary Kazaa, LimeWire, and Napster movement of free peer-to-peer music downloads gave way, other less effective imitating software was developed. However, this isn’t one of them. With this desktop app (compatible with Windows XP/2003/Vista) you’ll be able to listen to millions of songs for free with the aid of a few keys and clicks.

How Is This Possible?

With Muziic, a free online music player that allows you to access millions of songs free of charge, you won’t get into trouble for it because unlike Napster was at one point, it’s completely legal. This app enables you to search through a wide variety of songs in a music catalog that showcases all types of genres all the way from classical hits to hip-hop or R&B.

You’re also able to view small clips that are associated with the song of your choice, courtesy of YouTube.

It might seem a lot to take in at first once you open the user-interface, however you’ll come to find out that it’s pretty easy to search and listen to tracks once you get the hang of it.

Here’s How

The first thing you have to do is open up Muziic, then once you see the following window pop-up you’ll know that everything is in place.

As soon as the complete Muziic player window opens then you can scroll through the list of genres all the way to the left side of your window. You can open up a genre and view songs that have been previously uploaded by other users by simply clicking on its name.

Once you’ve browsed through the list and found songs you want to listen to, just click on the plus sign next to the song and it will be instantly added to your playlist.

Now in order to play the songs in your play list all you have to do is double click on the song and it will begin to load and play on the music player at the top left hand corner.

The End of Our Small Journey

Muziic player also allows you to configure the quality of your songs depending on your Internet connection speed by clicking on the Settings tab and choosing between Standard and HQ Stereo (HQ Stereo requires faster speeds).

There were a few things I wasn’t too fond of. It doesn’t have the option to listen to radio stations like you can with Last.fm or Spotify. I also found no easy way to manage the playlist or quickly browse through it as well.

However, once you take all of these things into consideration and the fact that it’s a free music player you’ll see past a few of the drawbacks (since you can’t have everything) and you can begin to enjoy free music with Muziic.

Please feel free to MakeUseOf our comment box below and leave us a thought!

In my younger days, one of my favorite ways to pass the time was creating mixtapes. I’d spend hours flipping back and forth between tape-decks A and B, painstakingly coming up with the perfect soundtracks for gaming or just hanging out. I recall coming up with some wacky (or just plain wack) combinations.

When I happened upon each of these three sites, those old feelings came back, although the compilation of the mixes do not take nearly as long this time around.

MixTurtle

Mix Turtle is among the first of these sites that I came across, and I feel that it’s still one of the better ones. Once you’ve signed up you can fill playlists with tracks found by Mix Turtle’s search engine, which appears to hook into YouTube and Google Video as well as index audio files from around the Web.

Results tend to contain duplicates, and some turn out to be broken links, but it’s quick and easy to find a good copy of a song.

Clicking the “live” light lists recently-played tunes which are one click away from your own playlists, which are in turn listed at your username.mixturtle.com page.

You may take a listen to my Mix Turtle playlist here.

8tracks

The makers of 8tracks seem to subscribe to the Apple school of Web design. The Flash-based interface is clear and simple. You’re just about guaranteed to find a good file for the song of your choice, but if not, 8tracks accepts uploads.

Playlists require a minimum of 8 tracks, or about a half-hour. It’s easy to browse and play other users’ mixes, and follow your favorite mixes and DJs.

Spin my 8tracks playlist here.

Maestro

I have been looking for a service like this for some time now. Some of the sites I’ve used have come close, but Maestro.fm surpasses them all.

First, a downloaded client uploads your iTunes library. As long as that client is running, you may access your library from any browser. In an effort to save bandwidth, your songs are NOT uploaded to Maestro’s server until the first time you play a song. Mac and Linux users, I’m afraid you’ll have to take the manual upload option for now. Playlist creation and library browsing with the highly-responsive interface is swift; you may add tracks individually, or save search results as a new playlist.

Finally, my extended “Ridiculous Beats” mix on Maestro, which has already been played by site users 75 times, is right here. You’ll end up either banging your head, bopping it, or scratching it.

How do you roll your playlists? Tell us what we’ve missed in the comments. Be honest, but gentile, and above all, enjoy the music!
