Being able to sync from our many devices to the Cloud is an awesome benefit of modern computing. We’re able to take our files with us on mobile devices, access them from other computers without the need of a device like a flash drive or SD card, and it’s an excellent solution for backing up that data that we can’t live without. Speaking of backing up that data, one of the best, but seldom used, ways to use cloud storage services is to create a redundancy backup system.

Online space for backup, storage, and collaboration is no longer available at a premium. Blame it on competitive offerings. Mediafire offers 50GB of free storage and their new Android app could be the portal for filling up all those free gigabytes.

Last year I wrote an article about online resources for preparing for your digital afterlife. If you're like me, I have a growing collection of registered websites, like my Flickr, Google, PayPal and other financial accounts, that my family will need to access after I pass away, or in the case of extreme illness. Setting up a way for them to access my important data, especially in the case of an emergency, needs to be as simple and straightforward as possible.

File backup is not a new conversation or topic by any means. If you search Google for “file backup” you will likely be overwhelmed by services and articles on the topic. It is a vast market and there is a lot to choose from. Within this market, however, only a few stand out. We know most of them: Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive and others like Mozy, SpiderOak, and on and on. Among all of those there is still one that rises above the rest and that is SugarSync.

Dropbox has long been considered the main player in cloud data synchronization, but services like Google Drive and Microsoft's SkyDrive are busy making a comeback. With a big and familiar user base, and more competitive pricing, it'll be hard on Dropbox to maintain its current position in the market. Personally, I've always been a Google fanboy, so when Google Docs changed into Google Drive, I was naturally very excited.
